Description

' Tools for Grappling Broken Drills, &c.i.n Oil-Wells.
No.155 ,200. Pate h ted Sepi.'22,1874.
(fittest-1v I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEROME S. MUNGER, OF BLAIRS CORNERS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO ROBERT HERSE, OF BEAVER, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOOLS FOR GRAPPLING BROKEN DRILLS, &c., IN OIL-WELLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,200, dated September 22, 1874; application filed July 28, 1874.
To all whom it may concern! Be it known that I, JEROME S. MUNGER, of Blairs Corners, in the county of Clarion and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fishing- Tools for Getting Broken Drills, Links, or other Pieces of Working Tools which Become Detached from Oil and Artesian Wells; and the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents an exterior view of my improved fishing-tool or grapple. Fig.2 is a sectional view of the same, showing the interior working parts.
My invention consists in the combination of spring-nippers, working inside of the toolstock, with a spring-hook pitman and an irregulargrooved plate, whereby the nippers may be liberated from the article seized when it cannot be raised by the tool in one position, and further trials made; and, if not finally successful in bringing up the broken tools, the fishing-too] can be jarred loose and taken out and saved, which is not the case with any fishing-tool that has yet come to my knowledge; for it is a fact, which has been demonstrated at a cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars to those who have bored artesian and oil wells, that the ordinary tools used for grappling and fishing out drills, 800., often get hung with the thing grappled, and the well abandoned, and tools lost beyond recovery.
My improved fishing-tool is made of best wrought-iron or steel, the outside of the stock A being of such size as nearly to fill the internal diameter of the tube used for easing v the well, yet to move perfectly free up and out of the bell a in the bottom of the stock A; then, by lifting the tool or stock, the nipper fastens itself upon the article, and, if it is sufficiently liberated, takes it out of the well; but, if the article cannot be jarred loose, so as to be extracted, the nippers B can be entirely released from it by the action of the hook spring-bar D working in the irregular-grooved plate E, and the entipe fishing-tool taken out and saved for further use.
My improved fishing-tool (as it is technically termed) is provided with a collar, G, and screw F, by which it is attached to a jar-link, ordinarily used in boring artesian or oil wells, every part made strong and substantial, the grooved plate E, hooked bar D, and springnippers B all being made and fitted to the opening H in the stock A, so that they can be taken out and repaired, or other parts put in, so that a great saving is effected in the cost and wear of the tools, and a much greater saving in not getting the fishing-tools hung in the well, so as not to be obliged to abandon it or them.
For the want of a tool that could be jarred loose and liberated from its grasp of such articles as get permanently fast often in boring deep oil or artesian wells, many thousands of dollars have been expended annually to no purpose since the discovery of petroleum, as the grapples and fishing-tools ordinarily used often become fast with the drill-point, link, or whatever fished for, in which case the tools, well, and all have to be abandoned after they have nearly or quite finished the boring.
What I claim as my invention is The combination of the spring-nippers B, working inside of the tool-stock A, with the spring hook-bar D and the irregular-grooved plate E, for liberating the said nippers, substantially in the manner as and for the purposes herein specified.
In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name.

JOHN LORAI-I, GEO. MUNGER.
