- itlmownthat I, LOUIS J. Kos'rnn, a citizen of the Ufiited-State s, residing at State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in, an En gine' Starter, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates -to engine starters and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
-A n object of the invention is to provide a starter especially adapted to be used in conjunction with an internal combustion engine and-which includes a starter shaft-haw ing' an abutment member fixed at the end thereof and with a sleeve mounted for turning movement upon the shaft, ascoil spring is connected at one end with the abutment member and at its other end with the sleeve,

The said collar. is further provided with a weight which disposes the center of gravity of the collar at one side of the axis of the shaft and whereby said collar will assume a normal position when the gear wheel thereof is disengaged from the fly wheel.
The collar is provided at its opposite ends with cam edges adapted to engage the cam edges alternately of the sleeve, and friction means are provided for temporarily holding the collar in a fixed position with relation to the sleeve. I

Asiilustrated -inthe accompanying drawings, the engine starter comprises a shaft 1 which carries at one end'the fixed abutment member 2. The engine fly wheel isindicated at 7, and the said'fly wheel is provided with gear teeth 8. collar 9 is slidably mounted upon the sleeve 3 and is provided at its opposite ends with cam edges 10 and 11 respectively. A gear wheel 12 is mounted upon the intermediate portion of the collar 9 and the forward ends of the teeth of the gear wheel 12 arechamfered or beveled as at 13. A weight 14 is carried bythe collar 9 andis disposed adjacent the gear wheel 12'and ofgravity of the weight 14 is disposed at one side of the axis of the shaft 1 whereby the center" the 'weightlss will be disposed unden'the gear whel'12 is disengaged from the teeth of the wheel 7 as shown in Figure 1 'of the drawing. A spring finger 15 is mounted upon the sleeve 3 and is provided with a hump 16 adapted to engage in a dent provided upon the ,exterior surface of the sleeve 9 and whereby the parts are norure 1 of the drawings.
