WILLIAH I. LUNT lAND ROBERT G. ROBINSON, OF STOCKTO'N, CALIFORNIA.
' Gamen PUMP.
Application led November 27, 1922. Serial No.,608,495.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that we, WILLIAM M. LUNT and ROBERT G. ROBINSON, residing at Stockton, county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented certain new and 'useful Improvements in Grease Pumps; and we' do declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereonvwhich form a part of this applicatm.
`is invention-relates to improvements in grease-pumps or grease guns as they are commonly known, and is especially designed as an attachment for use in connection with the pumps used with the Alemite and similar systems for forcing grease to various bearings of motor vehicles.-
The principal object of our invention is to provide an attachment for the above specified purpose which will enable a very vgreat pressure being (put on the grease with a much smaller expen iture of physical effort than is now necessary to successfully force the grease to the partsl to be lubricated This latter feature alone will appeal to the users of such grease-pumps, especiall those in service stations and the like, w o are called upon to make frequent use of these pumps, the operation of which as at present constructed, is very tiring, especially if kept up for any length of time.
A further object is to construct the device in such a Way that it is a, complete and compact unit of itself, and as such may be att tached to or mounted on the ordinary grease pump without, making any alterations of any kind on the latter.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will beexceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects we accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal Tof the following specification and claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views: A
Fig. 1 is a slde elevation of the attachment, showing 'the same as mounted on an ordinary grease-pump.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged section of the attachment.
Referring now more particularly to-the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes the barrel of an ordinary grease pump, whichhas at one end a nipple 2 provided for the purpose of connection to a'hose, and at the other end means of which the threaded-stem 4, connected to the usual plunger inside the barrel, maybe turned. This operation causes the plunger to be moved lengthwise of the barrel, forcing the grease out through the nipple 2.
Ourattachment comprises an open-ended cylinder 5having on one side, intermediate itsends, a tappe orifice 6, into which the nipple 2 is removably screwed.
In order to make a more substantial connection with the barrel 1, and to protect and remove some of the strain from the relatively weak nipple, the cylinder 5 is formed with a cu or hood 7 concentric with the orifice 6; this hood surrounds the exposed portion of the nipple and impinges against the end of the screwed tightly into the hole 6. This hood is of a length so as to engage the head of the barrel 1 when the nipple is tachment as it is screwed onto the nipple 2 so that it will be impossible to get the end of the nipple projected into the cylinder 5 where it would interfere with the movement of the plunger 8 which, if such occurred, would render the device inoperable.
Slidable with a snug fit in the cylinderA 5 is a plunger or piston 8, one end of which projects from'the cylinder and is pivotally connected to a lever 9 which in turn is pivoted at itsadjacent end on one end of a link 10, itself pivoted between lugs 11 formed integral with the cylinder on the side thereof opposite to the member 7.
A lever of the second class, which is the most owerful, is therefore provided, the total ength of said lever being .so much greater than the distance between the fulcrum and load points that a very great pressure or leverage may be'exerted on the plunger with the expenditure of but little physical eifort on the part of the Voperator manipulating the lever.
The lever extends in a plane radially of In operation, the lever is rst manipulated to move the piston clear of theoriice 6 y which contains the end of the nipple 2. The
handle 3 is then rotated to force some of the grease in the pump into the cylinder 5 and to also lill up the hose 14 at the beginning of operations. This will not require much effort, since the only resistance to the movement of the barrel plunger is the inertia of the grease itself. When this is accomplished, the lever is moved in the opposite direction, causing the piston to move past and close the orifice 6, and force the grease previously injected into the cylinder and hose along and out of the latter for a distance equal to the stroke of the piston.
The piston is then retracted, the handle 3 again turned to inject more grease into the cylinder, and the piston again forced down on the new filling of grease.-
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that we have roduc'ed such a device as substantially ulfi s the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviawhat We claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A secondary grease pump for attachment to a primary grease lpump having a reduced outlet nipple, the secondary pump comprising a cylinder with means moving through the cylinder to eject grease therefrom, the cylinder having an orifice in its side for threaded engagement with the nipple, a hood on the cylinder surrounding the orifice and of a length to engage the head of the primary grease pump and limit the threaded advance of the cylinder on the nipple and prevent ythe nipple from projecting into the interior of the cylinder.
2. A secondary grease pump for attachment to a primary grease gun having a reduced outlet nipple, the secondary pump comprising a cylinderk with lever operated means moving through the cylinder to eject grease therefrom, the cylinder having a screwhthreaidtd ofifice in its side for receiving t e nipp e o the prima grease a hood rigid with the cylind'gr and spgacueld around the orilice and adapted to engage the end of the primary grease and relieve the nipple of lateral strain when the lever is operated to eject grease from the cylinder.
In testimony `whereof we aix our signatures.
WILLIAM M. LUNT. ROBERT G. ROBINSON.
