Be it known that l, DONALD R. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anchorage, Territory of Alaska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a. Perpetual Calendar, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in perpetual calendars and means for supporting the same on useful objects, such as pens, pencils, nen caps, and other objectsof like nature.
A further object of this invention is the provision of improve cans for maintaining perpetual calendars and the' like in readily noticeable, but compact position on useful articles, such as pens, pencils, and the like.
A further object of this invention isthe provision of improvements in means for maintaining articles, such as calendars and the like, in simple and compact-relation on pens and pencils, or the like, without encumbering the pen or pencil part with objectionable structure.
A further object of this invention is the provision in improved calendar construction, such as set forth in my Patent #1,500,913, granted July 8, 1924. l

other useful object, with which the improved perpetual calendar structure may be used, and which may embody the conventional body B and the cap C in which the improved structural features of the perpetual calendar are embodied.
The cap or member C p-referably includes a substantiall A cylindrical shaped hollowv supporting bo y 10, providing a passageway 11 therethrough which is open at the lower edge 12 of the 'body 10. The body upwardly thereof is reduced in thickness, providing the". annular recess 13 inletting from the upper edge 14 of the body 10, which ixedlyl receives a reduced portion 15, which to al1 intents and purposes may be considered as a part of the body 10. This reduced portion 15 is preferably hollow and cylindrical in formation, and may be for-med of metal such as aluminum; the lower end of the same resting in the groove 13 so that the -inside surface defined by the passageway 16 through the reduced portion 15 lies flush witl the passageway 11 through the body 10. The reduced portion 15 while the inside surface thereof liesI flush with the inside surfaces of the passageway 11 is less in thickness than that of the body 10, so that the outer surface or circumference of the reduced portion 15 is disposed inwardly for a short distance .from the outer circumference of the body 10 extended. Upwardly of the edge 14 of the body 10, the reduced portion 15 is provided with 'a circumferential groove of considerable width, adapted to receive anv annular strip 20, of any approved material, such` as paper, pyroxyline, or the like, so .that the outer circumference of this strip 20 lies flush with the outer surface or circumference of the reduced portion 15. On this strip 20 is preferably delineated a plurality of sets of numerals arranged inthe form4 of calendar months; these sets having 28, 29, 30 or 31 days there- 100 in, and Apreferably arranged somewhat in the form shown in detail in my Patent #1,500,913,r although the numerals may be arranged different from that illustrated in this patent. In the upper part of the reduced sleeve or portion 15, an annular flange 25 is provided, which annularly extend inwardly of the Vpassageway 16, to restrict the same at the top of the reduced portion lf This 11 'Y with a plurality of adapted to intermesh with t portion of the ring 38, so t upper portion 25 of the reduced portion 15 at the vupper edge thereof is provided with@ an annular series of V-shaped teeth 28, of`
any approvedv number, which. extend up-y wardly from the reduced sleeve 15 and not laterally outwardly thereof. The portion 15 within the upper opening defined by the annular portion 25 provides a screw thread` ed opening 29. v
A hollow substantially cylindrical shaped sleeve 30 is provided as a part of the cap structure C, which is' formed of the same material as the body 10, and which is adapted to be slipped over the reduced portion 1'5; the same having an opening 31 therethrough, preferably polygonal, to expose only one setV of calendar numerals of the strip 20. In position on the reduced portion 15 the lower edge 33 of the sleeve 30. rests on the upper edge 14 of the body 10, and the outer circumference of the sleeve 30 lies substantially flush with the outer circumference of the body 10. On the ex terior circumference of thel sleeve 30, immediately above the opening 31, the letters S, M, T, W, T, F, S designate the days of the week, and which are arranged in cooperative relation with the columns of iigures in the set of numerals which are exposedv through the opening 31, in accordance with my invention whirh is set forth in Patent #1,500,913. In the u per portion thereof the sleeve 30 is prefera ly provided with an annular ring 38, -preferably of aluminum or some analogous metal, which is aiiixed, as by riveting 39 to the sleevey 30, so that the upper portion thereof slightly projects upwardly of the top edge 41 of the sleeve 30. The lower marfrinal portion o f this annular ring 38 is re erably provided -shaped teeth 44 e teeth 28 of the sleeve portion 25. The passageway 46 through the ring 38 is greater than the diameter of the screw threaded opening 29, and aligns therewith.
A clamping cap 50 is preferably provided as a part of the cap C, which is in the'form of a screw, and preferably of some material such as hard rubber, porcelain, or in fact of any,y material desired. This clamping screw or cap 50 preferably includes a head portion 52 with a depending externally screw threaded shank 53 adapted for screw threaded engagement in the screw threaded openinlg 29 of the hollow reduced portion 15. T e clamping screw 50 at the outer circumference of the head rtion- 52- provides a reduced depending iioange 54 forming with the shank 53 an annular groove 56 adapted to receive the uplwardly extending at the lower edge 57 of the flange 54 may engage the top edge 41 of the sleeve 30 when the clampin ca or screw 50 in position. It is pre erre to lockthe same in a .that the head 52 of the screw 50 be externally knurled, to facilitate the removal thereof.
Referring to the operation of theJ invention, it is merely necessary to loosen the screw 50 so that the sleeve 30 may be slid upwardly on the reduced portion 15 of the body structure, and until the teeth 28 and 44 are out of meshing engagement. In this,
position the sleeve 30 may be laterally rotated to expose any set of numerals of a desired number of days according to the current month, and the set of numerals may be so lplaced that the first day of the month falls .on any particular day of the week designated by the letters on the sleeve 30. When the desired calendar'month having a predetermined numberof days with the first day of the month falling on the particular day of the week has been selected, the sleeve 30 is lowered so that the teeth 44 thereof engage the teeth 28. This will lock the teeth-against rotation on the body', and by rotating the screw 50 until the flange 54 thereof clamps on the top of the sleeve 30, the latterl will be absolutely locked upon the body 10, to prevent rotation thereof, so that the current calendar month will be accurately exposed in the cap C.
From the foregoing discussion of this invention it is apparent that a novel perpetual calendar structure has been provided, which may -be readily applicable to various structures, such as pens, pencils, and in fact anyl structure embodying the principles illustratedy in the drawing.`
Various changes in `the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be made to the form ofthe invention herein shown and describedz without departing from the spirit of the lnvention or the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. In a deviceof the class described the combination of a body portion having an upwardly extending reduced portion thereon with indicia thereabout, hollow sleeve means provided with an opening therethrough adapted to be slipped overthe reduced portion of the supporting body so that certain indicia on the reduced portion is visible through saidI opening, interengaging teetlr means carried by the sleeve and reduced portion, and clamping means adjustably carried by the reduced portion at its upper. end adapted to engage the sleeve at its upper end predetermined relation on said body. 2. 'In a structure of the class describedl the combination of a substantially cylindrical shaped body, a sleeve carried by said bod and movable therealong, interengagi teet means carried :by said sleeve and sai body, said body having a screw threaded opening therein, and a clamping screw in ludng a screw threaded shank adapted forpredetermined number of days; said sleeve vthe exposed circumference thereof, `an annular strip of material in said annular groove of the reduced portion having indicia thereon designating sets of calendar months of different numbers of days in each set, an inwardly extending flange upwardly in said reduced portion providing an inner screw threaded opening and upwardly extending substantially V-shaped teeth arranged in an annular series on top'of said reduced portion, a. sleeve of hollow formation providing a transverse opening" therein, said sleeve adapted to be slipped over the reduced portion whereby the outer circumference of the sleeve lies flush with the outer circumference of said. body with .an edge of said sleeve in engagement with an edge of said body, a ring shaped member upwardly carried in said sleeve providing a downwardly facing annular series of V-s-haped teeth adapted to engage withthe V-shaped teeth of said reduced .portion whereby the opening in said sleeve will expose a. set of numerals of a adjacent said opening having letters designating the days of the week in cooperative relation with the numerals exposed through t said opening, a cap screw including a reduced screw threaded shank adapted for engagei'nentl in the screw threaded openingl of said reduced portion and having a laterally extending flange adapted to clamp in engage-v ment with said sleeve to hold the teeth of the latter in engagement with 'the teeth of the re-` duced portion.
4. In a structure of the @lass described the combination of a body having indicia. arranged thereon designating .a plurality of numerals arranged in the form of a calendar month, a hollow sleeve carried upon the body and movable thereabout and being provided with an opening through which the numerals may be exposed, said sleeve having indicia arranged along an edge of said ope ing representative of the days of the week, sai

5. In a device of the class described the combination of a. body having a screw threaded opening at an end thereof, a. sleeve adapted to be slipped over the body and having an open end through which the screw threaded openingI is exposed, and an adjustable cap screw including a threaded shank for engaging into said screw threaded opening of thevbody and being provided with a head portion' for clamping against said sleeve in order to hold the sleeve in a fixed relation with respect to the body, said body having indicia thereon and said sleevel being provided with an opening therethrough `for displaying said indicia according to the position which said screwholds the sleeve upon said body.
6. In a device'of the class described the combination of a body having teeth ar-4 ranged about an upper edge thereof and be ing provided with a screw threaded opening inwardly of said teeth atits upper end, a
hollow sleeveon the body provided with teeth adj acent .the upper edge thereof adapted to intermesh with teeth of the body when the sleeve is positioned upon the body, said sleeve having an open end to expose said ,screw threaded opening, anda detachable screw member for the screw threaded opening including a portion adapted to extend into abutment with the sleeve at its open end for clamping the sleeve on the body so that the teeth of the sleeve and body interengage to hold the body and sleeve in a predetermined fixed relation.
7. In a device of the class described the combination of a. body having indicia exteriorly thereon, teeth rigidly carried by saidadapted to receive said body,"teeth rigidlyL carried by said hollow sleeve within thev passageway facing downwardly therein where-C by to interengage with the teeth of the body when the sleeve and body are in,fassembled position, said sleeve having an opening therein for exposing certain of the indicia of the body according to the position of the sleeve on the body, and means for clamping the body and sleeve so that the teeth interengage in a definite relation.
8. In a device of thelclass described the combination of a body having indicia thereon and being providedwith upwardly extending teeth at the top margin thereof and having a screw threaded opening inwardly of the area between said teeth, a hollow sleeve having an o ening therein, said hollow sleeve being adiipted to be slipped over the body to expose certain of the indicia of the body throu h its opening, said sleeve upwardly thereol being open and having an inwardly extending annular portion about said opening with downwardly facing teeth `adapted to inter-mesh with the teeth of said body when the sleeve is in position uposaid body, and a cap screw including a screw threaded shank adapted to be inserted through t-he open upper end of the sleeve into the screw threaded opening of said body, said cap screw including a laterally extending annular flange for clamping against the to edge of the sleeve, said screw 'upon a justment being adapted `to tightly clamp the sleeve against the body and upon opening adjustment permitting limited longitudinal movement of the sleeve on the body todisengage the teeth of4 the sleeve.
