l Application filed March f1.5, 1 920.v Serial No. 365,806.
To all 'whom t 'may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES D. FARMER, a citizen of the UnitedL States of America, and a resident of the city of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and usefulv Improvements in a Shoe Heel, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of this invention is to provide an improvement in shoe heels that are constructed of metal or other analogous material. l
Another object of this invention is to provide a shoe heel with improved means for securing it to the sole of the shoe. Y
A further object is in providing improved means for securing the wearing surface of lift to a metallic shoe heel.
Other and further objects will appear in the specification and be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, yreference being had to the accompanying drawings exem- V plifying the invention, and in which,
Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section taken through a shoe heel showing the iniprovements contained in this invention applied thereto.
Figure 2k is a plan view of the shoe heel.
Figure 3 is an .enlarged transverse vertical section of a portion of Fig. 2, and taken 0 on the im@ iii-iii thereof.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a body portion of which the shoe heel is comprised, said body portion being of a shell like formation, and having a hollowed out portion 2, andformed on said portionr 1 is a lower end portion 8, having a recess 1 which is open from the lower end, and formed around said recess at its lower .end is an overlapping flange 5, said recess 11 being for the reception of a filling element 6, such as leather orother fibrous material, said filling element providing a securing agent for fastenings such as7 when they are driven through the wearing .surface or lift 8.
A dividing wall 9 is provided in the body portion 1 betweenthe h'ollowed out portion y 2 and the recess 4 thereof, and formed in said wall is an opening 10 which is for the reception of al bolt 11,`having a head 12, and a threaded end 13, Vsaid head being seated in the lift 8, the depression formed by o said head 12 in the lift 8 being filled by a compound such as 14.-
Formed in the hollowed out portion l2 of the body portionl is a plurality of bosses 15, each being for the purpose of securing a heelfastening 16. These fastenings 16 are peculiarly secured in their respective bosses so that they can be removed in the event Qthatthey, become broken; each fastening being in the form of a' nail having a head 17, each nail being inverted so that the head thereof will rest in a bushing 18 which is embedded lin the material from which the Y heel is casted, each of .said bushings being threaded interiorly as designated at 19 and are for the reception of respective threaded washers 20 iii-which each washer is mounted overa respective inverted nail and clamped against the head thereof, thereby holding said nails or fastenings in perpendicular position. Y In mounting an improved shoe heel'o this character to a shoe, the bolt 11 after being passed through tliei'lift 8 and filling element ol` is passed through an opening provided in therjshoe sole 21, where a nut 22 is engaged over the threaded end 13 thereof, Y
said nut clamping-on top of the sole 21. The sole is then pressed down until the fastenings 16 have been penetrated through the sole and the ends 23 thereof are clinched or bent as shown in Fig. 1.
For. preventing the lift 8 from turning on l the bolt v11, pins such as 24, which are carriedrby the lower end portion 3 are provided. l
From the aforesaid description. as pertaining toy Figs. 1, 2 and 3, it is to be noted that a heel of this improved' character can be readily secured to a shoe, and when ocr casion arises, canbe readily removed therefrom by removing the bolt 11 and straightening the fastenings 16, and as already related, in the event that one of these fastenings breaks, the washer 20 can be readily rea penetrating member to ybe sustained by each respective .seating means, and a iemovable means in each of said seating means v for holding each respective penetrating member in operative position.
2. In a shoe heel, a seating means borne i thereby having a portion for underengaging a portion of the rbody of the heel, a 'penellO trating member located in said seating means, and a removable bushing mounted in said seating means for holding` the penetrating member in operative position.
3. In combination, a heel, a series of nails projecting upwardly therefrom for attaching the heel to a shoe, each nail having independent individual replaceable means connecting it with the heel.
4. A shoe heel having a metallic body portion With nails for attaching the heel to a shoe, and set screws embracing the nails.
5. The combination, with a heel having a threaded opening therein, of a nail adapted to rest Within said opening, a set screw having a tubular passage therein and adapted to engage the said threaded portion and to abut the head of the nail, whereby the nail may be removably secured to the said heel.
JAMES D. FARMER.
