To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD NELSON, a citizeny of the United States, Vand-a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and StateV of New York, have invented a` new and Improved Construction for Gas Producers, of which thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description. j
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in gas-producing fur@ naces, and it pertains more particularly to a new and improved mechanism fo-r operating the purge cap thereof. Y
In the general type of construction heretofore employed, the purge-cap carrying element is supported vby a framework independent of the furnace body. This construction, owing to the warping of the furnace, moves the same out of registerV with the purge-cap opening and leaves a'space through which gas escapes.
It is one of the. primary objects of the present invention to provide means whereby the purge cap is carried by a truck, thesupports of which arecarried by the furnace itself in such a manner that should 'the furnace warp, the purge cap will not be thrown out of register with the furnace but will be carried therewith toits Vwarped position.
vIt is a kfurther object of the invention to provide a stationary track and a movable track, the latter serving to lift the truck in order to permit of its rolling along the stationary track. Y Y
It is a further object ofthe invention to provide means by whichthe movab-letrack and the purge-cap carrying truck are operated in properly timed relation.
With the above and other objects in view, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in Vwhich-- Figure 1 is a top plan view of the mechanism constructed ink accordance with the present invention; l 1

Referring more particularly to the'drawings, the reference numeral 10 designates the upper portion of a gas-producing furnace,

Suitab-ly mounted between these guide lugs 16 and its respective stationary track 14, there is a movable track 17, and these tracks 17 are each narrower thanits respective stationary track 14. lMounted in brackets carried by each of the stationary tracks 14, there are rollers 18, and the movable tracks 17. heretofore referred to are adapted to roll thereon. Each. of these movable tracks 17 is notched at each end, as at 19, and such 'notches arey adapted to receive the rollers 18 to permit of the lowering of the movable 80 tracks 17. y f. When the purge cap is set in position, the wheels 13 of the truck are adapted to be received within recesses 20 to prevent any accidental movement of the truckfrelative to the stationary tracks. Y
The reference' numeral 30 designates a hydraulic cylinder of suitable design, and the piston 31 thereof. is connected to the 33. Connected to a crank y34 carried by the, shaft' 36, there is a lever 35,v and such `lever is connected, as at 36, to a bell. crank lever 37 which in turn is connected yas at 38 to a lever 39connected to the movable track 17 There are preferably two of these mechanisms, there being one at each side of lthe track.

as at 40, it being understood that there are two of these mechanisms, one adjacent each track member, a shaft v33 heretofore mentioned being mounted in suitable bearings 40 carried by a frame structure 41 sup ported in any desired manner.
At one end of the frame there is a transversely extending bar or brace 112, and such bar' or brace carries a bumper 1.3, with which the door-carrying truck is adapted to en gage when the truck is moved to position to close thedoor.
The device operates in the following manner:
l/Vith the parts in the position shown in Fig. 2, the purge cap is shown in its closed position. When it is desired to open .the door, the hydraulic cylinder is operated to rock the shaft 33, and through the medium of the lever 35 the movable tracks 17 are reciprocated beneath the wheels 13 until the lowermost surfaces of said tracks 17 ride up, respectively, on the rollers 18. This elevates the movable tracks 17 and lifts the wheels 13 out their respective notches 20. rl`his lifting of the wheels 13 out of their respective notches 20, elevates the truck and lifts vthe charging opening cover from the charging opening of the producer furnace 10. At this point the lever 87 operates upon the lever 39 and reciprooates or moves the truck along the stationary tracks 14e carrying the purge cap with it, and leaving the purge-cap opening exposed.
After the furnace has been purged, the hydraulic cylinder 30 is again operated to move the truck in position over the furnace, and after the tracks 17 have been lowered, the purge cap will be lowered into position by reason of the wheels 13 passing into their respective notches 2O and the purge cap will be securely retained in closed position.
From the foregoing it is apparent 'that should the furnace 1() warp or become distorted during this operation, owingto the fact that the several tracks are carried by the upper end thereof, they travel therewith and any warping would not tend to leave an openinn' around the purge cap through which gases could escape.
Thilo in the present instance the invention has been described as used in connection with the purge-cap of a producer furnace, it is obvious that it may be used in other connections, such, for example, as charging doors and the like.
That is claimed is:
1. ln a gas producer furnace, a purge cap, a truck for supporting the same, a track upon which said truck is adapted to roll, means for' receiving the wheels of the truck to prevent movement thereof along said track, and means for disengaging the wheels from said first-mentioned means to permit of the wheels rolling along said track, said last-mentioned means including a movable member associated with each of the track elements of said track ,and located in a position beneath the wheels, and fluid operated mechanism operable to move the movable members to .elevate said truck and for' subsequently moving said truck along said track.
2. In a gas producer furnace, a purge cap, a truck for supporting the same, a 'track upon which said truck is adapted to roll, means for receiving the wheels of the ,truck to prevent movement thereof along said track, means for disengaging the wheelsy from said irst-n'ientionedmeans to permit of the wheels rolling along said track, said last-mentioned means including a movable member associated with each of the track elements of said track and located a position beneath the wheels, and means .for elevating said members.
8. ln a gas producer furnace, a purge cap, a wheeled truck for supporting the purge cap, a track upon which said truck is adapted to travel, means for' receiving` the wheels of the truck to prevent movement thereof along said track, a member associated with each of the track elements of said track and located in positions beneath the wheels, the lower edge of each of said members being irregular, a pair of'rollers in contact with the lower edge of each member so that upon movement of the members and by virtue of the irregular edges, said membersmay be raised, and mechanism operable to move said members to raise the same to raise the truck vertically Yand to subsequently move said truck along said track.
