My; inventionrelates to appliances for de-' 10 tachably connecting locomotive engines and their tenders, and is of the general class or type of that set forth in Letters Patent of the United States No. 1,293,315, granted and issued to me under date of February 4, 1919.
The object of my present invention isto provide an appliance of such type which shall be suitably and desirablyapplicable in connection with locomotives in which space limitations'prevent the application of the pin type of drawbars heretofore ordinarily applied. a a
The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth.
The increase in the number of locomotives of present standard construction, which are equipped with boosters, or mechanical stokers, or both, renders it necessaryto provide means for coupling the engine and tender, which shall be exempt from the eX-' treme difiiculty, and sometimes impossibil ity, of applying and removing draw bars of the present types, by reason of the location of the accessories above mentioned, immediately above and below the usual location of the draw bar pin. Reduction of the space occupied vertically by the draw barappliance, therefore becomes essential, and my invention is designed toso accomplish it as to avoid the objection above noted, without impairing the strength of the connection or involving substantial increased structural or operative cost.
vIn the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view, in elevation, of the adjoining portions of a locomotive and tender, illustrating an application of my invention; Fig. 2, a plan View, partly in section, and on an enlarged scale, of an appliance embodying my invention; and, Fig. 3, a vertical longi-v tudinal central section through the same.
In the practice of my invention, referring I descriptively. to the specific embodiment thereof which is herein exemplified, the locomotive, A, is herein shown as equipped with a mechanical stoker, a, .by which fuel is transferred from the tender, B, to the 'ffireboX=of..the. locomotive. 5 It is-also shown ;.as equipped with: a f booster,. orauxiliary .tractio'n. engine, C, which: islmounted. on the trailing .ItruclnY D, The respective location of the stoken :arid the. booster, and .tlief'fac't I that sufli'cient clearance :must be :provided,
above 'thelbooster, in oiiderl'that' itmay oscilfilateawith its support, inhpassing'overpuneven track,' a1id, suflicielit, clearance ,bealso provided for the insertion, in a vertical direction, of'the draw bar pm, if of the-ordi- V nary-type, will indicate the difliculty, before stated of applyin such type. The draw bar appliance of my invention,
for the detachable connection of the loco motive and tender, which is herein set forth,
is of substantially the following construction, duplex draw bar, extending normally parallel with the longitudinal central plane of the locomotive, have heads on their forward ends, and are coupled to a draw bar pocket,
3, fixed to the rear of the frameof the 1000- motive, bya substantially horizontal connecting member, in the form of a draw bar The two members, 1 and 1 of the pin, 2, which passes through eyes, 1 in the heads ofthe draw bars, and is preferably,
as shown, of substantially rectangular sec tion. The draw bar pin'is insertiblefrom either side of the locomotive, and extends entirely through, and'bears on, the draw bar pocket, 3. The top and bottom faces of r the eyes, 1 of the draw bars, are inclined in opposite directions, so as to make the eyes of greater depth at their front than I their rear ends, in order to accommodate the rise and'fall of the'tender, relatively to the locomotive, in'passing. over uneven track, and their front and rear ends are convexly curved, as shown in Fig. 2, to admit of the angular horizontal movement ofthe draw bars, when the locomotive is passing a curve r of the track; Lugs, 3 are formed on the a sto in 4 assin throu h a stop Jlate' P P a V 7 P o a: l I
5 which is secured to the bottom 01": the draw bar pocket, 5, which holds the'pivot block, 6, vertically in position.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a railroad draft gear, the combination with two vehicles, of duplicate draw bars, pivotally connected on vertical axes to one of said vehicles; a draw bar pocket, fixed on the other vehicle; a substantially horizontal connecting pin, fitting in said pocket and coupling the draw bars thereto; and removable means for securing the connecting pin in operative position.
2. In a railroad draft gear, the combination with two vehicles, of a pivot block, fitted to move about its axis on one of said vehicles; a duplex draw bar; the two sections of which are pivotally connected to the pivot block; and a substantially horizontal connecting member, coupling the draw bar sections to the other vehicle. 7
3. In a railroad draft gear, the combination with two vehicles, of a pivot block rotatably mounted on one of said vehicles, duplex draw bars pivotally secured at one end in said block on vertical axes, a draw bar pocket carried by the other vehicle, and a substantially rectangular connecting pin carried by said pocket and passing through the other ends of said draw bars, the eyes in said ends being of tapered section to accommodate relative vertical movements 0 the vehicles.
