To support certain of the parts I provide a pair of angular bracket members arranged one near each end of the carriage and each comprising a vertical forwardly extending branch or arm 28, a horizontal forwardly extending branch or arm 29, an upright vertical portion or short neck and at the top thereof an angularly disposed bar-like portion 31. Each bracket member 2831 is secured to a web portion 3 of the rear bar by headed screws 32. The tie-rod 22 passes through bearing openings formed in the bracket arms 28 near their forward ends, an additional support for said tie rod being thus provided. Secured by screws to the outer webs 3 are flat springs 34, the for. ard free ends of said springs being so shaped as to engage effectively with the under portions of the enlargements 20 of the arms 20. The springs 34 press upward constantly against the arms, and their tension is thereby transmitted to the carriers 18 and the main and supplementary feed roller devices, the spring means or devices 34L tending constantly to maintain the feed roller elements 10 and 13 in spring pressed engagement with the under side of the platen 5. The sections 10 and 13 of the feed rollers protrude through cut-outs or openings 35 and 36 formed respectively in the rear and forward portions of a paper deflector or apron 37, said deflector being pivotally supported from the pivoted arms 20. To this end the deflector supporting arms 38 are pivoted at their rearends on shouldered pivot screws 39, which are threaded into the outer faces of the bosses or enlargements 20" of the two outside arms 20. The arms 38 extend forward and at their forward ends are provided with outwardly extending lateral bearing pins 40 which are engaged by perforations in ears 4-1 extending downward from the deflector 37, the deflector being thus pi v otally supported at the forward ends of the arms 38. Portions-of the deflector projecting rearward between the feed roller sections 10 may rest on the small supporting rolls 10. The deflector is constantly pressed upwardly at its forward side by spring means comprising con'iparatively weak wire springs 42 that are carried by headed pins 43 extending laterally outward from the arms 20. One free end portion of each spring bears against the associate hub 21 and the other end portion re-acts against a pin 44 carried by the support or arm 38. The arms of the springs 45 tend constantly to spread or separate and the re-action resulting presses upward constantly the f0rward portion of the paper deflector 37. The upward movement of the deflector is however limited by the pins 44 which are extended laterally inward from the arms 38 far enough to underlie the associate carriers or cradles 18, acting as stops thereagainst,
the construction being such that the upward movement of the deflector is limited by the feed roll carriers. The paper introduced at the rear is guided into the bight between the platen and the paper deflector 37 over a two-part paper table, the forward part only of said table being shown herein and numbered 45. The paper table part l5 is secured to the bar-like portions on supports 31 of the bracket members and said paper table part is formed at its forward end with fingers 4G to it into corresponding notches or openings in the rear end of the paper deflector 37, thus blocking the opening between the two parts so that paper may not slip through.
Passing between the platen 5 and the deflector 37 at the under side of the platen the paper is advanced at the front side into the control of paper finger contrivances or guides 47. Each of these is preferably made of a singl piece of sheet metal and comprises an upri ht portion 48 and an integral horizontal disposed portion 49. The portion at its upper end above the printing line carries a pressure roll 50 which is mounted on a pivot 51 carried by the paper finger. The horizontal portion 429 is provided at its lower side with a contact device which is effective to actuate line locking mechanism not shown herein. N ear its ends he horizontal portion 49 is provided with pairs of clips or engaging devices 53 struck from the sheet metal of the portion a9 and which it over a rod or rectangular supporting bar 5a which also carriers an inset platen scale 55. Said barv 5% extends along the platen at its front side and below the printing line, and the contrivances or fingers 47 are slidably mounted on said bar. Screw stops secured to the end portions of the bar 5% limit the outward movement of the paper fingers 47, of which there are preferably two. In order to facilitate the removal of the paper fingers from the bar, the latter near its outer ends is cut away at the under side, as indicated at 57 enabling the paper finger when slid down to the notch or cutaway 57 to be unhooked or pulled forward, so as to be readily removed without displacing the bar itself, as graphically shown in Fig. 4, which illustrates the left-hand paper finger in process of removal. Preferably the inner clip at the lower side of each part -19 is straight and not hook shaped as are the other clips 53. The straight clip 53 facilitates ready removal of the paper finger, permitting the cut-away to be shortened, since it only necessary that the lower hooked clip 53 be opposite to it to enable the paper finger to be slipped off the bar. The paper finger bar 54k and the paperfingers are pivotally mounted, and to this end the bar 54 is provided near its outer ends with rearwardly extending lugs or tongues 58, said lugs being perforated laterally, as indicated'at 59, to fit over and engage with hearing pins carried by the forward end portions of the bracket arms 29 and extending laterally inward therefrom. Also, the paper 1, and the paper deflector are similarly controlled and released by flexing their pressure springs so as to relieve the paper fingers and paper deflector of the spring pressure towhich they are normally sub jected. The springs for the feed rollers and for the paper fingers are oppositely acting, the former pressing upward and the latter exerting a downward pressure, and, consequently, oppositely acting releasing devices in the form of duplicate crank arms are provided to act oppositely on the springs.
Various changes may be made without departing from my invention.
What 3; claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a front strike typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen carrier, a rod thereon, arms pivoted on said rod, cradles pivoted on said arms, parallel feed rollers carried by said cradles at their opposite ends and co-operating with the platen at its under side, springs constantly pressing against said arms, and means acting directly against said springs to flex them and permit said feed rollers to drop from the platen through gravity.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen carrier, a rod thereon, arms pivoted at their ends on said rod, carriers pivoted between their ends at the opposite ends of said arms, parallel feed rollers carried by said carriers at their opposite ends, separate springs constantly pressing against said arms, and releasing means comprising separate devices each act'- ing directly against one of said springs 3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a feed roller, a paper finger, spring means for maintaining said feed roller in spring pressed engagement with the platen, separate and independent spring means for maintaining said paper finger in spring-pressed engagement with the platen, and releasing means comprising independent devices acting directly on said independent spring means to relieve the pressure on said feed roller and said paper finger.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a feed roller, a paper finger, spring means for maintaining said feed roller and said paper finger in spring pressed engagement with the platen, releasing means acting directly on said spring means to relieve the pressure on said feed roller and said paper finger, and a key connected to said paper finger and eifcctive to release it independently.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a feed roller, a paper finger, a paper deflector through which said feed roller protrudesto engage with the platen,
spring njieans for maintaining said feed roller, said paper finger, and said deflector in spring grossed engagement with the platen, said spring means con'iprising separate and independent springs for said feed roller, said paper finger and said deflector, and releasing fingers acting directly on the separate springs of said feed roller and said paper finger to relieve the pressure, on said feed roller, said paper finger, and said paper deilector.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a feed roller, a paper finger, a paper deflector through which said feed roller protrudes to engage with the platen, spring means for maintaining said feed roller, said paper finger, and said deflector in spring pressed engagement with the platen, a release key, and oppositely acting devices controlled thereby to engage directly with and render said spring means ineffective, said devices being normally disconnected from said spring means and being eiiective to act directly thereagainst to flex the same.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a feed roller, a paper finger, a paper deflector through which said feed roller protrudes to engage with the platen, separate springs for said feed roller, said paper finger, and said paper deflector, and releasing means comprising projections acting directly on the separate springs for the feed roller and the paper linger to afford a release of said feed roller, said paper finger and said deflector.
In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a carriage frame, a tie rod thereon, arms 'pivoted'on said tie rod, cradles pivoted between their ends on the end portions of said arms, feed roller shafts bearing on the end portions of said cradles, sectional feed rollers on said shafts, a paper deflector pivoted on said carriage frame and provided with openings through which said sectional feed rollers protrude, a paper finger bar pivoted on said carriage frame, paper fingers slidably mounted on said bar, springs acting against said bar to press said paper fingers towards the platen, other springs acting against said paper deflector to press it towards the platen, other springs one for each of said arms to apply pressure to said feed rollers, and key controlledrreleasing devices acting directly on all of said springs to release respectively the paper fingers, the paperdefiector, and the feed rollers concurrently.
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a carriage frame, a tie rod thereon, arms pivoted on said tie rod, cradles pivoted between their ends on the end portions of said arms, feed roller shafts bearing on the end portions of said cradles, sectional feed rollers on said shafts, a paper deflector pivoted on said carriage frame and provided with openings through which said sectional feed rollers protrude, a paper finger bar pivoted on said carriage frame, paper fingers slidably mounted on said bar, springs acting against said bar to press said paper fingers towards the platen, other springs acting against said paper deflector to press it towards the platen, other springs one for each of said arms to apply pressure to said feed rollers, key controlled releasing devices acting directly on all of said springs to release respectively the paper fingers, the paper deflector, and the feed rollers concurrently, and a key secured to said paper finger bar for separately releasing said paper fingers.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen and a co-operating feed roller device comprising metal hubs, feed roller sections on said hubs, and stub shaft portions driven into said hubs and constituting therewith a unitary shaft member.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a co-operating main feed roller device, and a supplementary feed roller device also co-operative with the platen, each feed roller device comprising metal hubs, feed roller sections on said hubs,
and stub shaft portions driven into said hubs and constituting therewith a unitary shaft member.
12. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen; a co-operating feed roller device comprising metal hubs, feed roller sections on said hubs, and stub shaft portions driven into said hubs and constituting therewith a unitary shaft member; rubber supporting rolls on said hubs between said feed roller sections; and a paper deflector partly supported by said rolls.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a carriage frame, supporting arms pivoted on said frame, carriers pivoted on said supporting arms, feed rollers mounted on said carriers, other arms pivoted on said supporting arms, and a paper deflector pivoted on said other arms.
14:. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a carriage frame, supporting arms pivoted on said frame, carriers pivoted on said supporting arms, feed rollers on said deflector arms.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a carriage frame, supporting arms pivoted on said frame, feed roller arms pivoted betweentheir ends on said supporting arms, parallel feed rollers mounted on said feed roller arms, paper deflector arms pivoted at their ends on said 7 supporting arms co-axially with said feed roller arms, a paper deflector mounted on said deflector arms, springs carried by said supporting arms acting against said paper deflector, and separate feed roller springs supported on said carriage frame and acting against said supporting arms. 7
17 In a typewriting machine, the com-.
bination of a platen, a carriage, a rod or bar thereon, and a paper finger provided with clips whereby said finger is slidably supported on said rod or bar, said rod or bar being cut away near one end to facilitate removal of said paper finger without displacing said rod or bar.
18. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a carriage, a rectangular barsupported therefrom, a one-piece sheet metal paper finger provided with clips to slidably engage'said bar, said bar being provided with a notch or cut-away and cerand State of New York, this 13th day of May, A.
