OLIVER L. NUNIVILLER, OF' FINDLAY, OHIO.
, WASHING MACHINE.
Application filed September 19, 1924. Serial No. 738,669.
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, OLIVER L. NUNIVILLER, a citizen of the United States, residin at Findlay, in the county of-Hancock and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful \Vashing Machine, of which the following is a specification.
- The device forming the subject matter of this application is a washing machine, and the invention aims to provide a device of the class described in which the receptacle which carries the dirty clothes is raised out of the liquid in a tub and lowered into the liquid in a tub, the clothes being subjected to pressure, yield-ably, whilst the receptacle and the clothes are being raised, novel means being provided for imparting vertical reciprocation to the receptacle.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that sort to which the invention appertains.
lVith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made with in the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in vertical transverse section, a device constructed in accordance with the invention, parts being in elevation;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view wherein parts are broken away.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a frame 1 which may be variously constructed, depending upon the taste of the manufacturer or the user. As shown, but not of necessity, the frame 1 includes legs 2 connected by a base 3, standards 50 being connected to the upper ends of the legs, the standards carrying a support including a platform 5, and cross pieces 6 mounted in the standards and upholdingthe platform. Retainers, in the form of bars 7 are mounted removably in the upper ends of the standards 50. For the support of a wash tub or any other article one of the standards 50 may carry a laterally extended table 8. In general, however, the frame may be made as in the tube 11 of the tub 10, a cross head 16 being connected at 29, or otherwise, to the upper end of the plunger. Depending brackets 17 are connected by nuts 18 to the cross head 16 and extend downwardly between the tube 11 of the tub 10 and the tube 11 of the receptacle 12. At their lower ends, the brackets 17 are equipped with lateral arms 19 extended beneath the bottom of thereceptacle 12, so that when the plunger 15 is pulled upwardly, the foraminous receptacle 12 will be raised. The upper end of a pitman 20 is pivoted to the lower end of the plunger 15, the lower end of the pitman being pivoted eccentrically to a crank disk 21 on a shaft 22 carried by a bearing 23 on the base 3, suitable gearing 24 being provided, whereby the shaft 22 may be rotated at the desired speed from a prime mover such as an electric motor (not shown).
An annular pressure plate 25 is disposed in the foraminous receptacle 12 about the tube 14 of the receptacle. An annular abutment plate 26 is located in the tub 10, about the tube way 11 of the tub. Compression springs 27 are secured to the pressure plate Y25 and to the abutment plate 26, the abutment plate 26 being located in contact with a cover 28 for the tub, the cover being held down by the retainers 7.
In practical operation, when the shaft 22 is rotated, the crank disk 21 and the pitman 20 impart vertical reciprocation to the plunger 15, the brackets 17-19 causing the foraminous receptacle 12 to reciprocate within the tub 10. \Vhen the receptacle 15 moves upwardly, the pressure plate 25, being sustained yieldably by the springs 27 presses the water out of the garments into the receptacle 12, through the perforations in the receptacle 12. The clothes are lifted out of the water in the tub, and, at the same time, the water in the garments is pressed out of them and the result is a better circulation of .water through the arments, and an unusually efficient cleaning of the garments.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a tub provided in its bottom with an u standing tube disposed approximately in t e axis of the tub, a foraminous receptacle mounted for reciprocation in the tub and provided in its bottom with an upstandin tube located about the tube of the tub, a p unger' located in the tube of the tub, a cross head mounted on the upper end of the plunger, an ular.
brackets connected at their upper en s to the cross head, the brackets extending downwardl between the tubes, and being prolonge between the bottom of the tub and the bottom of the receptacle, means for imparting reciprocation to the plunger, an annular pressure member located in the receptacle about the tube of the receptacle, and spring means cooperating with the pressure member to resist the upward movement of the pressure member yieldably'.
2. In a device of the class described, a tub provided in its bottom with an upstanding tube disposed approximately in the axis of the tub, a foraminous receptacle mounted for reciprocation in the tub and provided in its bottom with an n standing tube located about thetube of t e tub, an annular pressure member located within the receptacle and disposed about the tube of the receptacle, spring means for resisting the upward movement of the pressure member, a plun er mounted to reciprocate in the tube 0 the tub, means for imparting re- Weiprocation to the plunger, and means for connecting the upper end of the plunger with the receptacle.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my s1gna-.
'ture in the presence of two witnesses.
OLIVER L. NUNIVILLER.
