which an arm 21 is in contact which is keyed upon the shaft 23' (Figs. 1 and 6). From shaft 23 an arm 2% extends upwards and as arm 21 (Fig. 1)v looses its hold in consequence of the yielding of roller 20 sup ported by the measuring rail 17 this movement is transmitted also to arm 24 and transferred by means of rod 25 upon the angle lever 26, 28 fulcrumed at 27 and consequently upon the pump rod 29 and pump piston 30 (Figs. 1, 6, 9). The metal 31 below the pump piston 30 is driven through channel 32 (Figs.6 and 9) and through the orifice 33 (Fig. 8) into the type chamber 34:
covered by the jammed matrix (Figs. 1,
6, 9). Between channel 32 and orifice 33, Fig. 6, a space 33 is, arranged which is designed to receive the metal cut off at two sides of the cast type and to conduct this metal to a collecting chamber.
During the casting of a type or .of a spacer another operation has taken place. Upon shaft 23 (Figs. 1, 6) an arm 35 is keyed which by the action of a spring 36 has brought an eccentrically mounted toothed wheel 37 in gear with a second continuously revolving toothed wheel 38. As the eccentrically mounted toothed wheel 37 communicated its movement by the inter-' mediary of pins 41, 42 (Figs. 1, 16) to the centering rod 43 for the matrix which trav erses the clamping device 18 (Figs. 1 and 9), said rod having centered the matrix by engaging with one of the centering holes 14 (Figs. 2, 3, 5, 6, 16) and it participates now first-in the return movement, arm 14L lifting at the same-time the matrix off the cast type in the casting chamber through the in-- termediary of the lever 10.
The arm 21 acts further upon the roller 46 of a rail a5 the arm 17 of which pulls the cast type from the mould at which occasion the burr in the orifice 33 (Fig. 8) is cut ofi by the knife 50. As the matrix is not fixed upon thecasting mould but upon lever 14 burrs havebeen formed also at the points of the matrix which have not been clamped and these burrs are removed by knives 48, 49 (Fig. 9) arranged upon thetwo jaws of the casting mould.
The shaft of the eccentric toothed wheel 37 (Fig. 1) has in the meantime been pushed to the end of the travel and the cast type in chamber 34 has arrived opposite the ejecting channel 51. With the eccentric toothed Wheel 37 (Figs, 1, 9) a roller 52 has moved which is mounted upon the rear side of said toothed wheel by means of a lever arm and this pulley has advanced a slide 53. Two
stops 54, 55 upon slide 53 have drawn along element is attached to a two-armed lever,
61 which pulls thus back the type slide 62 with the ejectors 63, 6 1 (Figs. 9, 14) so that the type ejector 59 can bring the cast type into the type collecting channel 65.
As the shaft of the eccentric toothed wheel having exceeded its greatest distance from the driving wheel moves towards the initial position shown on the drawings all the elements operated by arm 21 (Fig. 1) return to the initial positionsso that the operating lever 14- for the casting mechanism comes with its point in contact with the flap 16 which supports the same until it is deprived again of its support by the depression of another key so that another type or spacer is cast.
Suppose the following phrase had to be typed: Durch diese hohle Gasse' muss er komnien? and this phrase could be set in the space of one line with the exception of the last character 11 and the full stop so that the provisional spacing between the words would have to be shortened accordingly. In the collecting channel 65 the characters D, u, r, c for the word Durch are already set'. If now the last character 11 for the word Durch has been typed and cast the first I spacer has to be inserted. Vith this objectin view the key 66 is depressed so that, by
means of an arm 67 the movement is trans mitted to a curved rail 68 (Fig. 6). This curved rail 68 engages with a tooth 69 of the justifying slide 71 (Figs. 6, 9, 15) and shifts thisslide for the thickness of the provisional spacer 70 whereby this spacer is inserted be- 66 only a provisional spacer is inserted into the line which is being composed but the casting mechanism is not operated. The next following word diese is now typed and the second spacer is inserted, whereupon the word hohle and the third spacer, and the word Gasse and the fourth and last provisional spacer are typed. The justifying slide 71 has thus been moved for the lengthof thefour. spacers 70. and catch. 78 has dra wn along arm Jihwith the hor-izontal rod 7 (Fig. 6) wherefro-mligesults'thatthe hook- 76 of thesuspended arm 741 comes in engagement with; the stud-77 and,aften the word mussl has. been? typed a typeless matrix is broughtupon the-casting mould 1 two plates 86,8? of this.typespusher 85"ad Vance thnoi'i-gh: the: openings '88; .89 of the back wallQOwofxthea line collecting channel (Fig. and push theline, which; has been collected; in L this: channel into the} galley 80, the front wall 0110f the: type; collecting;

As soon as the fourth provisional spacer 70 (Figs. 6, 15) has been brought back to its proper place, an abutment 130 has pushed back the lever 7 9 and the rod 7 5 has brought the hook 76 of the suspended arm 74 out of engagement with stud 77. Upon the type return slide 116 another fixed stud 131 is' arranged which type return slide 119 pulls back the lever The releasing arm 133 and the nose115 comes out of engagement with 126 so that the justifying carriage 112, the two type pushers 63, 64:

If now in the phrase cited by way of example the word muss should be printed in special type the segment block 135 (Figs. 9,13) could be shifted by means of a reversing key, the carriage 136 (which has been shown on the drawings only at one side of the machine) being moved by the traction element 137 (Fig. 13) from the key board. The segment block 135 with the matrix levers could be eventually lifted off thecarriage 136 and exchanged as the individual matrix levers 10 are not connected with the key board by a continuous rod and lever system. 1 V
