To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ELMER SORRELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dunreith, in the county of Henry and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Nut Lock; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full. clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled 1n the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a nut lock.
It is aimed to provide a novel, improved and simplified construction wherein a key is used for disposition in the shank of the bolt and to bite or disrupt the threads in the nut, and particularly to provide such a key and shank with a coacting lug and recess normally preventing accidental de* tachment of the key but enabling the key to be forced from engagement with the bolt and nut when desired.
Additional objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustratinoan operative embodiment.

Referring specifically to the drawings, a bolt 10 is shown of conventional form having a shank as at 'l1 providing the usual screw threads 12 at one end adapted to be engaged by the screw threads of a nut 13 and specifically indicated. at 14.
The bolt shank 11 is longitudinally grooved or slotted as at 15 so as to receive a fastening key 16 which is slightly resilient so that a lug 17 extending therefrom may clip into a recess, notch or depression 18 at the base of the groove 15. The inner portion of the base wall of groove or slot 15 is inclined or cam-shaped as shown so that as the key 16 engages it, the lat- LOCK.

In using the invention, the nut 14 is threaded to the shank 11 in the absence of the key 16. lVhen the nut is appropriately tightened and in place, the key 16 is inserted with its pointed end foremost into the slot 15 and then driven home by means of a hammer whose blows are dealt against the head 20. This driving of the key causes the edge at 19 to bite the threads 14 and disrupt them with a view to locking the bolt and nut against independent rotation and suiiicient driving of the key causes the lug 17 to spring into the de pression 18 and thus add to the security of fastening of the key against accidental displacement from the bolt and nut.
It will be realized that the construction is such that if the nut is to be used, a jimmy and other tools may be used in connection with the head 20 to move the lug 17 out of depression 18 and then move the key 16 completely from the slot 15.
Various changes in the details may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
In combination, a bolt, a nut screwthreaded to the bolt, 'said bolt having a. longitudinal slot, a key disposed in said slot and engaging the thread of the nut, said key having a substantially segmental projection, the bolt at the base of the slot having a depression shaped corresponding ly to the projection and adapted to removably lockingly conceal the projection after engagement of the key with the threads of the nut, and the base wall of said slot` being of cam-shape for coaction with the key to tilt it so as to better lock the nut.
