I-IOSE NOZZLE.
Application filed December 17, 1923. Serial No. 681,143.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. CORLEY, a citizen of the 'United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose Nozzles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an angle hose nozzle, and has for its object to provide an improved construction of so-called cellar pipe adapted to be attached to a lire hose, the same having a portion extending at an angle downwardly to project through a hole in the floor to throw water in all directions about the room below.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a pivotally-mounted discharge nose at the lower end of the drop pipe and an operating handle mounted on the upper end of the rotatable drop pipe and a connecting rod between the nose member and the handle extending through an opening in the rotatable portion of the drop pipe whereby this pipe may be caused to make a complete revolution if desired without interference, to discharge the water from its nose member in all directions into the room below where it is being operated.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Figure 2 is a side elevation partly in section illustrating the interior construction of the operating parts of the device.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Itis found in the practical operation of nozzles of this character which are adapted to extend through a hole in the floor to discharge water or chemicals into the room below to extinguish a lire therein, of importance to so construct the device that it may be completely rotated so as to bring the extinguishing fluid into contact with all parts of the room, either the floor, the ceiling, or all parts of the side walls, and the following is a detailed description of one means by which these advantageous results may be accomplished With reference to the drawings, 10 designates the hollow head member of the device to one side of which is connected the neck 11 carrying a shut-off valve 12 adapted to be operated by a handle 13 and beyond this neck member may be attached a short section of pipe 14 having a coupling 15 to be connected to the usual fire hose to be operated.
In this outer cylindrical head member 10, I have mounted an inner head or cage member 16 which is provided with an upper wall 17 and a lower wall 18 connected by upright bars 19, the lower wall being provided with an extending flange 2O which rests against a packing 21, and a collar 22 is threaded onto the upper end of this cage to be adjusted to engage a packing ring 23 whereby this cage member may be rotated in the head 10 while under pressure and sealed against leakage ofvwater therefrom.
On the upper head plate, I have mounted i a standard 24 in which is pivoted an operating handle 25, and to the lower head plate 18 I have connected a drop pipe 26 which may be threaded into this lower plate and at the lower end of this pipe I have connected a head 27 in which is pivotally mounted a discharge nose 28 through which water or extinguishing fluid is directed against the lire. This nozzle member 28 is connected to the outer end 29 of the operating lever 25 by the connecting rod 30 which extends through a tubular opening 31 in the cage member within the inner circumference of the head member 10. This tubular opening may be formed if desired by drilling a post or standard 32 that extends between the upper and lower heads of the cage through the cage, whereby it will be seen that no packing box is required about the rod to prevent it from leaking; also by my improved construction the drop pipe may be caused to make a complete revolution on its axis without being interfered with by this rod for the purpose of discharging lire-extin guishing fluid against all portions of the room into which the nozzle is positioned. Then again, by the use of the valve 12 in the extension 11 the water may be shut oil' at the nozzle when desired.
The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device lis susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A hose nozzle comprising two right angularly disposed sections, one rotatably connected to the other, a discharge nose pivoted to the end of the rotatable section, a noze op'- erating rod passing through the rotatable connection within its circle of rotation, and means for preventing the water passing through said sections from contacting with said rod.
2. In a hose nozzle, a head, a rotatable member in said head, a drop pipe attached to said member and rotatable therewith, a discharge nose pivotally attached to the lower end of said drop pipe, said member having a tubular opening therethrough adjacent its periphery and outside of the outer surface or' the drop pipe, a connecting rod passing through said opening and attached to said nose for operating the same, and means for operating said connecting rod and rotating said head.
3. A hose nozzle comprising a head, a rotatable cage within the head having top and bottom members held in spaced relation by rods, a drop pipe secured to the bottom member, a tubular member extending through the cage adjacent the periphery thereof and outside the circumference of the drop pipe, an operating handle pivotally secured to the top member of the cage, a dis` charge nose pivotally mounted to the bottom of the drop pipe, a link connecting one end of the handle with the discharge nose and passing through the tubular member.

A hose nozzle comprising a head, a cage rotatably mounted within the head, a drop pipe secured to the lower wall of the cage, a tubular member extending through the cage and outside of the circumference of the drop pipe, a pivotal discharge nose secured to the lower end of the drop pipe, a standard carried by one side of the upper wall of the cage and diametrically opposite the tubular member extending through the cage, an operating handle pivotally mounted on the standard with one of its ends extending over the tubular member, and a link extending from the end of the operating handle through the tubular member and connected at its lower end to the pivotal discharge nose.
