Description

Aug. 25, 1925 S. HOROWITZ WINDOW LOOK Filed Dec. 10, 1924 m T N E V m Patented Aug. 25, 1925.
SIMON HOROVVITZ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PATENT OFFICE.
WINDOW LOCK.
Application filed December 10, 1924. Serial No. 754,953.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON IIonowirz, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York city, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vindow Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to window locks and in particular to one which may be placed on the lower sash of a window to securely engage the upper sash to lock the same.
A particular object of the invention is to provide a lock which will allow the window to be opened a short distance from the top or bottom and locked in open position so that air may be admitted to the room withoutpermitting the entrance of a thief.
A further object is to provide a device which may be used as a lock and which may also be used to prevent the sashes, which have became worn and loose, from rattling.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character referred to which may be made up of few parts, without excessive cost and one which will securely lock and hold a. window.
Referring to the drawing wherein I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention;
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a portion of an upper and lower sash of a window showing my improved lock applied thereto,
Figure 2 is a side elevation in section through the sashes and lock showing the construction of the latter;
Figure 3 is a view in perspective of the special key used with the lock; and
Figure 1 is an enlarged side view partly in section showing the sash engaging memher and its connection to the adjusting screw.
Referring to the drawing in detail 5 in dicatcs the lower and 6 the upper sash of a window in which are held the usual panes of glass 7.
At one corner of the upper edge 8 of the lower sash 5 I attach my locking device which consists of a bracket member 9 having a depending portion 10, a base 11 and an upright portion 12.
The depending portion 10 is provided with a suitable opening in which is disposed a screw 13 which holds the depending portion securely against the face of the sash, while a plurality of screws 14 are used tohold the base 11 against the top of the sash,
Passing through a threaded opening 15 in the upright portion 12 of the bracket I pro vide a threaded rod 16 the outer end of which is squared as at 17 to enter the socket 18 of a suitable key 19, the latter having an extended shank 20 whereby it will it into the tubular protective member 21 which is attached at one end to the upright 12 and houses the squared end 17 of the threaded rod 16.
This tubular member prevents any person from tampering with the lock unless they have the key and the key must of course have the long shank necessary to extend into the tubular member to engage the squared end of the rod so that the same may be operated.
The outer end of the rod 16 is reduced in diameter and riveted over to hold the pronged member 22 which revolves loosely thereon, so that the rod 16 can turn to force the member 22 into the upper sash 6 of the window.
The pronged member 22 sinks into the sash and of course prevents its being lowered.
If desired the window is opened slightly from the top or bottom and the lock is adjusted to prevent further opening of the window.
The lock member also serves to prevent rattling of the sashes when the same have become worn.
It is evident therefore that I have provided a window lock which has few parts, which can not be tampered with, and which will securely lock the sashes in any relative position.
Having described my invention whatI claim is:
A look for windows comprising a member adapted for attachment to one of the sashes, a threaded rod passing through said member, a revolvable head on one end of said rod, prongs on said head for engaging the other sash, a tubular housing for the op posite end of said rod, and a key having an extended shank portion whereby the same may be inserted into said housing to operate said rod.
