J. P. WRIGHT DAMPER LOCKING DEVICE Filed May 2, 1923 gnucni'oc Patented Aug. 18, 1925.
PNT
JAMES R'WRIGHT, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
DAMPER-LOCKING DEVICE.
Application filed May '2,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES P. VRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Damper-Locking Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to damper locking devices, and has for its main object to provide a device for indicating the position of and-locking the damper of a. furnace pipe and the like, which is of simple, practical, and inexpensive construction, is easily installed and neat in appearance.
For a clear understanding of the invention reference will be had to the accompanying drawings illustrating the same-and the novel features thereof will be distinctly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference are used to indicate corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is a sideview of a furnace pipe with a damper locking device constructed in accordance with my invention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is an end view of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the damper looking device, the indicating lever being in its open position and the cap being cut oil just above the same,
Fig. 4.- is a similar view, the indicating lever being in its shut position, Fig. 5 is a similar view, the indicating lever being beyond its fully open position to permit the attachment or removal of the cap,
Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view taken on line 66 of Fig. 3,
Fig. i is a perspective View of the cap, and
Fig. 8 is a perspective View of the wrench for operating the locking nut.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a pipe for a furnace or the like, in which is arranged a damper 2 for controlling the passage of smoke or other gases therethrouglr Said damper consists of a plate, which is fixed at its transverse center to a shaft 3 having its ends rotatably mounted in the opposite sides of said pipe.- One end of the shaft 3 is alsorotatably mounted in a central opening 4 of a circular base plate 5 and an opening 6 of a smaller circular ilate 7, which plates are securely 'fastene to- 1923. Serial No. 636,058.
gether and to the pipe 1 as indicated at 8, and said end of the shaft is provided with a square shank 9. An indicating lever 10 is provided with an opening at 11 corresponding to the square shank 9 for receiving the same so as to be in alignment with and to rotate with the damper for indicating the position thereof relative to being open or shut.
'In order to be able to lock the indicating lever 10 to the circular plate 7 ina set position, said circular plate is bent upwardly at 12, then horizontally at 13, and downwardly at 14; all on the arc of a circle, and said horizontal portion is provided with a slot 15 also on the arc of a circle. A bolt 16 passes up through the slot 15 and an opening 17 inthe indicating lever and its head 18 is adapted to slide between the upwardly bent edge 12 and the downwardly bent edge 14 to prevent rotation thereof when turning a locking nut 19 upon said bolt. A cylindrical cover 20 of sheet material is provided for engaging the circular base plate 5 to enclose the circular plate 7, the indicating lever 10 with the exception of the ends there-' of, the bolt 16 and the locking nut 19, and the shank end 9 of the shaft 3 to prevent tampering with said parts by an unauthorized person. The cover 20 is easily applied and held in position and adapted to be ro-' tated so as to move the indicating lever 10 therewith when the locking nut 19 is unscrewed to permit same, by meansiof the following described construction. Said cover is provided with an opening 21 through its flange for receiving the pointed end of the indicating lever 10, and a recess 22 opposite said opening for receiving or fitting over the rear end thereof. Inturned lugs 23 and 24 are provided at the inner edge of the flange of the cover 20 for entering and sliding in a circular groove 25, one sideoii which is formed by turning up a portion of the edge of the circular plate 7, and the circular baseplate 5 forms the other side of said groove. Recesses 26 and 27 are provided in the edge of the circular plate 7 for admitting the lugs 23 and 24 when the indicating lever 10 is turned to the position shown in Fig. 5, and also for permitting the withdrawal of said lugs" therethrough for allowing removal of the cover.
The groove 25 is of suflicient length to permit rotation of=the cover for rotating the indicating lever 10 and thereby actuating the damper 2 between its open and shut positions marked at 28 and 29 respectively. The circular slot 15 of the circular plate 7 is greater in length than necessary for said movement of the indicating lever and its rewrench such as indicated by 31 for operating the locking nut 19. An unauthorized person not having said special Wrench can not rotate the cover 20 to operate the damper, or remove the cover.
From the above description and drawings it will be obvious that this damper locking device is capable of accomplishing the intended purposes of simple construction, easy to assemble and install, reliable in its action, and also neat in appearance. It will be understood that slight changes in the details of construction may be made within the scope of the claims.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a damper locking device, the combination with a pi e, of a damper, a shaft for the damper, a Xed plate, the shaft being rotatably mounted in the plate, an indicating lever for rotating the shaft, means for locking the indicating lever to said plate, a cover, the cover being adapted to rotate the indicating lever and enclose said locking means, and the cover being provided with an opening for admitting means for operating said locking means, substantially as described.
2. In a damper locking device, the combination with a pi e, of a dam er, a shaft for the damper, a xed plate, tie shaft being rotatably mounted in the plate, a cross-bar indicating lever for rotating the shaft, means for locking the indicating lever to said plate, a cover enclosing said locking means, the cover having a flange, the flange of the cover being provided with an opening for receiving one end of the indicating lever, means for securing the flange of the cover opposite said opening to said plate and permitting the cover to rotate, and the flange of the cover being provided with a slot for admitting means for operating said locking means, substantially as described.
3. In a damper locking device, the combination with a pipe, of a damper, a shaft for the damper, a fixed plate, the shaft being rotatably mounted in the plate, a cross-bar indicating lever for rotating the shaft, means for locking the indicatin lever to said plate, a cover enclosing said locking means, the cover having a flange, the flange of the cover being provided with an opening for receiving one end of the indicating lever, the flange of the cover having inturned lugs oppositev said opening, said plate being provided with a circular groove at its edge for receiving said lugs, and the flange of the coverbeing provided with a slotfor admit ting means for operating said locking means, substantially as described.
4. In a damper locking device, the combination with a pipe, of. a dam er, a shaft for the damper, a fixed plate, t e shaft being rotatably mounted in the late, a crossbar indicating lever for rotating the shaft, means for locking the indicating lever to said plate, a cover enclosing said locking means, the cover having a flange, the flange of the cover being provided with an opening for receiving one end of the indicating lever, the flange of the cover having inturned lugs opposite said opening, said plate being provided with a circular groove at its edge for receiving said lugs, said plate being provided with recesses in its face for receiving said lugs of the cover and being positioned for registering therewith when the cover is rotated rearwardly beyond the quarter turn, and the flange of the cover being provided with a slot for admitting means for operating said locking means, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature.
JAMES P. WRIGHT.
