WILLIAM L. RUST, OF SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO SEASIDE OIL COMPANY, OF SUMMEBLANID, CALIFORNIA, GOB-IPQBATION OF CALIFORNIA.
EXHAUST-CHANNEL CLOSURE.
Application filed November 16, 1923. Serial No. 675,134.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VJILLIAM L. RUST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Barbara, in the county of Santa Barbara and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Exhaust- Ghannel Closures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to carburetting apparatuses, and has for an object to provide a substitute attachment to replace parts of an internal combustion engine whereby to enable the use of a richer quality of fuel than that for which the replaced parts are designed.
Certain types of internal combustion engines, and especially a type designed for tractors, are provided with means for vaporizing low-grade fuel. Vith the advent of lowered prices of the better grade of fuels, such as gasolene, it is desirable to provide a vaporizing means enabling the use of the better fuel.
Therefore, the broad object of this invention is to provide a device of simple character and inexpensive form that may be readily attached to the intake manifold of a motor, in substitution of the usual lowgrade fuel conduit and heater.
Other objects .and advantages will be made manifest in the following specification of an embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figql is a side elevation, showing the manifolds of an internal combustion engine with the present attachment combined.
Fig. 2 is a perspective of an inverted manifold of one type.
Fig. 3 is a perspective of an inverted closure for the manifold.
The present invention is shown as combined with the manifolds of an internal combustion engine of a type having an upper intake manifold 2 and a lower exhaust mani fold 3. In certain types of tractors, for instance, the Fordson, a low-grade fuel is vaporized by means including a small tube which is partly exposed directly to hot gases in the exhaust manifold. When the better grade fuel is employed, it is not necessary to thus expose the fuel conduit to the high temperature.
In the present invention a carburetor 4 is attached to a spacer flange 5 and from this is extended a tube 6 having a portion 6 extended close to the exhaust manifold and thence leading to a fitting 7 at the intake side of the intake manifold. By this arrangement and means it is practical to remove the usual internal heating coil of this type of motor and to substitute the outside tube 6 in connection with the carburetor L.
The introduction of the spacer flange 5 enables the close arrangement of the fuel tube 6 up close to the exhaust so as to obtain the advantage of the heated gases in vaporizing the fuel. When this attachment is supplied the usual outlet from the carburetor 4 is closed by a plug 8. The usual outlet closed by the plug 8 is not employed because it is desirable to dispose the conduit 6 up close to the manifold 3 as just above stated.
Certain types of manifolds 3 have, along the bottom portion, a channel 3 and it is desirable to close this channel when the present attachment is employed. This closure is obtained by means of a cap 10 having a lug 11 extending from the face which is applicable to the surface 8 surrounding the exhaust-port E. The cap 10 is provided with an aperture 10 for the exhaust pipe P.
Further embodiments, modifications and variations may be resorted to within the spirit of the invention.
lVhat is claimed is:
A closure for an exhaust manifold of a type having an exhaust-port and a lateral opening at one side of the port, said closure consisting of a cap having a pipe-hole and having a lug projecting from one face to enter and close the said lateral opening.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
WILLIAM L. RUST.
