To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that T, XVILLIAM P. Mosnmer, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safe Deposit Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in safe deposit locks, and more particularly to a construction whereby the safe-guarding of the change keys shall be insured,one object of the present invention being to provide means in a safe deposit lock which will serve to so conceal and protect the change keys that their numerical designation or character of biting cannot be ascertained by anyone after the lock leaves the factory, until the box shall have been rented and the change keys shall have been delivered to the renter.

A further object is to so construct a safe deposit lock structure carrying locked change key enclosing and concealing means, that after said change keys shall have been released and placed in the possession of a customer or box renter, thelock cannot be operated except with the use of the change key.

With these and other objects in view, the

invention consists in certain novel featuresof construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims. 7

The lock is adapted to besecured to the inner face of the door of a safe deposit box, and comprises a casing 1 provided with a cover plate 2 permanently secured in place in any suitable manner. The cover plate 2, is provided with cylinders 3, 4, which receive revoluble key plugs 5 and 6 respectively and said cylinders project through openings in the door so that both key plugs will be accessible from the front of the door in the usual manner.

The bolt 7 of the lock is mounted in casing 1 and is provided with a fence or lug 8 to coact with gatings 9 in the guard tumblers 10. The bolt 7 is provided with an e10ngated slot 11 for the passage of a post 12 fixed to the casing, and on this post, the change key tumblers 13 are 1n0unted,-said last mentioned tumblers having gatings 14 for a purpose hereinafter explained.

The key plug 6 is adapted to receive a suitable guard keyto operate the guard tumblers and bring their gatings 9 in align ment with the fence or lug 8 on the bolt, while the plug 5 is adapted to receive a work key 15; a release key 16 or a change key 17. The inner end of the key plug 5 is provided with a slotted arm 18 for cooperation with the bolt 7 to withdraw or project the same and the end of the plug 5 is seated in a circular bearing 19 rigid with the casing 1. The inner face of the casing may be made with an annular recess 21 around the bearing 19 to receive a segmental disk or approximately ring-shaped member 22 which is adapted to turn about the annular bearing 19 and the slotted boltoperating arm 18 on the plug is so located as to freely pass said segmental member 22 when the pi g 5 is turned by a key. The segmental men'iber 22 is held normally by a spring which engages a shallow notch in said member. The segment l member 19 is also provided, near one end, with a notch or recess 24C for a purpose hereinafter explained.

The chang keys 17 by means of which the renter of a box may operate the lock will be enclosed and concealed, at the factory, by a hollow cover member which is applied to the lock casing and locked thereto before the lock leaves the factory. The change keys will be located in a suitably shaped recess in the cover or concealing member, and the latter is provided at one edg with a hook-shaped lug 27, and near its opposite edge with a notched stud 28 which passes through a suitable hole in the casing 1.

A swinging fence 29 is pivot-all Y ttached to the bolt '7 so as to be disposed between the latter and the casing 1, and this fence is provided with a part 30 to engage the notched stud 28 on the cover or concealing member 25 and lock the latter (with the change keys therein) to the lock casing. A spring 31 tends to move the fence 29 in a direction away from the cover locking stud 28 as indicated in Figures 4 and 5, and the fence will be locked in the position shown in these figures after the cover or concealing member 25 shall have been removed to release the change keys, as hereinaf er explained.

The bolt 7' is provided with an elongated, slightly curved slot or opening 32, through which a lug 33, forming part of the swinging fence 29, passes and this lug will be sodisposed, when the fence is in the position shown in Figures 4L and 5, that it will engage the free ends of the change-key tumblers 13 asshown in Figure 12 and when in such position, the bolt 7 cannot be withdrawn (the fence 29 being carried by the bolt) until the change key shall have been operated to so move said tumblers that their gatings shall align with the fence lug 33.

In order that the fence shall be locked in the position shown in Figures 4 and 5 (after the cover or concealing member 25 shall hav been unlocked to release the change keys), a dog is pivoted to the bolt 7 and provided at one end with a hook-shaped portion to interlock with a projection 36 on the fence. The other end of the dog 34 (the latter being pivoted between its ends) is adapted to engage the fence 29 and hold the same (against the action of the spring 31) in locked engagement with the notched stud 28 to retain the cover or concealingmember 25 locked to the casing 1.

When the lock shall have been assembled at the factory and ready to be shipped to a customer, the parts will be in the positions shown in Figures 2 and 3 with the change keys concealed within the locked cover or concealing member 25 as shown in Figure 1.

llhen the safe deposit box is to be rented by the bank, an oiiicer or employee of the latter will use a special releasing key 16 which is furnished to the bank only. The bank employee will first set the guard tnmblerswith th use of a guard key as is well understood. He will tl en insert the release key into the plug 5. The release key is made with a projection 37 which, when the key is inserted in the plug 5, will enter the notch in the segmental disk or member As the bank oliicial or employee now turns the key, he will also cause the member 22 to turn and the bolt 7 to be withdrawn. During these simultaneous movenents of the bolt T and member 22, one end of the latter will engage the dog in a manner to release the fence 29, when the spring 31 will swing the fence to the position shown in Figures e and 5, unlocking th change key cover or concealing member 25 and, said dog causing the fence to become locked in the position shown in Figures i and 5, with the portion 30 of said fence withdrawn from the locking stud 28 of the cover or concealing member 25. When the fence 29 has been permitted to swing, its lug 33 will become disposed in the position shown in full lines in Figure 12, and hence the bolt cannot be again withdraw-n except with the use of a change key for setting the tumblers 13.

After the change key shall have been released and delivered to therenter of the box, it will be impossible for anyone, other than the possessor of the change key to operate the lock after the guard tumblers shall have been set; Prior to the releasing of the change key, it has been effectually concealed and its-form and number unknown to every one other than the manufacturer of the lock) including the oiiicials andemployees of the bank or purchasers of the lock, and duplication or obtaining the numbers of change keys, by malicious persons without detection will be effectually prevented.

In case a malicious person attempts to obtain the change key (or its number) of any unrented box and should succeed in releasing the protecting or concealing cover num ber 25 and obtain the key (or its number) or an impression of the'key, the act would be easily detected for the reason that he would be unable to relock the protecting or key concealing cover, and furthermore, the custodian of the bank could'not retract the bolt with the use of his release key. Under such conditions, it would be necessary to remove the lock and return it to the factory for readjustment as the lock cover plate will be permanently secured to the casing by any of the well known methods.

Various changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit of the latter or limiting its scope, and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth.

Having fully described my invention what. I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettors-Patent, is

1. The combination with the casing of a lock, of key concealing means carried by said casing, and means for locking said concealing means.

2. The combination with a lock casing, of removable key concealing means attached to said casing, and means for locking said concealing means to the casing.

8. The combination with a lock casing, and a bolt, of key concealing means carried by said casing, and means carried by the bolt. and cooperable with said concealing means for locking the latter.

4. In a lock, the combination with a casing, a bolt, and tumbler mechanism for controlling the operation of the bolt, of key concealing means carried by said casing, and means for locking said concealing means to the casing.

5. The combination with a lock casing, and a bolt, of a key concealing member mounted on the casing, and a fence carried by the bolt and cooperable with the concealing member to lock the same.

6. The combination with a lock casing and a bolt, of a key concealing member mounted on the casing and having a notched stud enteringthe casing, and a fence carried by the bolt and having a part to cooperate with said notched stud to lock said concealing member to the casing.

7. The combination with a lock casing, and a bolt, of a key concealing member carried by the casing, a fence carried by the bolt and having a part cooperable with said member to lock the same to the casing, and means for locking said fence after it has moved out of locked relation to said concealing members.

8. The combination with a lock casing and a bolt, of a key concealing member carried by the casing, a fence carried by said bolt and having a part cooperable with said concealing means to lock the. same to the casing, and key operated means for unlocking the fence from the concealing member.

9. The combination with a lock casing and a bolt, of a key concealing member carried by the casing, a fence carried by said bolt and having a part cooperable with said concealing member to lock the same to the casing, key operated means for unlocking the fence from the concealing member, and

means whereby said fence will be looked after it has moved away from locked relation to the concealing member.

10. The combination with a lock casing, and a bolt, of a key concealing member carried by said casing, a shifting fence carried by said bolt and having a part cooperable with said concealing member to lock the same to the casing, a spring tending to move the fence out of locked cooperation with the concealing member, a dog carried by the bolt for holding the fence in locked relation to the concealing member, key-operated means for tripping said dog and retracting the bolt, said dog having a part to engage the fence and lock the same after said fence has moved out of locked relation to the concealing member.

11. The combination with a lock casing and a bolt, of key concealing means carried by the casing, a fence carried by the bolt and cooperable with the concealing means to lock the same to the casing, a spring for retracting said fence, keycontrolled means for holding said fence in locked relation to the concealing means, said key-controlled means having a part cooperable with the fence to lock the latter in retracted position.

12. In a lock, the combination with a casing, a bolt having an opening, key operated means for operating said bolt, and slotted key tumblers, of a change-key concealing member carried by the casing, a springretractedfence carried by the bolt and having a part to cooperate with the concealing member to lock the same, key controlled means operable to hold the fence in locked relation to the concealing means, means operable by a key to trip said key-controlled means to permit the fence to move out of locked relation to the concealing member, and a part on said fence movable in the opening in the bolt and adapted to be dis posed out of line with the slots of the tumblers when the fence is in retracted position.

13. In a lock, the combination with a casing, a bolt and key-controlled means for operating the bolt, of a key concealing member carried by the casing, a spring-retracted fence carried by the bolt and having a part cooperable with said concealing member to lock the same to the casing, a dog pivoted to the bolt and cooperable with the fence to hold the latter in locked relation to the concealing member, a revoluble member mounted in the casing and having a notch, a release key having a part to enter said notch, means retaining said revoluble member against accidental movement, said revoluble member having a part cooperable with said dog to trip the same when said revoluble member is turned during retracting of the bolt by the release key, and a part on said dog to interlock with the fence when the latter is in retracted position.
