Be it known that I, SIMON Goo'r'nru a citi' zen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings 6 and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in a Coating Device for Candy-VVrapping Ma:-
chines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same; reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the numerals of ;reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. p p 7 This invention relates to a coating device for candy wrapping machine in which a Wrapper is fed obliquely to aplatform over which a stickof candy passes and in which one margin of the wrapper is moistened in order that it may pick up and adhere to the candy as it passes between the wrapping rolls.
This application is a division of my copendin'gapp'lication, Serial No. 381,458; filed May 1 ith, 1920.
It is ano'bject of this invention to provide a fluid cpntaiiier through which a rotary element projects that moistens one edge or inarginofthe paper feed rolls, and for providing meansfor keeping said element clean and sanitary during its operation.
With these and other objects in View which will become more apparent in the following "description and disclosure in the drawings, this invention comprises the novel mechanism and combinations hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out and defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of this invention and in which similar reference numerals refer to similar features in the different views:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a part of a candy wrapping machine showing the paper feed rolls and fluid container.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary enlarged section through the fluid container illustrating certain features.
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical section through the fluid container and feed rolls showing the supporting frame or bracket in elevation, taken transversely of the rollers.
Figure 4 is a vertical section of the fluid container and feed rolls upon an enlarged scale, taken longitudinally of the rollers. As shown on the drawings: in referring now to the drawings, especially Figure 1, it will be observed that I have illustrated asupporting bracket 1 then over a tensionroll dinounte'dupon one end of a lever 5 pivoted intermediate its ends to the frame and equipped with a paper brake 6 that bears against thereel. From the tension roll 4:, the wrapper paper is passed over a guide roll 7 mounted in .the upper frame member or bracket 1 whichiis pivoted to the lower bracket. From the guide roll 7 the paper passes between the grooved paper feed rolls 8 a11d9 whiclrare more clearly shown in Figures 3 and 4. The roll 8 is journalled in bearing. blocks 10 mounted in guideways or boxes in the bracket 1, while the roll 9isrotatably supported in proper bearings 11 formed in said bracket.
The fluid container 12 is in the form ofa rectangular box or vessel provided with a lug 18 at its rear end for pivotally iattach- 'ing the same to the bracket 1 bye. #pin ib'olt 14. A bearing 15 extends upwardly from the bottom of the fluid container. This bearing extends from. one side :to a point which is spaced a distance from the other side as shown in Figure 4:. A spindle 16 extends through the bearing 15 and has its ends journalled or mounted in recesses in the top of the bearing blocks 10 for supporting the fluid container therebetween and supports intermediate its ends a gear 16 which is driven by a gear 8 on the shaft of roller 8. A narrow rotary moistening element or Wheel 17 is mounted upon the spindle 16 between the bearing 15 and the side walls of the container and extends through a slot 18 in the bottom of the container. This slot is so formed that it will frictionally receive the wheel, allowing the same to rotate but preventing undue leakage therethrough. The parts are so designed that the periphery of the Wheel 1.? will contact the roller 8 at the outer margin 19 which is shown as spaced by a groove 20 from the intermediate roller portion 21.
lhe roller 9 is loosely mounted upon a driving spindle 22 and one face of its hub 22 constitutes one member of a uni-directional clutch. The other member of the clutch consists of spring pressed pins 23 mounted in a head 24: keyed upon the end of the spindle 22; the spindle 22 is adapted to be intermittently driven by a pinion 25 keyed upon the opposite end thereof. An oscillating segment gear or rack 26 operated from the main driving shaft of the machine, imparts intermittent rotation in one direction to the roller 9 through the uni directional clutch. The roller 9 is provided with a gear 9 that meshes with the gear 8, whereby rotation of the lower roll will simultaneously rotate the upper roll.
In order to keep the periphery of the moistening roller 17 clean and free from dirt and accumulations, a scraper 27 extends through an aperture in the lower wall of the container, into contact with the periplr ery of the wheel 17, as shown in Figure 2. The outer end of the scraper is screwthreaded for receiving a head or nut 28 hav ing a groove 29 in which the lower end of a bracket 30 secured to the fluid container extends.
When the machine is in use, water or other suitable fluid is put in the container 12. The fluid will adhere to the periphery of the wheel 17, and as the segment gear 26 is intermittently rotated in the proper direction, the rollers 9 and 8 and moisting element 17 which are intergeared, will be rotated; the latter rolling in contact with the roller 8 and moistening its peripheral margin so that the one margin of. the paper passing between the rolls 8 and 9 will be properly moistened. Stripper bars 31 and 32 positioned with their rear ends in the grooves of the paper feed rolls prevent the paper from winding around the rolls and form a guideway for guiding the paper to the chute or approach over which the sticks of candy are fed to the machine.
I am aware that numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. A device of the kind described comprising a pair of feed rolls, one of said rolls having an annular groove therein, and means for applying liquid to that portion of the last mentioned roll between the groove and the end of the roll.
2. 1-,. device of the kind described comprising a pair of feed rolls, one of said rolls having an annular groove therein, means for applying liquid to that portion of the last mentioned roll between the groove and the end of the roll, and a stripping finger arranged to project within said groove.
3. In a device of the class described, a supporting bracket, a fluid container pivotally supported at one end upon said bracket, a rotary shaft ournalled in the front end of said container and having its ends projecting therebeyond, bearings for supporting the ends of said shaft and a moistening disk cured upon said shaft and projecting through the bottom of the container.
4. In a device of the class described, a pair of web feeding rolls, one of said rolls having a portion separated by a groove from another portion of said roll and means for moistening said first mentioned portion.
5. In a device of the class described, a pair of web feeding rolls, one of said rolls having a portion spaced by a groove from an other portion of said roll, a fluid container, a moistening device projecting through said container and contacting said first mentioned portion, and a scraper cooperating with said moistening device.
