DISPLAY CASE.

Be it hereby known that I, ELKON J osEPH HrRsHovIoI-r, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Portland, in thecounty of Multnomah and State of Oregon, whose post-office address is 21st and Alberta Streets, have invented a new and useful Display Case, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates generally to the dis play of candies, cookies, etc., for sales purposes, and particularly to a device in which a large numberl of different kinds of articles may be displayed without exposing same to dust, moisture, insects, etc., and at the same time make it easily accessible to the salesman.

The first object of this invention is to provide a display case in which a large assortment of cookies can be'displayed in their original cases, and in which any one of these cookies, or similar article, can be reached with one operation.

The second object is to secure complete visibility of all of the boxes in the display cabinet by moving the lowermost box forward.

The third object is to provide a convenient means for raising all of the covers of the individual units simultaneously, and, if desired, holding same in an open position.

The fourth object is to so construct the case that it may be placed in the center of a floor, against the wall, or back to back with other cases of the same kind without unduly occupying floor space. y

The fth object is to so construct the cabinet that at least one of its units can accommodate either whole or half caddies.

The sixth object is to permit the cabinet to be filled from the rear.

The seventh object is to permit the goods to be sold in their original package and not require their transfer from one package to another, and at the same time to make the label or advertising on its package visible from the outside of the cabinet at all times.

The eighth object is to enable the grocer to stand beside the customer who is doing the purchasing and to extract the various items from the cabinet under the customers direction, without necessitating his leaning over the cabinet in order to be certain which item the customer has selected.

Referring in detail to the drawing, this cabinet is constructed on a pair of horizontal base members 10 on which are erected the upright standards 11. Between the pairs of uprightv standards 11 are placed the display units themselves which consist of the side members 12, a front 18 having a glass centerl 14, a rear wall 15, bottom slats 15A, a rear door 16 mounted on the hinges 17 and a top door 18 provided with a glass 19 and mounted on the hinges 20. A knob 21 is also supplied on each of the doors 16.

It will be observed that the lowermost unit contains full size caddies 22 and some half caddies 23 such as are found in the upper sections. Owing to the fact that the full size caddy is twice as high as the small or half size caddy it is found necessary to move the forward edge of the lowermost unit forward ahead of the uppermost units.

Extension hinges 24 on the sides of the lowermost cover 18A bring the centers of the various covers in the same vertical line. Along one edge of the covers 18 and 18A is pivotally attached a rod 25 which passes through the posts 26 which are rotatably attached to the plates 27 which are joined to their respective covers 18 or 18A by means of the screws 28. A set screw 29 is used to hold the rod 25 to each of the posts 26.

At a convenient height there is attached a handle 30 on the rod 25 which is provided with a groove 31 adapted to receive the end of a set screw 32 which will permit the handle 3() to rotate on the rod 25, and at the same time permit the rod 25 to be raised or held by the handle 30.

A bracket 33 is attached to one of the standards 11 and is adapted to act as a rest for the handle 30 when the covers 18 and 18A are in their raised position. It is preferable to provide casters 34 under the bases 10.

While the preferred forms of the various details employed in this device have been illustrated, it is by no means intended that these details need be rigidly adhered` to, as they may be varied to suit the particular requirements of the goods being displayed,'oi` the quality of the cabinet being constructed or in accord with the availability of the material, without departing from the spirit of my invention.

The operation ofthe cabinet isv as follows: When a customer orders, for example, a variety of mixed cookies, the grocer stands by the customers side and raises all of the covers and holds them open by raising the handle 30 on the bracket 33 and picks out the various cakes as they are pointed out by the purchaser, after which thel handle 30 is swung off of the bracket 33 and the covers 18 and 18A are permitted to close.

It is preferable in constructing a cabinet of this type to provide a felt packing between th'e doors and covers and other adjacent parts, both for the purpose of excluding dust and preventing the passage of moisture, as well as excluding insects.

It can readily be seen that whereas the contents of any of the caddies can readily be seen at all times down to the very last cookie, that when one of the caddies becomes empty it is a very simple matter to open the doors 16 or 16A and replace same with a full caddy if desired. Also in the lowermost section Where whole or half Caddies may be employed, if it is not desired to carry a large stock in this section, or open large quantities of cookies, either unopened half caddies or empties may be employed to hold the half caddy above same in position under the glass of the cover 18A.

Attention is drawn to my joint application on a similar'device, dated January 28, 1924, Serial Number 689,069, over which this devicey isv an improvement.

I claim:

A display cabinet having, in combination, a pair of spaced base members; standards mounted on said base members; a plurality of superimposed display units mounted between saidv standards, each oi' said units having'a transparent front; a hinged rear wall; a hinged transparent sloping cover; a rod joining the swinging ends of said cover members; a handle on said rod adapted to swing in ahorizontal plane; and a bracket for supporting said handle in a raised position.
