Description
CL A. WHITLEY SMOKER S DEVICE Filed Nov. 6 1924 INVENTOR BY W ATTORNEY Aug, "iii,
t] hi 53) S T GHARLES A, VJHITLEY, 01* NEW JERS Y.
SIEOKERS DEVICE.
' Application filed November 6,
T all whom it may concern.
Be it known that T, Cr-mnLns A. WHiTLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and Stateot New Jersey,'have inventedycertain new and useful Improvements in Smokers Devices, of which the following is a specification,
This invention relates toimprovements in electric igniting devices by which cigars, cigarettes and smoking pipes'inay be con veniently and quickly lit.
One object of the invention is to provide "an igniting means, operable by any convenient current of electricity by'a push button device controlling the current.
Another purpose is to produce an igniter engaged with a flexible cord so that it can be moved as desired-within its scope of operation, the handle portion being heat insulated aswell as electrically insulated.
A further aimis inthe provision of a device adapted to enter the bowl ota smoking pipe andetiectively set fire to thecontents therein.
These and other aims and objects, such as safety, compactness and low cost of manufacture, are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional view of an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the same.
Figure 3 is an end View thereof.
Figure 4: is a transverse sectional view taken on line 44E of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of certain details of construction.
Figure 6 is a plan view of the heating element prior to assemblage.
Figure 7 is a side view of the same as bent.
Referring more in detail to the drawing the numeral 10 designates in general a metallic casing essentially cylindrical and having a right angled projection 11 at one end, the other end having secured upon it a cap 12 containing an axial opening 13 to receive an insulated electric cable it.
The cable 14: is provided with positive and negative branches 15 and 16, respectively se-- cured by binding screws with terminals 17 and 18 in electrical engagement with conductors 19 and 20 disposed in spaced relasave/1.1a. traces.
tion to extend lengthwise within the easing .10.
These conductors, wl'iich naybe fiatstrips or wires as preferred, are en'ibedded'in aninsulating substance 21 as plaster of Paris with or without ordinary fire sand, this sub stance filling the'casingitromiend to end enceptat the space 22 and extreme outer .end of the lateral projection 11. The conductor 19 extends into. thespace 22 and is bent to present a contact23, ad acent which'is a similar contact 23 formed on the inner end of the conductor 19, alined with the conductor 19.
tact is forced inwardly, thus closing the circuit as will later be seen.
The conductor 19 1s soldered or otherwise secured in electrical engagement with the stem 28 ot=an arcuateuconductor 28, disposed in the extension 11, near its periphery and opposite to this is another arcuate conductor 29, its stem 29 being similarly connected to the conductor 20.
Access is obtained to the rear end of the extension 11 by an opening 30, normally cov ered by a plate 31, this plate being reduced in width and provided with an opening 32 by which the device may be suspended when not in use on any convenient projection.
As a protection from heat the casing 10 is preferably enveloped in a leather or other non-conductor cover 88 disposed over its main portion such as in use would be grasped by the hand of an operator.
The heating element 3% is made of a highly resistant wire, bent to present zig-zag loops and fixed at its ends to the conductor elements 28 and 29.
A series of prongs 35 extend from the eX- treinities of the loops and are embedced in a dielectric substance 36 such as mica held between clamps 37 formed at the lower ends or an anchor 38 firmly secured in the element 1,1, the mica being held by rivets 39 and ventilation is provided by the openings iO.
It is to be understood that the dimensions of the extension or head 11 is such as to enter the bowl of a pipe and it will be seen that the resistance wire 34 may be caused to glow by depressing the button or knob 27, when the apparatus is in proper connection with a current of electrical energy.
Although the foregoing is descriptive of a preferred embodiment of the device, it is to be understood that minor changes in shape, size and proportion may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what i claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
l. An electrical device for igniting purposes comprising a cylindrical casing having a right angled projecting head adapted to enter the bowl or a tobacco smoking pipe, a resistance coil in said head, said coil having a plurality of prongs, means for anchoring said prongs, conductors in said casing in electrical engagement with the ends of said coil, said conductors also engaging with the poles of an electrical current, an insulating substance completely filling said casing in which said conductors are embedded, and a push button to form a circuit through said conductors.
2. An electrical device for igniting purposes comprising a cylindrical casing adapted to be used as a handle having a right angled projecting head to enter a pipe bowl, a resistance coil in said head, said coil having a plurality of prongs, means for anchoring said prongs, conductors in said casing in electrical engagement with the ends of said coil, said conductors also engaging with the poles of an electrical current, means in said casing for insulating said conductors, means for creating electrical contact between said conductors, and a heat insulating cover over said casing.
3. An electrical device for igniting purposes comprising a cylindrical handle having a right angled projecting head of restricted diameter, resistance coil in said head, said coil having a plurality of prongs at the ends of the loops thereof, an anchor lined in said head, dielectric material fixed in said anchor in which said prongs are embedded, means for ventilating said head, a heat insulating covering for said casing, and means for pendantly supporting said casing.
4. An electrical device for igniting purposes comprising a casing having a right angled projecting head adapted to enter the bowl of a tobacco smoking pipe, a resistance coil in the lower open end of said head, said head having openings for the admission of air, a plate at the opposite end 01" said head, said plate having an opening engageable with a support, arcuate conductors in said head to which the opposite ends of said coil are secured, a cap at the opposite end of said casing, a two poled cable passing through said cap, and in engagement with said conductors, a push button for connecting said conveyors, and a non-conducting covering surrounding the handle portion of said casing.
In witness whereof I have a'llixed my signature.
CHARLES A. WVHITLEY.
