ATHLETIC SHOE WITH ANKLE BRACE.

Be it known that I, .loi-IN T. RIDDELL, a citizen of trie United States, and a resident of Evanston, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Athletic Shoes with Ankle Braces, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an athletic shoe with ankle brace, and the main object is to provide such a slice with means for bracing the ankle but which is so arranged as to entirely avoid pinching the instep and will provide complete freedom of action.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention will b-e best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specilication, and in which,

The invention illustrated comprises a shoe of suitable 'size and construction, having fastening means like laces 11, and being provided with cut-out portions or recesses 12 and 13, respectively, at 'the instep and at the rear immediately above the heel of the shoe, to facilitate bending the foot and posi tively preventing any pinching at the instep.

Bracing means is mounted in the shoe and comprises lower means 15 which eH- tends downward from the ankle to the sole and is preferably placed between the lining and the outer leather of the shoe. The lower end of this means or member 15, in the form shown in Fig. 2, is bent inwardly forming a horizontal part or end portion 16 which is preferably placed between the inner sole 17 and the outer 'sole 18 of the sho-e. The bracing means also includes upper means 19 provided with a rounded and preferably slightly di'shed plate 2O positioned at the outside of the ankle and being pivotally and swingably connected by a pin 21 to the upper rounded end 22 of the lower means for limiting the relative swinging or pivotal movement of members 15 and 19, and in assembling the members the top 22 of member 15 is passed between strap 23 and the main part of plate 20.

differs only from the above described form in that the lower means or members 15 are connected by a part 16 extending from side to side between the inner and outer soles of the shoe, in place of the short horizontal portions 16 in the preceding form, said parts 15 and 16 being 'substantially in the shape of a yoke of which member 16 forms the bight portion. The upper means 19 with its strip 23, and the other parts, are identical with the parts described in the preceding form and are similarly numbered.

liVhilc I have illustrated and desc 'ibed the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and inodilications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A shoe having its front and back arranged to form recesses at the instep and behind the ankles, and a brace with a swingable connection positioned between said reces "s, to provide a braced shoe affording ease of fiexure about the ankle.

2. A shoe having braces with parts movably connected at the ankle, and the front and rear portion-s of said shoe having cutout parts adjacent said connection to prevent pinching the instep and to provide freedom of motion therefor.

3. An athletic shoe having portions with cut-out part-s to form a recess at the instep and a recess over the heel, and bracing means including means at each side of the foot beneath the ankle and means pivotally connected thereto at the ankles and extending upwardly therefrom.

An athletic shoe having cut-out portions forming a recess at the instep and a recess at the rear ot' the ankles, bracing means including lower means at each side 0f the toot with means engaging in the sole of the shoe, and means with a rounded plate to engage over the ankle and being pivotally connected to said lower means andextending upwardly therefrom.

5. An athletic shoe having cut-out portions forming recesses at the instep and at the heel, bracing means extending vertically iii-each side of the shoe between the outer leather and the lining thereof, said means comprising a lower part with means bent therefrom and extending along the sole ot' the shoe and an upper part with a rounded dished portion iitting along the ankle and pivotally connected to the upper end of said lower part.

An athletic shoe having cut-out portions forming recesses at the instep and at the heel, bracing means ext-ending vertically in each side of the shoe between the outer leather and the lining` thereof, said means comprising an upper part and a lower part with means bent therefrom and extending along theV sole ot the shoe, and means for limiting the relative pivotal movement of said upper and lower parts.

7. An athletic shoe having cut-out portions forming recesses at the instep and at the heel ot the shoe bracing means mounted between the lining and the outer leather of the shoe and including a lower part with a lower end extending between the inner and outer sole of the shoe, and an upper part with a rounded dished portion fitting' over the ankle and pivotally connected to the upper rounded end of said lower part.

8. An athletic shoe having cut-out portions forming recesses at the instep and at the heel of the shoe, bracing means mounted in the shoe and comprising a yoke-shaped part having its bight mounted along the sole oi` the shoe and its side arms extending upward along the sides of the shoe, and upper parts movably Vconnected with said side arms at the ankles.

9. An athletic shoeloeing cut out at the trent and rear to provide recesses at the instep and immediately above the heel, bracing means mounted in the sides ot said shoe and comprising a yoke shaped part having its bight mounted between an inner and outer sole ot the shoe and having its side arms eX- tending upwardly between the lining and l0. Bracing means of the kind described comprising a yoke-shaped lower member with an arm on each side having upper rounded ends, upper members including narrow bars having rounded dished plates adapted to tit over the ankles and heilig pivoted to the upper rounded ends of said V arms, and a strap cut and bent outward from each plate, said connected arms extending through said straps and thereby limiting the pivotal movement ot said upper members on said yoke-shaped member. i

ll. An athletic shoe including inner and outer soles and side means with lining therein forcovering the ankles, bracing means mounted between the lining and the side means and including lower members extend ing downwardly and then inwardly between the inner and outer soles and having a dished portion at each upper end, upper parts pro vided with dished portions pivotally connected with the first named dished portions, and strap means for limiting the relative swinging movement ot' said parts on said arms. 12J An athletic shoe including a sole and Vside means for covering the ankles, bracing means extending upwardly along said side means of the shoe and comprising a yokeshaped part having its biglit mountedV on said sole ot' the shoe and having its side arms extending upwardly along saidside means and provided with upper rounded ends, up per parts with dished plates engaging over the ankles and being pivotally connected to said rounded ends and extending substantially to the tops ot said shoe, and a strap cut and bentoutward from each dished part and embracing the associated arm which extends therethrough thereby limiting thepivotal movement ot the upper part.
