To all wao/mI t may concern t Be it known that I, Mosns W. Lnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of lBerks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Printing Machines, of which the following is a speciw fication.
My invention relates to mechanism adapted particularly for conveniently hand-printing paper bags or the like as their use is called for in retail business, and itconsists in the specific improvements hereinafter set forth in connection with the accompanying drawings and clearly Vdefined in the subjoined claims.

f Spaced apart vertical frames 5, 5 are fixed to a suitable ybase 6; and are provided about midway of their height with inwardly projecting shelves 7, 7 upon which are fixedly supported an approximately horizontal guide plate for the bags or like material to be printed, said plate being preferably formed in front and rear parts 10 and 10@L which are spaced apart to provide the printing aperture 11 hereinafter referred to. A right-angled gauge plate 12 adjustably fixed to the upper surface of the plate 10 as indicated to enable desired positioning of each bag preliminary to each printing operation.
The printing roll 15, upon the surface of which is fixed a die-plate 15a of required size for the desired printing, is mounted above the aperture 11 of plate 10 with the oppositely projecting ends of its axle 16 mounted in vertical bearing slots 17 of the 'upper portion of the framed uprights 5, 5
so as to permit of vertical movement of the roll relative to the fixed guide plate 10.
The inking roll 20 has the ends of its axle 21 similarly mounted in slot bearings 22 of spaced frame brackets 5a, 5a, and connected to springs 28 which constantly press said roll into contact with the surface of the printing roll 15 whether the latter is in raised or lowered position as hereinafter described. The platen roll 25 has the ends of its axle 26 fixedly mounted in the spaced frames 5, 5 below the plate 10, so that its surface will extend into the plate aperture 11 and support a placed bag; and it is rotated as indicated by a handled crank arm 28. The axles of the printing` roll 15 and platen roll 25 are provided with meshing gear wheels, 8O and 31 respectively, whereby cooperating rotary motion is at all times imparted to the roll 15; the easy passing of the raised die-plate 15a on the'latter with desired print-ing pressure, beingl permitted by a slight raising of the roll in its bearing slots 16 without interfering with the operative meshing of the gears.
I have found that the feeding of the bags between the rolls may be greatly facilitated by properly effecting a determined raising movement of the printing roll 15 when the die-plate 12 threeof is not in printing relation to the platen roll, such raising movementbeing made sufficient to space apart said rolls for the free placing' of a bag without disengaging the cooperating rolls. This I accomplish in a simple manner as indicated, by reducing the depth of certain of the interdental spaces as shown at 30a, so that the passing of the, teeth of the engaging gear will automatically raise the movably mounted roll 15 to permit the plac ing of a bag, without affecting the subsequentcooperative printing action of the rolls when the die-plate 15:L is in printing position.
Proper safe-guarding of the lower roll 25 is readily effected by providing a guardcover extending' between the frames 5, 5; and the two upper rolls are effectively safeguarded by a similar top cover 36, between the frames 5, 5 but provided with a sight opening 37 having a separate hinged cover 38 as indicated, whereby convenient access may be had to said rolls.
It will be readily seen that my improved and simple construction as thus set forth, provides for the free feeding of the bags to the rolls and for uniform printing there-l ofin a very simple and convenient manner.
W'hat I claim is:
1. A printing mechanism for bagsor the like comprising spaced vertical frame members connected by an apertured guide plate, a platen roll fixedly mounted below the ylatter, a printing roll and .spring-pressed inking roll both movably moun'ted above the same, continuously meshing gear wheels on the platen roll and printing roll .shafts respectively, and means .for .automatically raising said printing roll during a determined portion of each revolution thereof `to provide a free material passage-way between the rolls.
2. A printing mechanism for bags or the like comprising spaced vertical frame ymembers connected by an Yapertured guide plate, a platen` roll ixedfly mounted below the latter, `a printing roll and spring-pressed'inking roll both -inovably mounted above the same, continuously meshing gear wheels on the platen roll and printing roll shafts respectively one of which is formed at a vrdetermined portion of its periphery with interdental spacesof reduced depth substantially as for the purpose set forth. y
8. A printing mechanism for bags or the like comprising spaced vertical frame members, connected by an apertured guide plate, a platen roll mounted below the latter, a printing roll and a spring pressed inlcing member mounted above the same, one of vsaid rolls being lmountedvto move toward and away from theother roll, continuously meshinggear wheelslon the 4platen roll and printing roll shafts respectively, one of which is formed .at la determined I.portion of Aits `periphery with interdental spaces of reduced depth substantially as and for the purpose vset forth.
