The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will he understood readily by the description of the drawings and to the claims to be hereinafter given.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, one preferred form thereof is shown in the drawings, this form having` been -found to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and that the invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and or- Iojanization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described, except as required by the scope of the appended claims,

This nut 78 is` cylindrical and is surrounded by the split hub 74 of an arm 75, the outer end of which is connected by a spring 75 to an arm 7GX pivotally mounted on a short shaft 77 adapted to oscillate in a bearingV in an arm 78 pivoted at 79 to the outside of the casing` 88.

This is accomplished by means of the extension 174 bearing upon the upper end of the block 153 at the lower end of the presser foot bar 72.
The action is as followst-'Ihe parts being in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, assume that a piece of work of a certain thickness is introduced beneath the presser foot, the bar 72 will descend thereon under pressure of spring 131, the link will cause the arm 69 to assume a relative position, the hub 68 turning in the nut 73, the latter being held from revolving by the spring 76 acting on the arm 75 of the collar 711, holding the collar stop 113 against the set screw 112 and the collar gripping the nut 73. Thus the presser foot may adjust itself to the thickness of the work without disturbance of or hindrance from the nut 73, and the nut 73 retains its position relative to the boss 173 of lever' 170, because,
in turning, the hub 68 turns equally in thev nut and the boss. When the boss 173 is revolved on the hub by the action of cam 172 it is screwed against the nut, (the latter having been suitably adjusted in proximity to the boss 173) and the boss and nut enter into combined action as lock nuts, thus engaging upon and turning the hub 68. The movement of the hub 68 and consequently the lift given to the presser foot from the work is thus the same whatever the thickness of the work, and the presser foot is free to adjust itself automatically to the thickness of the work. rI`he part 10:4-, being lifted when the presser foot bar rises, puts extra tension on the spring 76 which assists in maintaining the nut 73 and boss 173 locked together as the arm 69 rises to lift the presser bar. Since the work feed is carried by the presser foot it also takes such position as corresponds to the thickness of the work.
lll-then the lever 170 returns to its normal position, it will remove the hub 173 thereof from contact with the nut 73 and permit it to return to its normal position.
It will be noted that the block 153 on the lower end of the presser foot bar carries with it the work feeding member 156 which is provided with means whereby it may be moved about a fulcrum pin 158 extending transversely of said block 153 and whereby it may also be moved lengthwise of the presser foot bar 72.
It will be further noted that said block 153 also has mounted thereon the plates 1611 provided with cam slots 165 which control the movement of the work feeding member 156 when actuated by the oscillating lever 83 through the medium of the link 167.
The work feeding point 157 in the lower end of the work feeding member 156 is normally retained in the position indicated in Fig. 5 by the spring 159, in which position the presser foot 162 is permitted to act upon the work while the work feeding point 157 is removed from contact with said work.
The construction of presser foot mechanism herein shown and described is very effective in operation..
It is believed that the operation and many advantages of the invention will be understood readily without further description.`
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a machine of the class described a presser foot bar, a revoluble cam; a fixed stud; an exteriorly threaded hub loosely mounted on said stud and having a radial arm linked to the presser foot bar; a cylindrical nut on said threaded hub; and a lever actuated by said cam and threaded on said hub for causing it to be brought into frictional contact with said nut to rotate the hub.
2. In a` machine of the class described a presser foot bar, a revoluble cam; a fixed stud; an exteriorly threaded hub loosely mounted on said stud and having a radial arm linked to the presser foot bar; a cylindrical nut on said threaded hub; a lever actuated by said cam and threaded on said hub for causing it to be brought into frictional contact with said nut to rotate the hub; and a spring controlling the movement of said arm. i

In a machine of the class described, a presser foot bar; a revoluble cam; a. iXed stud; an exteriorly threaded hub loosely mounted on said stud and having a radial arm linked to the presser foot bar; a cylindrical nut on said threaded hub; a friction collar on said cylindrical nut; a lever actuated by said cam and threaded on said hub for causing it to be brought into frictional contact with said nut to rotate the hub; and means for controlling the friction between said collar and nut. In a machine of the class described, a presser foot bar; a revoluble cam; a fixed stud; an exteriorly threaded hub loosely mounted on said stud and having a radial arm linked to the presser foot bar; a cylindrical nut on said threaded hub; a friction collar on said cylindrical nut provided with a radial arm; a lever actuated by said cam and threaded on said hub for causing it to be brought into frictional contact with said nut to rotate the hub; a block near the lower end of the presser foot bar; an oscillating member the end of which rests on said presser foot block; and a spring between the arm of the friction collar and said oscillating member.

In a machine of the class described a presser foot bar, afrcvoluble cam; a fixed stud; an exteriorly threaded hub loosely mounted yon said stud and having radial arm linked to the presser foot bar, said bar having a groove in its lower end; a cylindrical nut on said threaded hub; a lever actuated by said cam and threaded on said hub for causing it to be brought into frictional contact with said nut to rotate the hub; a work feeding member in said groove; a fulcrum therefor; and means for moving said work feeding member about its fulcrum.
6.v lln a machine of the class described a presser foot lar, a revoluble cam; a fixed stud; an exteriorly threaded hub loosely mounted on said stud and having a radial arm linked to' the presser foot bar, said bar having a groove in its lower end; a cylindrical nut on said threaded hub; a lever actuatedby said cam and threaded on said hub for causing it to be brought into frictional contact-with said nut to rotate the hub; a work feeding member in said groove; a fulcrum therefor; and means for controlling the movement of said work feedingl member about its fulcruin as well as for moving it endwise of said bar.
7. ln a machine of the class described a presser footbar, a revoluble cam; a fixed stud an exteriorly threaded hub loosely mounted on said stud and having a radial arm linked to the presser foot bar, said bar having a groove in its lower end; a cylindrical nut on said threaded hub; a lever actuated by said cam and threaded on said hub for causing it to be brought into frictional contact with said nut to rotate the hub; a work feeding member in said groove; a fulcrum therefor; a plate carried by said presser foot bar having a cam slot coacting with a projection on the work feeding member to control the movement of said work feeding member about its fulcrum and endwise of said bar.
8. ln a machine of the class described a presser foot bar, a revoluble cam; a fixed stud; an exteriorly threaded hub loosely mounted on said stud and having a radial arm linked to the presser foot bar, said bar having a groove extending longitudinally of its lower end; a. cylindrical nut on said threaded hub; a lever actuated by said cam and threaded on said hub for causing it to be brought into frictional contact with said nut to rotate the hub; a pin extending transversely of said groove; a work feeding member having a forked upper end in said groove and straddling said pin; means for moving said work feeding member about the axis of said pin; and means carried by the presser foot for controllin0- the movement of said work feeding member about said pin and endwise of said groove.

In a machine of the class described a presser foot bar, a revoluble cam; a lined stud; an exterior-ly threaded hub loosely mounted on said stud and having a radial arm linked to the presser foot bar; a cylindrical nut on said threaded hub; a lever actuated by said cam and threaded on said hub for causing it to be brought into frictional contact with said nut to rotate the hub; a block near the lower end of said presser foot bar; a two part oscillating member, the end of which rests on said presser foot blo-c5; and means for adjusting the two parts of said oscillating member relatively to each other.
lO. ln a machine of the class described a presser foot bar, a revoluble cam; a lined stud; an crlteriorly threaded hub loosely mounted on said stud and having a radial arm linked to the presser foot bar; a cylindrical nut on said threaded hub; a lever actuated by said cam and threaded on said hub for causing it to be brought into frictional contact with said nut to rotate the hub; a block near the lower end of said presser foot bar; a short os -illating shaft, a member secured thereto and oscillating therewith, the end of which rests on said presser foot block; a lever loosely mounted on said short shaft and having two arms; a spring between one arm and the arm on said collar; and an adjustable member in the other arm bearing against a lug on said scillating member.

link between said arm and collar; a cylindrical nut threaded to said hub; a cam lever having a boss threaded to said hub and adapted to be moved into frictional contact with said nut; a friction collar surrounding said nut and i aving an arm extending therefrom; means for regulating the friction between said collar and nut; a block on the lower end of said presser foot bar; a twopart oscillating member, the end of which rests on said presser foot block; a spring between said arm and oscillating member; and means for adjusting the tivo parts of said oscillating member relatively to cach other. i

In a n'nufhine of the class described, a revoluble Cain; a lixedstud; a threaded hub loosely mounted thereon and having a radial arm; a prisser foot bar; a collar thereon; a link between said arm and collar; a cylindrical nut threaded to said hub; a cam lever having a boss threaded to said hub and adapted to be moved into frictional contact with said nut; a friction collar surrounding said nut and havin an arm extending therefrom; means for regulating the friction between said collar aud nut; a block on the lower end of said presser foot bar; a short lou oscillating shaft; a member secured thereto and oscillating therewith, the endV of which rests on said presser foot block; a lever loosely mounted on said short shaft and having` two arms; a spring between one arm and the arm on said collar; and an adjustable member in the other arm bearing against a lug on said oscillating member.
13. In a machine of the class described, a revoluble cam; a fixed stud; a threaded hub loosely mounted thereon and having a radial arm; a presser foot bar; a collar thereon; a link between said arm and collar; a cylindrical nut threaded to said hub; a cam lever having a boss threaded to said hub and adapted to be moved into frictional Contact with said nut; a friction collar surrounding said nut and having an arm extending therefrom; means for regulating the friction between said collar and nut; a block on the lower end of said presser foot bar; a short oscillating shaft; a movable member Carrying said short shaft; a member secured to said short shaft and oscillating therewith, the end of which rests on said presser foot block; a lever loosely mounted on said short shaft and having two arms; a spring be* tween one arm and the arm on said collar; and an adjustable member in the other arm bearing against a lug on said oscillating member.
