IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINERY FOR WASHING, BLEACHING. AND DYEING SKINS.

My invention relatesrtoa drum formed, as to its periphery, of bars, which areV-shaped on theinside to scrape the skins and open the pores, and attached at their ends to the heads of the drums, which have similar V-shaped bars on the inside for the same purpose. The

drum has a door at the side for putting the skins into it and taking them out, and is provlded with gear to swing it up out of the tank and over one edge of it to dump the skins out into a cart to save the labor of taking them out by hand when they are to be removed.

Pipes are attached to introduce steam and water to the bottom of the tank to regulate the temperature.

The machine is to be used in the several processes of tanning and dressing such skins as calf, sheep, deer, goat, seal, and all kinds of light skins and hides, known as washing, liming, tanning, raising, aluming, and softening with water, lime-liquor or pure drench, tan-liquor, alum, soft liquor or sumac, or any of the liquors used .in tanning or dressing leather. It is also useful for bleaching and dyeing of cloths.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the tank, and side elevation of the drum and some of the gear for hoisting the drum out of the tank. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3, is an end elevation, showing the drum in the working position. Fig. 4.- is an end elevation, showing the drum hoisted up for dumping out the skins; and Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the drum.

A represents the semicircular tank for holding the liquor. B is the hollow drum, in which the skins are placed and revolved in the liquor in tank A. The heads 0 of the tank have each a short shaft, D, attached to the outside center and resting on bearings E in the ends F of the tank. One shaft gears by a wheel, G, with a pinion, H, on a countershaft, on which the driving-pulley I is mounted, by which the power for revolving the drum is applied. Both the shafts have a chainpulley, J, and a pinion, K, mounted loosely on them, but connected together. The pinions gear with a standing segmental wheel,

L, attached to the tank ends. The chain- I and the pinions K gearing with the said segmental wheels. The pinions K and the pulleys I, being loose on the shaft, remain at rest while the drum is running. Wheel G drops into gear with the center shaft when the drum is let down again.

The drum has a door, R, in the side which being opened and turned to the right position when the drum is raised the contents of the drum will run out into a cart or other receptacle below. S represents the parallel bars of which the cylindrical portion of the shell of the drum is composed. They are let .into notches in the heads 0 flush with the surface, and fastened in any approved way, and

they are A-shaped on the inside, as shown in Fig. 5, for scraping the skins and opening the pores more efficiently than they would if made flat. T represents similar triangular ribs on the heads, also, for thoroughly scraping the skins as they tumble about when the drum revolves. U and V represent the pipes for admitting water and steam for regulating the temperature of the liquors. They will be connected with the requisite sources of supply.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The drum or cylinder B, having longitudinal, peripheral V-shaped bars S, and correspondingly-shaped ribs '1 attached to the heads interiorly, as and for the purpose specified.

2. The combination of the drum-shaft, having pinions, as specified, the endless chain M and its pulleys, with the stationary segmental rack-bars L, and tank A,'as shown and described, to operate as specified.
