The same'movement lof thelever s whereby' the awl is withdrawn and theA sprin g-plun ger forced down turns'the nail-box p, and with it the delivering-arms q,` so that by the extremities kof said' arms a nail is placed immediately over the perforation which has been made in the lifts in the forming-die m. This takes place at a time when the movable frame B is so elevated. bythe op erations of the machine that the pressureblock z is at the farthest remove from the die m. Then, by the further operations of the lnachine, the movable frame commencesV to descend. When' the" movableframe has approached suiiiciently near the die m to have forced the uniting-nail a portion of its length into the perforation-in the lifts in the die, the delivering-arms q are turned away and out from under the descending pressure-block, a, leaving the nail partially inserted into the lifts, and to be driven completely through the same when the pressure-block z has descended so as to be in contact with the die m.' The means by which the above operation is accomplished are as follows: Upon the rear end of the rod o is shown the catch or shoulder y. Connected with the nail-box p is seen the vertical rod l. Around this rod is wound the spiral spring m. The rod is held in proper supports n. The nail-box is so connected with the rod l as to turn with it. Rigidly attached to the bottom of the rod l is the curved arm p. Now, as the rod v is thrown backward by the forward movement of the lever s, the catch y strikes the curved arm p', thus turning the vertical rod l', and with it thenail-boxp. Thus the delivering-arms Iq,j'being connected with the nail-box, are so swung that their lower extremities k are swung under the pressure-block z, as before described. When the 'downward motion of the'traveling frame B begins, the curved arm p is held on the catch or shoulder y. The descent of the frame brings the curved arm in contact with the top end of the standard o', and is 'thereby thrown off from the catch y. Thereupon the spiral spring m' operates to turn the nail-box, and so swing the delivering-arms q out from under the descending pressure-block z. The bottom of the nail-box is provided with slots q', in which the nails being placed, and the box being in an inclined position, and being somewhat agitated by the rack r and the arm s as the traveling frame rises and falls, they are directed into the space between the deliveringarms q. In this space they descend until they strike the spring-stop t. When the delivering-arms are moved so that their extremities k pass under the pressure-block, the springstop t strikes the catch By this contact 'the disk u is so rotated, by means of the curved arm c', that the nail which rests in the recess lw' is released, and allowed to slide downward in the space between the two arms until it reaches their extremities, where it is stopped. Thus as fast as the arms deliver a nail under the pressure-block z, they are supplied with another, the disk u', by means of a y spiral or other spring wound around a stock, returning to such position that therecess w is prepared `tojreceive anotherl nail. When' the lever sis thrown forward, as ,before described, it moves the slide t, which has on its rear end the shoulder x1, which catches `the I upper end of the vertical arm y', pivoted'at z,"
and having the catch x2. As the movable frame descends, the catch m2 unites with theJ catch lon-the upper end of a rod rising from the weighted arm k. When the movable frame has completedthe downwardr movement and begins to rise,` it therefore lifts with it the weighted arm k. At the opposite extremity o'f this arm is the vertical rod a2, the top of which forms the plunger b2 in the bottom of the die m. Thus, as the weighted arm is lifted by the rising of the traveling frame B, the plungerA b2 pushes up out of the die m the several lifts fastened together by the uniting-nail. When the plunger b2 has been sufciently raised to throwthe united lifts out of the die m, the catch Z strikes the stop o, by the inclined face of whichl it is released from the catch x2, and then the weighted arm k, with the plunger in the die m, drops so that the top of the plunger is even with the bottom of the die m. When the lever s is tipped back, the vertical arm y is drawn to one side by means of the spring a, vso that it will not matchwith the catch rising from the weighted arm. The die m, as Well as the pressure-block z, are removable, so that varieties of sizes may be employed. The delivering-arms g, where they are thrown back,
as described, and out from under the pressureblock, move over an arm or guide, c2, by which the nail is carried to a recess at their extremity, in readiness for insertion into the lifts in the die, as before described. f
The operations of my machine are as and in the order following: The leather, being placed upon the forming-die m, is cut into the requisite form by the descent of the traveling frame, moved by the eccentric, as before described. When the die is full of the cut lifts the awl is placed in position to perforate the same by the backward movement of the lever s, or the awl may be so placed as to perforate each lift as it is out. When the die is lled with the lifts another forward motion of the lever s swings the delivering-arms into such position as to present a uniting-nail for insertion into the perforation of the lifts. The de` scent of the traveling frame to force in the nail brings the curved arm p in contact with the standard o', and thus allows the delivering-arms to ily back to their original position. After the nail is fully inserted, the traveling frame, as it rises, lifts the weighted arm, which, by means of the plunger, throws out 'the united lifts from the die. The weighted arm is then released and drops back to its original position. The table upon which the die m is placed is made adjustable, as is also the stop o. v
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
