citizen of the United States, and a resident Ving means which is aflixed to theforms in such manner thatV a part will be embedded in the concrete when poured and a part will project sufliciently to provide for attachment Vor by making holes in the concrete and introducing expansion bolts into the holes.
One methodr of (providing yattachment which affords certain advantages is to insert nails with or without'anchorlng devicesl 1n such position that when the concrete is poured the head of the nail willl be embedded in the concrete and-the point 'will project to j l top, which the head 8 of the tie member 1s be bent over the lath or other attached facing for Securing the same. If the nails are driven into the forms a suflicient distance to afford the necessary projection when 4the forms are removed, the removal 'of the 5 forms is rendered diflicult and the forms are likely to'bey split during removaLf If, as is frequently done, holesl `are d'rilled to receive the nails, the work of drilling the 'holes involves considerable labor and expense.
The present invention provides a device which can be easily applied to forms and one permitting easy removal of the forms when the concrete has set. H V
The invention will be best undferstood from a description of an illustrativeembod'iment thereof, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of a concrete structure 'showing' a fasteningdevice embodying the principles of the invention in the position Vin which it is held during theJ pouring of the concrete.

- The device shown for the purposes of illusfirating the invention has an attachment socket 5 adapted to be embedded in the concrete and designedI toV afford support fora tie member 6, to which the lath ,or other attached parts may be secured. By this arrangement'the tie member may be inserted into the form a' suflicient distance to provide a support for the'socket member onthe form during the pouring of the concrete without, however, providing such secure attachment as would prevent the easy removal of the forms from the concrete when set. The socket member or-insert and the tie member are so constructed that the concrete, when poured will not form a lock to prevent pulling out of the tie member to its outermcst operative position. As shown, the socket member has an opening 7 at the adapted to close, thereby bpreven-ting concrete entering the socket member. The lower opening throughV which the attaching end of' the tie member projects is restricted to prevent the-'passingy of the head, thereby 'providing means for .limiting the downward A nail somewhat longer than the socket member may form a cheap and effective tie member and one which may easily be obtained, leaving' only the socket member to be specially manufactured.
The socket member shown may be cheaply manufactured by forming it of a wire coil shaped to present an upper preferably cylindricalportion- 10` of a size such that the head of the nail will sufficiently close its upper end to prevent the concrete flowing into the socket member, and a lower preferably cylindrical portion 11 of such length as to hold the head of the nail a sufiicient distance into the concrete in itsv final position.- The portion 12 connecting the. larger upper section and the lower smaller section maybe tapered as'ShOWn to permit the head of the nail to, in a measure, wedge therein, an action which is facilitated by the coil structure. The tapered section also forms lock in the concrete at a point adjacent the head of the nail where it is most needed and at a sufficient distance from the surface of the concrete. The lower section of the socket member serves also to increase the lateral bearing area adj acent the surface of the concrete as compared with an arrangement in which the bare nail engaged the concrete so that when the nail is bentlaterally in securing a facing thereto there is less likelihood of the concrete being chipped. The lower section is preferably of Substantial length for the reason also that it is desirable to hold the upper end of the nail rigid while bending the lower end about a facing to be secured.
In use the nail is inserted through the socket member and driven into the form to secure both the nail and socket member in the position which it is to take in the concrete. The socket member forms a stop to determine the distance which the nail is driven into the form. Then the concrete is set, the forms are pulled off. The grip of the forms on the nails is suflicient to draw them outward to their outermost position. If, for any reason, a nail fails to draw out, it can later be pulled out by means of a hammer or other suitable tool. The lath is then applied and the nail is bent laterally around a portion of the lath. There is a tendency for the head of the nail to be wedged between two portions of wire by the action of bending the nail. Ordinarily the joint between the head of the nail or other tie member and the upper edge of the socket member is tight enough to prevent any inflow of the concrete mixture, making it unnecessary to provide an eifective closure.
The words upper and lower refer to the relative position of parts in the drawing, which illustrates a ceiling lath secured to overhead concrete, the words being used merely for convenience of description and not as words of limitation.
Various possible embodiments may be made of the invention and various changes in the embodiment described may be made, all within the scope` of the subjoined claims.
VVhat I claim is:
1. As an article of manufacture, an insert for concrete construction adapted to be embedded within the concrete consisting of a closely-Wound wire spiral formed to present an upper section of relatively large diameter and a lower section of relatively small diameter.
2. As an article of manufacture, an insert for concrete construction adapted to be embedded within the concrete consisting of a closely wound wire spiral formed to present an upper section of relatively large diameter, a lower section of relatively small diameter, and an intermediate tapered section.
3. An attaching device for concrete construction comprising a socket having an opening at the top and a tubular portion at the bottom, together with a tie member adapted to afford attachment vertically movable in said socket, said tie member being arranged when in its upper position to close the opening at the top and to project at the bottom a sufficient distance to permit Securing to a`form, and when in its lower position to project a greater distance to afford attachment for an article.
4. An attaching device for concrete construction comprising a socket having an opening at the top and a tubular portion at the bottom, together with aV tie member vertieally movable in said socket, having a head larger than the interior of said bottom tubular portion arranged when in its upper position to close the opening at the top of the socket. i
5. As an article of manufacture, an attachment for concrete construction comprising a socket member having a restricted opening at its lower end, a tie member vertically movable through said restricted opening and having an integral head within the socket member larger than said restricted opening.
6. An attachment for concrete construction comprising a socket member having a tubular shank at its lower end, a tie member vertically movable through said shank and having a head larger than the opening bore of said shank, whereby downward movement of the tie member is limited, the lower end of said tie member when in its uppermost position projecting from the lower end of the socket a suificient distance to permit it to be secured to a form.
7. An attaching device for concrete construction comprising a tie member having a head, a tubular member shorter than said tie member in which the tie member is longitudinally movable, having a larger upper portion with an opening at the top of substantially the size of the head of the tie member and a lower portion smaller than the head and an intermediate tapered portion in which the head wedges.
8. An attaching device for concrete construction comprising a tie member, lnwing a head, a tubular member shorter than said tie member in which the tie member is longitudinal movable, having a larger upper portion with an opening at the top of substantially the size of the head of the tie member, a lower portion smaller than the head, and an intermediate tapered portion in which the head is adapted to wedge.
9. An attaching device for concrete construction comprising a tie member having a head, a tubular member shorter than said tie member in Which the tie member is longitudinally movable adapted to bel substantially closed by the head of the tie member and a lower port-ion having a bore smaller than the head to limit the downward movement of the tie member.
10. An attaching device for concrete construction comprising atie member, a tnbular member in Which the tie member is longitudinally movable having a. Alarger npper portion with an opening at the* top, the top of the tie member being of a shape and size to substantially close the opening at the top of the tnbular member When the tie member is in its npper position, and the tubular member being formed to provide means to limit the downward movement of the tie member.
11. An attaching device for concrete construction comprising a tie member having a head and shank, a tubular member consisting of a closely-wound wire spiral in which the tie member is longitudinally movable, having a larger upper portio-n to receive the head and a smaller lower portion forming a retaining means for the tie member.
12. An attaching device for concrete construction comprising a nail, a tnbular member shorter than said nail open at both ends, in which member the nail is longitudinally movable, the upper open end being of a size to be substantially closed by the nail head,
the tnbnlar member being formed to provide means for limiting the downward movement of the nail.
13. An attachment socket for concrete construction of tubular form open at both ends, having a larger npper cylindrical portion adapted to receive and substantially fit the head of a nail inserted therein, and a smaller lower cylindrical portion coaxial therewith adapted to receive the shank of the nail.

An attachment socket for concrete construction of tubular form open at both ends, having a larger upper cylindrical portion adapted to receive and substantially fit the head of the nail, and a smaller lower portion adapted to engage the head of the nail to form a stop preventing withdrawal of the nail therethrongh, the distance from the upper end to the lower end being somewhat less than the length of the nail.
15. An attaching device for concrete construction comprising a casing, a tie member 'the possible relative movement being such that When the tie member is in its relatively retracted position, its projectmg end may be inserted in a form to provide a support forv holding the casing in predetermined position relative to the tie member and the form while the concrete'is being poured therearound, said tie member being longitudinally movable in the casing in such manner that after the hardening of the concrete and removal of the form, the tie member can be withdrawn to project a greater distance from the casing to afford attachment for Securing facings.
17. An attaching device for concrete construction comprising a casing, a tie member having a limited longitudinal movement Within the casing to project a relatively short distance therefrom or a relatively greater distance therefrom, the interengaging parts of the casing and tie member being so formed that when said tie member is positioned to project a relatively short distance from the casing its projecting end may be inserted in a form to hold the casing in predetermined relation'to the form during the pouring of concrete therearound and When, after setting of the concrete and removal of the form, the tie member may be pulled out to project a greater distance from the casing to afford attachment.
18. An attaching device for concrete construction comprising a casing having an opening at the bottom, and a tie member of a length greater than that of the casing and longitudinally movable therein having an integral head larger than the opening, the casing and tie member having opposed shoulders to limit the outward movement of the tie member, the lengths of the tie member and casing and the relative movement being such that when the tie member is in relatively retracted position it projects a relatively short distance from the casing and the interengaging portions of the tie member and casing being so shaped that the casing is held laterally in relatively fixed position relative to the 'tie member.
19. An attachingdevice for concrete construction comprising a casing having an opening at the bottom, and a tie member havan integral head larger than the opening, and having a limited longitudinal movement Within the casing to project a.relatively short distance therefrom or a relatively greater distance therefrom, the interengaging parts of the casing and tie member being so formed that when said tie member is positioned to project a relatively short distance from the casing the casing and tie `member are held in relatively fixed position laterally With respect to each other, Whereby When the projecting end is supported in fixed position the tie member is also held in 5 substantially fixed position.
20. An attaching device for concrete construction comprising a casing having an opening at the bottom and a tie member having an integral head Within the casing larger 10 than the opening7 said tie member being movable vertically Within the casing and its head so fitting the casing and its shank so fitting the opening that When the tie mem ber is in its uppermost position the casing and tie member are held in relatively fixed position laterally With respect to each other, Whereby When the projecting end is supported in Xed position the tie member is held thereby in substantially iixed position.
