Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NICHOLAS A. DAVIS, OF RUSK, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR DESTROYING COTTON-WORMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 154,651, dated September 1, 1874; application filed June 1, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS A. DAVIS, of Rusk, Cherokee county, Texas, have invented a new and useful Machine for the Distribution of Poison for the Destruction of the Cotton- Worm, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification,in whic Figure 1 represents my invention attached to-a cart. Fig. 2 is a cross section through the line y y.
My invention relates to the distribution of poison intended to destroy the cotton-worm in the field; and it consists in the combination of devices hereinafter explained.
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
In the drawings, A represents an ordinary farmcart, across the rear end of which is secured the horizontal shaft B, having its bearin gs in the arms 0 c, projecting behind the cart. On the shaft B I place two or more looselyrevolving perforated cylinders, E, bein g revolved upon the shaft, which carries a pulley, a, over which a band or cord works, passing to the hub of the cart-wheel, from which it receives motion, and thus causes the shaft B to revolve when the cart is in motion, and the shaft, carrying the perforated cylinders, previously filled with the powdered poison, causes the poison to be sifted outand distributed over the cotton-plants. Attached to the inner end of each of the outside cylinders is a spiral spring, b, coiled around the shaft A, and so arranged as to secure an easy, gentle, lateral motion to thecylinders in case of a sudden jar given the machine, and thus prevent too great a discharge of the poison at any one point.
It is evident that a similar spring may be used at the opposite end of the cylinders, so as to check the jar in both directions.
From the above description of my invention, it is evident that it could be affixed to any kind of frame moving on wheels, and by a hand-crank and ordinary cog-gearing be successfully worked; I therefore do not confine myself to the mode herein described for operating my device, as the same may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
.I do not claim, broadly, the use of the revolving cylinders arranged on a shaft, as this is old; but
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The shaft A. cylinder E, and. pulley a, in combination with the springs b, all constructed to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
NICHOLAS A. DAVIS.
