Application filed December 19, 1523. Serial No. 681,563.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK P. MEIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, in the county of New Hanover and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Stoves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. i
This invention relates t certain improve ments in stoves and has relation more particularly to a stove especially designed and adapted for use in connection with fire places and it is an object of the invention to provide novel and improved means whereby the chimney or draft-flue of the fire-place may be closed. a
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved draft closure or flue stopper which may be readily adjustedin order to be used in connection with fire-places of various sizes and which draft closure or stopper-is separable from the stove proper yet is provided with means for coaction with the stove to'constantly urge the draft closure or fine stopper upwardly in firm contact with the wallsof the fire-place.
It is also an object of the invention to provide in connection with a stove novel and improved means whereby a border frame may be adjustably connected therewith and in a manner to facilitate the proper setting of the stove and-also to close or cover the space across thetop of the stove and downwardly on each side thereof.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved stove whereby certain important ad vantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
, In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating a stove constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position;
Figure 2 is ahorizontal sectional View taken through the upper portion of the structure as illustrated in Figure 1; 1
Figure 3 is a. vertical sectional View taken through the structure illustrated in Figure 1 with the stove proper in elevation;
Figure a is a view in plan of the plates comprised in the draft closure or fine stopper, the plates being separated,
Figure 5 is a view in plan of the collar associated with the draft closure or flue" waste products of combustion up the chim-.
ney flue O. i
As is particularly illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, the stove S seats-directly upon the hearth and its rear portion is disposed on a downward and inwardineline which isof particular advantage in assuring that the fuel, such as wood or the like within the stove, will be disposed toward the front portion of the stove resultingln a greater efli ciency in heat radiation with n the room.
The lower portion of the stove S. preferably at thesfront, is provided with the draft oper ings 1 and also with the clean-out door I);
The upper portion of the front wall of the stove together with the adjacentportion of the-top of the stove has associated therewith a fuel ,door A, said door being such to provide, when opened, a materially large opening so that wood or kindred fuel to be burned may be readily applied within the stove.
In order to force the heat that radiates from the stove S into the roomand keep the air in requisite circulation it is necessary to close or stop the chimney flue C and as herein disclosed, I employ the flue stopper or closure member M. This member M comprises two plates 2 of requisite dimensions to be snugly engaged within the upper portion of the fire-place and which have the adjacent marginal portions in overlying relation, with said marginal portions provided with the recesses or cut out portions 3 which, when the plates are assembled provide suitable openings through which projects the pipe P. The overlying portions of one of the plates 2 is provided fore and aft with the slots 4 through which extend the bolts 5 carried by the overlying portion of the second plate, said bolts 5 having associated therewith the wing nuts 6 or the like. The bolts 5 and the slots 4 provide means whereby the flue stopper or closure member M may be readily and conveniently adjusted in order to snugly fit within the upper por tion of the fire-place while the nuts 6 serve to maintain the plates 2 in desired adjusted position.
Before the flue stopper or member M is applied a washer W is disposed around the pipe Pwith its inner margin in close contact therewith, said washer being of sum di mensions as. to' assure a'closure of the recesses 3 irrespective of the relative a djustments of the plates 2.
As herein disclosed, the washer V5 is provided with the spring members 7 which contact with the adjacent portion of the stove S whereby the washer and the applied flue stopper or closure member M are constantly urged upwardly to assuresaid member M having. effective position within the upper portion of the lire-place.
When it is desired to remove the siove ti, the member M or washer W may be entirely removed thereby as it is to be noted'no portion of the member M is secured or attached to the stove.
In order to regulate the extent of insertion of the stove S within the fire-place F I provide each side ofthe stove with the plate 8; This plate 8 is provide-d with a longitudinally disposed slot 9- through which projects a bolt 10 carried by the ad jacent side wall of the stove and threaded upon said bolt 10 is a wing nut 11. By this means the plate 8 is held in a desired adjustedposition intermediate the forwardends of the stove. The forward end of each of the-plates 8 is provided with a pair of outstanding lugs 12 between which are adapted to beengagedthe inner marginal portions of the vertical members 14: of the border frame B.
When the stove S is applied, the frame 13 is in close contact with the portions of the wall X defining the open front of the lire place and thereby bridges the spaces at the top and sides of the stove in addition to regulating the position of the stove with respect to the fire-place F. The lower portion of the vertical members 14 of the border frame B are provided with the openings 15 for the admission of cold air while the upper or horizontal portion 16 is provided with the openings 17 for the return to the room of the heated air.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a stove constructed in accordance with my invention is par ticularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim l. A fire-place stove having a smoke pipe, a flue stopper for closing the chimney above the stove said stopper being freely engaged with the smoke pipe and free'of connection with the stove, and positive means for urging saidflue stopper upwardly of the pipe in contact with thewalls of the chimney and the upper wall of the fire-place.
2. A fire-place stove havinga smoke pipe, a' flue stopper for closing' thechimney above the stove, said stopper being freely engaged with the smoke pipe and-free of connection with the stove, and positive means coacting with the-flue stopper and the stove for urging said flue stopper upwardly of the pipe in contact with the walls of the chimney and the upper wall of the fire-place.
In testimony whereof I'hereunto my signature. a
FRANK. P. MEIER.
