Be it known that I, JOHN L. KAsMAUsvKAS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mattapan, in the county of Suf-v folk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hypodermic Syringes, of which the following is a specification.
'My invention relates to hypode-rmie syringes and more especially' to syringes of the type employed by dentists.
'Ihe principal objects of my invention are to provide a hypodermic syringe in which a medicine capsule may readily be inserted and from which it may conveniently be removed, and by means of which the stopper of the capsule will automatically be punctured by the act of securing said capsule in its holder.
In the drawings which accompany and form a part of this speciicationp Figure 1 is a side view of a hypodermic syringe embodying my invention, the capsule holder being shown in closed position;

In the particular drawings selected' for more fully disclosing my invention 10 is a semi-cylindrical shell provided at its outer end with a disc 11 having a central bore 12, said disc constituting a capsule stop member, and provided at its inner end with a cylindrical head 13, said head and stop member preferably being formed integral with said shell.
Disposed concentrically about the shell 10 is a second semi-cylindrical `shell 14 provided at the needle end of the syringe with a cylindrical portion 15 surrounding the capsule stop 11 and at its other end with a cylindrical portion 16 surrounding the head l3\ l The two shells constitute a capsule holder and are relatively movable longitudinally and rotatively.
lVhile various means may be employed for governing the relative movement of the two shells, I prefer, as shown in the present instance., to effect this result by means of the pin 17 projecting from the head 13 and co-operating with the cam-slot 18 cut ,into the sleeve or cylindrical end portion 16, said slot being so shaped that by giving the outer shell a half t'urn, the said outer shell will slide. rearwardly along the inner shell and form therewith a cylinder for enclosing the capsule, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, thel said cylinder preferably being not quite closed so that there will be two longitudinally-extending diametrically opposed slots 19 in the walls thereof through which the capsule may be viewed. The outer shell is provided with a finger-piece 20 and the head with a knurled end 21, and the relative movement of the twoshells may conveniently be effected by grasping the knurled end 21 with one hand and rotating the outer shell by means' of the linger-piece with the other hand, after the capsule has been placed in the inner shell.
Passing through the head of the syringe is a plunger 22 provided with a pointed inner end 23 for engaging the outer stopper 23( ofthe capsule and with a thumb-piece 24.
It is desirable to provide a slight degree of friction betweenA the plunger and the head, and in the present instance I employ a spring 25 disposed in an undercut recess in the head for this purpose, said spring engaging the walls o-f said recess, and the end portions 26, 26 embracing the plungerrod. The cylindrical end portion 15 of the outer shell is provided with a threaded extension for engagement withl the socket 27 of the needle 28. f f
- After the capsule 29 has been inserted in its holder and one shell rotated with respect to the other in the manner above described, the stopper 30 is'punctured by the needle, whereupon the depression of the plunger will eject the liquid from the capsule. Preferably the end of the capsule is flanged as shown at 31 in order to better retain the stopper and prevent the withdrawal of the same from the capsule, when the holder is opened by rotation of the outside shell in the opposite direction.
After the holder has been opened and the needle. Withdrawn from the stopper, said capsule may be removed from the holder by' y desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
l. A hypodermic vsyringe comprising asemi-cylindrical shell provided with a head at one end and with a capsule stop at the other, a second semi-cylindrical shell disposed circumferentially with respect to the first mentioned shell provided at one end with a cylindrical end portion surrounding saidlstop, and at the other end with a cylindrical portion surrounding said head, said shells being relatively movable longitudinally and rotatively, and means governing the. movement of one shell with respect to the other.
2. A hypodermic syringe comprising a semi-cylindrical shell provided with a head at one end and with a capsule stop at the other, a second semi-cylindrical shell disposed circumferentially with respect to the first mentioned shell provided at one end with a cylindrical end portion surrounding said stop, and at the other end with a cylindrical portion surrounding said head, said shells being relatively movable longitudi-v nally and rotatively, and a pin in said head same, and means whereby the relative rota.-
tive movement of said members will cause ,the longitudinal movement of said capsule and one of said members with respect to the other of said members and thereby eiect the puncturing of one of the Stoppers of the capsule by said needle.
4. A hypodermic syringe comprising a holder for a capsule having two relatively movable semi-cylindrical circumferentiallydisposed members, a needle secured to one of said members and projecting into the same, and means whereby the relative rotative movement of said members will cause the longitudinal movement of said capsule and one of said members with respect to the other of saidv members and thereby bring said members into locked and closed relation and effect the p-uncturing of one of the Stoppers vof the'ca sule by said needle.
