To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, URI BEHREND, of Washington, in the county of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Treatment of Tobacco for the Manufacture of Cigars, of which the following is a specification:

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvementsin the treatment and preparation of tobacco to be manufactured into cigars, or otherwise prepared for smoking, by combining with the same various medicinal agents, as hereinafter dos ril l, by means of which t will if can shbifl eeeinc i the treatment ot various throat disensgs and nervous disordi7--'f ,The medicinal agents ,which I" employ in the treatment of tobacco are cuhcbs, lobelia, gum'beimoilnalul belladonna. The cubebs, lobelia, and benzoin are particularly applicable to all throat diseases, such as asthma, bronchitis, eatarrh, &c., and the belladonna to nervous disorders, such as nervous headache I employ the mannacured tobacco ready to be manufiietured into cigars, or prepared for smoking, and'saturate, commingle, or othorwise combine it with eubebs, lobelia, and benzoin. The tobacco maybe previously denicotized, if desired; but I prefer, general] y,

to use it in its natural state. When properly combined with the above mentioned sub-- stances, and formed into cigars, or otherwise prepared for smoking, it forms a sure and re-' liable cure for the throat diseases above mentioncd. In case the tobacco is intended to be used for the treatment of nervous head- I ache, as well as'throat diseases, I employ belladonna in addition tothc cubebs, lobelia, and, benzoin. i l

In carrying out my invention I take the natural lont'of the tobacco, or such lcat' after being denieotized by any of the known methods,,and thoroughly incorporate with it the cubebs,lobelia, and benzoin. This may be done by employing said substances in the shape of powder, sprinkling or dusting the same over the leaves before. they are rolled up into cigars or the extracts or tinctures of said substances may be used, the tobacco being saturated with the same and then dried. These substances may be, applied separately in succession, or may be combined and applied as may be desired. Thebelladonua, to be employed when the tobacco is to be used for'various disorders, is applied in the smile inaunor as the other ingredients. 1

The proportion of the various ingredients ma y be considerably varied, according to the diiierent afl'ections to be treated. The cubebs and lobelia may be employed in the proportion of from ten to thirty grains to each ounce of tobacco. The belladonna, however, should rarely be used in proportion exceeding onehalfa grain to the ounce of tobacco,j while the benzoiu can be used in almost any desired proportion.

The tobacco thus prepared may be formed into cigars, or cut up and prepared for smoking in pipes, &c.

What I claim is-- The within-described mode of treating tobacco for the manufacture of medicated cigars, the same consisting in sul' jecting the tobacco to the action of a union of cubebs, lobelia, and bonzoin, substantially in the manner herein shown anddescribe-d. for the purpose specified In testimony that 1 claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand.
