Be it known that I. HARVEY L. WHEELER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Driers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to driers larly designed for use in connection with washing machines-for drying clothes after they have been washed and rinsed.

An object of the invention is to provide a drier mechanism which utilizes centrifugal action for drying clothes eliminating the manual labor with the use of an ordinary wringer and also eliminating the liability of breaking or removing buttons from the clothesduring wringing operation.

A. further objectof this invention is to provide a drier mechanism as specified which is comparatively simple in construction and one wherein the speed of the rotor maybe regulated as desired as well as to provide a' drier arranged so as to prevent accumulation of water therein and the resultant unsanitary conditions within the drier.

The present application is a divisional application of my application upon a washing machine filed March 28, 1921, Serial No. 456,058.

Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description and in the accompanying drawing wherein:

Referring more particularly to the drawing the improved drier'mechanism is shown as ociated with a. clothes washing mechanism 1 which specifically described in my copending application filed March 28. 1921, erial No. 456.058. and after the, clothes are thoroughly cleansed or washed by the washing machine structure they may be removed therefrom and placed in the container of the drier structure. The container 35 is substantially cylindrical in shape and has its side walls perforated as shown at 36 while its upper end is open to permitplacing of the of Sandusky and clothes therein. It has a central sleeve 37 upturned at the center of its base through which the operating shaft 38 extends. The upper end of the sleeve 37 is -flanged as at 39 and a binding block 40 is mounted thereon, the said block being connected to the shaft 38 by means of a threaded stud particu- 41 and a rectangular portion -12 formed upon the shaft which engages in the central rectangular opening in the binding block 40. An imperforate sheet metal cone 43 is attached to the binding block 40 and to the upper surface of the container 35 and acts as a shed to guide' the water outwardly for passage out of the container 35 through the perforations 36 during the rotary movement of the container. The shaft 38 has a friction pulley -15 mounted thereon adapted for coaction with a friction cone 46 for rotating the container 35. The friction cone 46 is feathered upon the drive shaft 53 and it is moved into and out of operative engagement with the frictin pulley :15 by a lever 47. The lever 47 is connected to a shifting lever 18 which is positioned atone side of the bench or support 57 and is connected to the lever 47 by a link 49 and rod 50.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and with my copending application heretofore referred to it will be apparent that after the clothes are thoroughly cleansed they may be rinsed either in the washing machine or removed therefrom and rinsed and placed in the container 35. or they may be rinsed after being placed in the container by running clear water on the clothes in the container during rotation thereof which will cause thorough rinsin action of the clothes and after the clothes are rinsed the flow of water is cut off and bottom 44 of the i continued rotation of the container 35 will force the greater portion of the water out of the clothes by centrifu a1 action and eliminatethe need of, wringing the clothes.

While I have referred to my particular drier as applicable for use in connection with the type of washing machine disclosed in my accompanying application it is to be understood that the drier may be used in connection with any approved type of washer or independent thereof as desired.

It is,'of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in various other manners and the parts'associated in different relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claim hereunto appended.

Having thus described my invention what I claim is:'

A clothes drier comprising a cylindrical receptacle, a rotary perforated clothes container in said receptacle, said container having an open'u'pper end, a bearing sleeve turned upwardly. from the axis of the bottom of said clothes container, a driving shaft extending through said sleeve, a binding block resting upon the upper end of the sleeve and connected to said shaft. a substantially conical water shed connected at its apex to said binding block and the perimeter of its base to said container, a second conical water shed having its apex mounted on the shaft beneath the clothes container and its perimeter connected to the bottom of the-receptacle, a power shaft, and means for establishing connection between said power and driving shafts.
