WELL-BORING APPARATUS.
Application filed September To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, BURWELL BOYKIN, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Beaumont, in the county of Jefferson and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Well-Boring Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to well boring apparatus, the primary object of the invention being to provide means for insuring against the table or rotary support of the apparatus, moving upwardly when the boring tool meets with obstructions.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby upward pressure directed to the rotary table or support will cause the gear forming a part thereof, to be forced into close engagement with the pinion associated therewith, and which drives the table.
Another object of the invention is to rovide means for locking the spider whic is fitted within the table in its uppermost position to facilitate the removal of the pipe from the well.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will ap ear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it 'being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference character 5 designates the base of the apparatus which is formed of a pair of skids 6, suitable means being provided at the ends of the skids for moving the same to various locations.

Connecting the skids are the transversely extending bars 7 and 8, the bar 7 supporting a housing 9 while the bar 8 su ports a bearing member 10. Disposed a jacent to the rotary table to be hereinafter more full described, is a bar 11 which supports the hearing 12, the bearings 10 and 12 accommodating the power shaft 13 which transmits motion to the rotary table 14.
A stationary base 15 forms a part of the device, and is provided with a circular groove to accommodate the rollers 16 on which the rotary table 14 revolves, the rotary table14 being shown as provided with a base 17 which is also formed with a groove to provide a run-way for the rollers 16. The base 17 is provided with gear teeth 18 which .mesh with the teeth of the pinion 19 carried at one end of the power shaft 13, so that rotary movement of the power shaft will result in a relative rotary movement of the Eable 14 to accomplish the drilling opera- The table 14 is provided with a flange '50 which extends inwardly and is formed integral with one wall thereof, the flange being circular in formation and provided with teeth 51, which teeth mesh with the teeth 52 formed on the spider 20 to be hereinafter more fully described. Thus it will be seen that as the table 14 is rotated, through the medium of the power shaft 13 and pinion 19 mounted on one endthereof, the spider 20 is also rotated, to accomplish the rotation of the pipe and drilling apparatus supported by the table.
The spider 20 is of the usual construction, and supports the wedge shaped griping members 21 that grip the pipe an well drilling a paratus, to support the same in proper wor ing position.
Operating within suitable guideways formed adjacent to the base of the device, are the slidable locking plates 22, each of which is provided with a semi-circular cut out portion to encircle a portion of the spider 20, when the device 1s.1n operation. Each of these lockin plates 22 1s provlded with teeth 23 formed on the under surface thereof, which teeth cooperate with the segformed on the lower end of the spider 20, when the plates are moved to their locking positions.
In order that the plates may be moved to and from their locking positions, operating rods 25 are provided, which rods have connection 'with the segmental gears 24;, whereby movement of the rods will cause the operation of the plates.
Formed inv the periphery of the movable table 14 is a groove 26 which is designed to accommodate the securing members 27 that have right angled ends 28 positioned therein, the right angled ends contacting with the walls of the circumferential groove to restrict vertical movement of the table when the same is in operation.
An auxiliary shaft 29 is supported adjacent to the power shaft, there being provided suitable gearing indicated at 30 and clutch members indicated at 31, whereby the direction of rotation of the table may be governed at the will of the operator.
In the operation of the device, when it is desired to pull the pipe used in boring a wel1, the spider 20 is raised by any suitable means, the teeth 51 and 52 being moved out of contact.
With the spider in its raised position, the locking plates 22 are moved inwardly to position directly under the spider, where the lifting means is loosened allowing the spider to fall onto the locking plates 22, the lugs thereof contacting with the lugs of the locking plates to prevent rotation of the spider during the pulling operation.
After a pipe hasbeen pulled, and it is necessary to replace the spider, locking plates 24 are moved to positions as indicated by Figure 2 of the drawings, wheres upon the spider falls to its original or operative position.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A well drilling apparatus including a stationary base, rollers mounted on the base, a rotary member positioned on the rollers and having an inwardly extended circular flange, upwardly extended teeth on the flange, a spider positioned within the rotary member and having an outwardly extended flange formed at its upper end, teeth formed on the last mentioned flange and adapted to cooperate with the teeth formed on the' flange "of the rotary member to, lock the spider to the rotary member.
