Description

N. B. THOMAS ET AL IRON June 30, 1925. 1,544,502
Filed'Nov 22, 1921 WITNESSFQ ATTORNEY Patented June 30, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NOBLE B. THOMAS AND 0230 N. SMITH, OF LOGANSPORT, INDIflNA,
IRON.
Application filed November 22, 1921. Serial No. 517,008.
7 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that NOBLE B. THOMAS and ()zno' N. SMITH, citizens of the United States, residing at Logansport, in the county of Cass and State of Indiana, have inventednew and useful Improvements in Irons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to electric irons, and has for its object the provision of an in iron of this character divided into upper and lower compartments, the former containing the heating unit, while the latteris adapted to contain waterv or other liquid which not only serves to retain the heat in the iron an appreciable time after the current is cut oil", ut also serves to prevent the iron from burning or otherwise injuring the cloth with which it is used.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accom anying drawing, the invention residing in t 1e construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as claimed. 1
In the drawing forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a view of the iron constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the automalic switch for the iron.
referring to the drawing in detail, 10 indicates the iron constructed in accordance with the present invention, the latter being divided by a partition 11 into upper and lower compartments 12 and 13 respectively.
The upper compartment 12 receives the heating unit, the latter being connected with a suitable source of current (not shown) through the instrumentality of an automatic switch 14 in the matter of an ex- 4 pandible helical spring disposed to engage a fixed contact upon the expansion thereof. The switch is controlled by the temperature of the iron so as to automatically cut off the current when the iron reaches a'predetermined temperature and to turn on the current when the heat of the iron falls below this temperature. A switch button 14: is provided for actuating the switch it desired. The compartment 13 of the iron-is adapted to be filled with Water or other suitable liquid which not only serves to retain the heat in the iron for an appreciable length of time after the current has been cut oil, with a resultant saving in the consumption of the current, but also prevents the iron from burning or otherwise injuring the clothover which the iron is moved. The iron'is simple in construction, and can be manufactured and sold at a nominal cost.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the inventionwill be readily apparent, we desire to have it understood that we do not limit ourselves to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
What we claim is: I
An electric iron of the character described comprising a hollow body, a horizontal partition dividing the body into a water chamber and a heating chamber arranged above the water chamber, a fixed contact arranged in the heating chamber, an expandible switch element arranged to engage said fixed contact and manual control means for the switch element.
In testimony whereof they ailix their signatures.
NOBLE B. THOMAS. OZRO N. SMITH.
