B. H. LENGSFIELD BOX TOP Filed July 7, 1924 Patented June 30, 1925.
UNITED STATES BYRON H. LENGSFIELD, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
BOX TOP.
Application filed July 7,
To all 'whmn, it may concern:
Be it known that I, BYRONYH. LENGSFIELD, citizen of the United States,- residing at New Orleans, in the arish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, ave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box Tops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in box tops, and more particularly to the formation of a top, which will be adapted to receive special descriptive or decorative cards for designating different seasons and occasions, such as holidays and the like.
An object. of the invention is to provide a box top that will be so constructed that it will be adapted to receive descriptive or decorative cards, so that when a holiday has just passed, and a'dealer has a considerable stock of packages provided with these tops, he may by simply withdrawing the cards have the usual staple package of the manufacturer immediately ready for sale without any loss or delay whatsoever.
More particularly this invention relates to box tops for boxes to contain candy. Holidays and other special days such as Mothers Day, Thanksgiving, Halloween, St. Patricks Day, Easter, etc., are looked upon as once-a-year candy selling days by the confectionery trade, but it is not practical nor economical for them to purchase special boxes, to stimulate their sales on these days, on account of the risk of carrying over large stocks from one year to the other. The improved box top is so designed as to have the general appearance of a standard staple box top, and the package is therefore marketable throughout the year. The box top has a concealed slot at one end, into which may be fitted a special descriptive and attractive card for such holidays as Mothers Day, Thanksgiving, Halloween, St. Patricks day, Easter, etc., or any other special day, as birthdays, wedding days, etc. The cards can readily be removed thereby converting the special holiday box top into the original staple package bear ing brand and label. In this manner a dealer can be furnished with .a complete set of cards for every holiday and occasion in the year, for his stock of box tops, enabling him to feature a special package without be- 1924. ing burdened with once-a-year sellers, and large stocks.
In the accompanying drawings whichv form a part of my appl1cation- Fig. 1 is a pers ective view of a box showmg my improve box cover thereon;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a special card partially inserted in the cover frame to dshow the application of the invention, an
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one corner of the box cover showing gate or slot through which card is inserted.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and accompanying drawings toindicate corresponding parts.
My improved box top is provided with the usual ends 1, and sides 2, and is provided on its upper surface with a raised frame 3 which is spaced a slight distance from the top portion 4 of the lid on cover. A manufacturing confectioners trade name or label 5 will be imprinted upon the top portion 4 and will be so positioned that the frame 3 will set off the same effectively.
The opposite sides and one end of the frame 3 and top portion 4 are joined together, while the opposite end thereof is open to provide a gate or slot. 6 through which appropriate special descriptive and attractive cards 7 may be inserted so that the box top will be appropriate to the season. These cards can be readily inserted or removed, the box top always being suitable for use with a card inserted in the slot, or without a card. If the box top is to be used without a card, the manufacturers label and descriptive matter is merely set off bythe frame which serves as a decorative feature.
It will be understood that with ordinary holiday packages of goods, it is usual for the dealer to return the unsoldspecials, thereby entailing considerable loss. In my invention, the packages are the ordinary suitable packages for every-day use, and there is no loss to the dealer or manufacturer.
Suitable cards for the various holidays may be furnished the dealer so that the proper cards may be inserted thro'ugh the gate or'slot 6 to overlie the confectioners tradename or label when it is desired to sell holiday specials.
In this manner, a dealer can be furnished with a complete set of cards for every holiday and occasion in the year for his stock of box tops, thereby enabling him to feature a special package without being burdened with 0nce-ayear sellers and large stocks.
Many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. A package consisting of a box filled with gift articles, having a lid containing suitable information to indicate the nature of the gift articles, the said lid being provided with a pocket having an open face and a removable card in the pocket containing information relative to some special occasion, the said card when in place covering the said first mentioned information whereby the package may be sold as a gift package with reference to the special occasaid gift articles, the said lid being provided with a pocket having anopen face, and a removable card adapted to be placed in the pocket containing information relative to some special occasion, the said card when in place concealing the said first mentioned information whereby the box mayibe used in forming apackage adapted to be sold as a gift package with reference special occasions with the card in place, and as a standard staple package when the card is removed. a
.In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
