CAR MOUNTING.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMYR A. LAUGHLIN,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Oregon, county of Ogle, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car Mountings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates toimprovements in car mountings, and has for its object the provision of improved means for mounting a car body on its trucks, which is of simple construction and efficient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,

The form of construction in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, comprises a suitable truck 8 mounted on suitable wheels '9 to run upon the tracks 10 in the usual way, two of such trucks being providedfor each car, as will be readily understood.
Each truck is provided with the usual truck bolster 11 having the usual center bearing 12 thereon by means of which the car is pivotally mounted on the truck so as to be capable also of slight lateral movement thereon.
Arranged near each end of the bolster 11 is an upstanding bearing head 18 having indented sides 14 as shown. Opposed to each of the bearing heads 13 is a corresponding bearing head 15 having indented sides 16 and depending from the body bolster 17 as shown. A rocker member 18 is interposed placement of the same.-
between each opposed set of bearing heads, the rocker'me'mber 18 being providedat top and bottom with projecting flanges forming pockets 19 loosely embracing the heads 13 and 15 as shown. The top and bottom of each rocker 18 is curved. as indicated to make rolling contact with the ends of the bearing heads13 and 15 and whereby the swinging of the truck relatively to the car will be permitted with a minimum of friction. Each r'ocker 18 is also provided with a transverse pin 20 projecting laterally from opposite sides thereof and engaging openings 21 in depending hangers 22 as indicated, and whereby when the car body lifts or tilts, the rocker will also be lifted or tilted to prevent disengagement ordis= By this arrange: ment a very simple and effective operative connection is provided for the rockers, which will prevent their displacement dur-' ing all conditions of normal use. In the modified form of construction shown in Figs. 6 and each rocker is provided at top and bottom and on its for:- ward and rear sides with flanges 23, and 2% said flanges forming in effect pockets to engage the bearing heads having open corners, which permit of the ready escape of dust and dirt, but of course must be made correspondingly heavier to stand the strains Otherwise the construction is the same as that already indicated.
WhileI have illustrated'and' described the preferred forms of construction for carrying my invention into effect, these are capable of variation and modification. without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of the construction set forth, but desire to avail myselfvof, such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. In a car mounting, the combination with a truck and a body pivotally mounted thereon, of opposed bearing heads depending from said body and upstanding from said truck, the ends of said heads being provided with rolling bearing surfaces; a rocker member interposed between said bearing heads, said rocker being provided with hear; ing surfaces making rolling contact with the ends of said heads; and projecting stop members on one end of said rocker loosely embracing the sides of the corresponding bearing head to maintain operative relations between them, substantially as described.
2. In a car mounting, the combination with a truck and a body pivotally mounted thereon, of opposed bearing heads depending from said body and upstanding from said truck, the ends of said heads being provided with rolling bearing surfaces; a rocker member, interposed between said bearing heads, said rocker being provided with bearing surfaces making rolling contact with the ends of said heads; and projecting stop members on one end of said rocker loosely embracing the four sides of the corresponding bearing head to maintain operative relations between them, substantially as described.
3. In a car mounting, the combination with a truck and a body pivotally mounted thereon, of opposed bearing heads depending from said body and upstanding from said truck, the ends of said heads being provided with rolling bearing surfaces; a rocker member interposed between said bearing heads, said rocker being provided with bearing surfaces making rolling contact with the ends of said heads; means on one end of said rocker engaging the sides of the corresponding bearing head to maintain operative relations betweenthem; and an operative connection with said rocker, lifting the rocker when the body lifts, substantially as described.
4. In a car mounting, the combination with a truck and a body pivotally mounted thereon, of opposed bearing heads depending from said body and upstanding from said truck, the ends of said heads being provided with rolling bearing surfaces; a rocker member interposed between said bearing heads, said rocker being provided with bearing surfaces making rolling contact with the ends of said heads; means on one end of said rocker engaging the four sides of the corresponding bearing headto maintain operative relations between them, and an operative connection with said rocker, lifting the rocker when the body lifts, substantially as described. I 5. In a car mounting, the combination with a truck and a body pivotally mounted thereon, of opposed bearing heads depending from said body and upstanding from said truck, the ends of said heads being provided with rolling bearing surfaces; a rocker member interposed between saidbearing heads, said rocker being provided with bearing surfaces making rolling contact with the ends of said heads; projecting stop members on one end of said rocker loosely embracing the sides of the corresponding bearwith a truck and a body pivotally mounted thereon, of opposed bearing heads depending from said body and upstanding from said truck, the ends of said heads being pro vided with rolling bearing surfaces; a rocker member interposed between said bearing heads, said rocker being provided with bearing surfaces making rolling contact with the ends of said heads; projecting stop members on one end of said rocker loosely embracing the four sides of the corresponding bearing head to maintain operative relations between them; and an operative connection with saidrocker, lifting the rocker when the body lifts, substantially as described.
7. In a car mounting, the combination with a truck and a body pivotally mounted thereon, of opposed bearing heads depending from said body and upstanding from said truck, the sides of said bearing heads being indented; a rocker member interposed between said bearing heads, said rocker being provided with bearing surfaces making rolling contact with the ends of said heads, said rocker member being provided'at top and bottom with projecting flanges forming pockets loosely embracing said heads, and an operative connection between said rocker member and said body lifting the rocker when the body lifts, substantially as described.
8. In a car mounting, the combination with a truck and a bodypivotally mounted thereon, of opposed bearing heads depend ing from said body and upstanding from said truck, the sides of said bearing heads being indented; a rocker member interposed between said bearing heads, said rocker member being provided with bearing surfaces making rolling contact with the ends of said heads, and said rocker member being provided at top and bottom with pr jecting flanges forming pockets loosely embracing said heads; laterally extending projections on opposite sides of said rocker; and hangers depending from said body, said hangers being provided with openings engaging said lateral projections, substantially as described.
9. The combination with a bearing head provided at its end with a rolling bearing surface, of a rocker having a bearing surface making rolling contact therewith; and stop projections on said rocker loosely embracing the four sides of said head to main tain operative relations between them, substantially as described. I
10. In a car mounting, the combination with a truck and a body pivotally mounted thereon, of opposed bearing heads depending from said body and upstanding from said truck, the sides of said bearing heads being indented; a rocker member interposed between said bearing heads, said rocker member being provided with bearing surfaces making rolling contact with the ends of said heads and said rocker member being provided at the top and bottom with projecting flanges forming pockets open at the corners and loosely embracing said heads; laterally extending projections on opposite sides of said rocker; and hangers depending from said body, said hangers being provided with openings engaging said lateral projections, substantially as described.
