PATENT" OFFICE.
EMMITT S. ANDERSON, O'F FORT FRANCIS,
' ONTARIO, CANADA.
COUCH ROLL.
Application filed July 8, 1924. Serial No.'72 4, 853.
To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMITT S. ANDERSON,
I a citizen of the United States, residing. at
- Fort Francis,
in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Couch Roll, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to couch rolls especially adapted'to be used upon paper making machines and it consists in the novel features hereinafterdescribed and claimed,
An object of the invention is to provide a couch roll which will eliminate the necessity of compelling the use of the jacket laced about such rolls as is now the practice and which is objectionable owing to the fact that the lacing frequently becomes twisted, thus forming lumps and causing damage to the machine and the products.
With this object in view the structure comprises a roll consisting of a body or core made of cast iron and having a plurality of spirally disposed ribs extending the full length thereof. These ribs are provided with transversely disposed heads which are convexly curved thereby preventing the said head from having a tendency to develop corners or sharp angles while running. A series of-disks of pressed felt is threaded upon the ribs and the core and the said disks extend the full length of the, core. Collars are mounted upon the end portions of the core at the "ends of the series of disks. Gudgeous are mounted upon the ends of the core and are disposed over the end portions of the shaft .which the core.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a longltudinal sectional view of passes centrally through i the couch roll, V
Figure '2, is an enlarged fragmentary side eleiyation bf an end portion of the couch to Figure 3' is the couch roll.
the couch roll.
side elevation of .notches' 12 which receive the ends a transverse sectional view of p is an end elevation'of one the elevation of one of the collars applied to The icouch' roll. comprises a cylindrical being: provlded at their outer edges with heads"3"iwhich are convexed transversely.
The ribs extend the full length of the core. The core-is provided with a longitudinal contral bore in which is located 'a shaft 3. Y
Disks 4 of compressed felt are threaded upon the core land the disks are provided with notches 5 which snugly receive the ribs and the head portions 3 thereof. Collars 6 are mounted upon the end portions of the core and the said collars are disposed at the ends of the series of disks 4.. The collars are provided with notches 7 which receive the end portions of the ribs and the outer corner portions of the collars are beveled as at 8. Gudgeons 9 are mounted upon the ends of the shaft 13 and secured'by means of nuts 10, and the said gudgeons are provided at their inner ends with disks 11 having of the ribs 2.
When the nuts are tightened upon the shaft the disks of the. gudgeons force the collars in close contact with the terminal 'disks and the disks are compressed u on the holding the disk and they may be trued up by .grin
in order that their edge surfaces may lie in g the same cylindrical plane; After the disks f have upon the shaft 3, the mits 10 are-turned up tightso-that' the disks will fit tightl against each other. This will give the ro a hard surface and the'roll may then be soaked'in hot water for a suflicient length of time to permit the water to be taken up b thedisks whereby the said disks are shr upon the shaft and their peripheries may be trued up by grinding in a usual manner. When the roll is not in use, the disks should be kept in a moist condition.
comprising a core having a central bore, a shaft located'in said bone,
spirally disposed ribs portions which are convexed transversely, disks threaded upon the core and-the ribs, the ends of the core and the rib, gudgeons receiving the ends of the shaft and having disks which receive the ends of the core and the ends of the ribs and provided upon the, periphery of the core, said ribs having head been assembled 10c Having thus described the invention, what i nuts screwed upon the shaft and engaging the gudgeons.
2. A couch roll comprising a core having upon its periphery a series of spaced spirally disposed ribs, the ribs being provided at their outer edges with head portions, disks of felt threaded upon the'core andthe ribs, shoulders mounted upon the end portions of the core and the ribs, and the gudgeons mounted upon the end portions of the shaft and having disks which receive the end portions of the core and the rib.
3. A couch rollcomprising a core having upon its periphery a series of spaced spirally disposed ribs, the ribs being provided at their outer edges with head portions, disks of felt threaded upon the core and the ribs, shoulders mounted upon the end portions of the core and the ribs, gudgeons mounted upon the end portion-s of the shaft and having disks which receive the end portions of the core and the ribs, nuts screwed upon the shaft and engaging the gudgeons, the felt.
dis-ks being shrunk by the application of moisture upon the core and the ribs.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
EMMITT s. ANDERSON.
