HAMMER'.
Application led August 17, 1923. Serial' No. 657,84L
'end State of illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammers, of which the following is s specification.
My invention relates to machinists hammers of the clsss in which the hammer body formed of steel or other suitable hard metal, is provided with s striking heed of sott metal, such es Babbitt metal, lead, or cop-- per, which may be removed and replaced when battered and worn 'from use, end a new one substituted. My present invention lies for its object the provisiono means for facilitating the removal oit the worn soit metal member for replacement by :i new one. ln lPstent No. Letti granted to me on on Mey '6, i924 ll have described and illustrsted s hammer et the type mentioned, and my present invention moy be considered :is en improvement on the tool therein .disclosed, by the provision oi* the novelrneans for removing the sott metel memben the oi the 'invention being more particularly pointed out in the 'eppended clsiins,
ln nccompenying drawings forming e part of this speciiicetion, sind illustrating my invention in s preferred form, Figure l is e view et e double-faced hammer, the upper heed being shown in s central section end lower in elevation; Fig. 2 is e similar view of the seme tool, et right 'ongles 'to the positionvshown in Fig. l sind similarly sectioned; Fig, 3 is end view' ci the mer body; Fig, is s .perspective ci theV ing plug, detached; Fig. 5 exhibits tivo views o the tool for removing g heed, positions 90 eport; t e diderent orm of vention be emnsversely disposed d .in longitudinal' es of the dren/ing. l e, hammer in cross secis formed verseiy oi the with. en obtnsely l is 'formed reeep tion of a loose plug member t of herd metal,
such as that of which the body itself is y composed, and the' sot metal striking body 5. The end faces of the body and inner faces of the cavity together with the outer faces.
of the plug, form s seat for the reception of the striking head. rllie plug is formed with a discous heed 6 and an axial cylindrical stem 7, which latter extends through an axial reduced inwardly extending portion of the socket nearly but not quite to the inner wall of a, transverse cylindrical oriice 8 formed in the hammer body and intersect-y ing the reduced axial portion of the socket which receives the stem ci the plug. 'llie faces of the hammer body and plug which .forinthe seat for the soft motel heed bemadres s, slightly more acute angle with the exis or the socket thsnthe fece i9; ot the plug.
As in thecase ot the hammer described f in my prior epplication'beore referred to, the striking heed 5 in its finished' form ready r'lor applicationv to the hammer body is formed with sin inner annuler tlsnge it which in the use oi the 'tool is expended end driven into the socket or sest above described so that when battered end ready for replacement it is seeted'in sind coinpletely lls the socket. 'fo remove it e dritt pin i5, having en inclined fece i6 is inserted in thecross orifice 8, with its 'fece l@ directed towards the stem of the plug, so thet when driven it wedde the ping outwardly sind nnsest the striking heed The pin having been withdrawn ond the 'plug detached from the heed end replaced in the hammer body, the letter is then ready for the insertingot' e new heed l il claim:
L A hemmer having e herd instel. body `termed with e socket having e reduced `sxiel portion and s, transverse orir'ice intersectin such reduced small portion, s herd mete having s dissous outer portion en Yr stem portion extending throi lli arranged to seat between the discous portion of the plug and the opposite Wall of the socket of the hammer body and having its central portion arranged to seat against the discous portion of said plug, said plug being arranged to cooperate With a Wedge in said orifice to unseat the striking head.
2. A hammer having a hard metal body formed with a socket having adjacent its bottom an undercut locking face and also form-ed with an orifice communicating With the central inner portion of said socket, a hard metal plug arranged centrally Within said socket adjacent the locking face of such socket, and a soft metal-striking head seated in said socket and seating against said plug, said plug being provided-on its outer side with inclined spreading faces adapted to spread said striking head into looking enlgagement With said locking face of the socket and also being exposed to a drift pin through said orifice,
3. A hammer having a hard metal body formed With a socket having adjacent its bottom an undercut locking face anda reduced axial portion, and also formed with a transverse oriiice communicating with the bottom of said reduced axial portion of the socket, a hard metal plug having a discous outer portion formed with a peripheral spreading face and an inner stem portion extending through said reduced axial portion of the socket and into said transverse orice, and a softmetal striking head` seated in said socket and seating against` said plug, the stem of said plug being arranged to cooperate With a Wedge-faced drift pin inserted through said oriice.
