UNITED STATES NORRIS E. eoonaron, or BATTLE GREEK, MICHIGAN, assrsnon To SANITARIUM PATENT OFFICE.
AND HOSPITAL EQUIPMENT COMPANY, OF BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN.
VARIABLE-SPEED DRIVING GEAR r012. Morons;
Application filed July. 16, 1924. Serial No. 726,327.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORRIS E. Goomuorr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, county of Calhoun, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Variable-Speed Driving Gears for Motors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in variable speed driving gear 'for motors.
. My improved variable speed driving gear is especially. designed by me for use on generators used for therapeutic purposes, and although well adapted for numerous other purposes, I have illustrated my-improvements as embodied by me in machines of the specific class referred to.
The main object of this invention is to pro vide an improved variable speed driving means for small motors which has a large range of speed and may be easily adjusted to secure any speed within its range or scope.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of construction and operation of my invention-will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow;
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. I is a front perspective View of an apparatus embodying the features of my invention, a portion of the cabinet or table being broken away. 1
Fig. II is a fragmentaryplan View. 7
Fig. III isa fragmentary View partially in vertical section on a line corresponding to line 38 of Fig. II.
Fig. IV is a detail vertical section on a line corresponding to line 4-4 of Fig. II showing further structural details.
In the drawing the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines and similar reference numerals indicate similar parts in all of the views.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the main base plate of the apparatus, 2 a sinusoidal current generator, 3 an interrupter in connection therewith and 4 the generator shaft. These parts are not illustrated in detail as they form no part of my present invention.
. The electricmotor designated generally by the numeral 5 is provided with a base 6 which is slidably supported on the ways 7 of the motor supporting base 8, this motor supporting base being mounted on the main base 1 of the machine. The motor is adjusted upon and held in its adjusted positions on the ways 7 by means of the adj usting screw 9 which has threaded engagement with the upwardly projecting arm 10 on the base 8 and swivelled connection with the arm 11 on the motor base 6, the adjusting screw being-disposed through the arm 11 having collars 12 at each side thereof as shown in Fig. 11.
nally movable shaft 13 on the outer end of which is a driving gear 14 having a friction face coacting with the periphery of the driven gear 15 on the driven or generator shaft 4. It will be understood that as the motor is moved on its ways the driving gear is moved relative to the driven gear so that the speed atwhich the driven gear is driven isvaried or changed.
The driving gear is supported in driving engagement with the driven gear by means of the thrust bearing 16 which is carried by the yoke 17 pivoted at 18 on the projecting arm or bracket 19 on the motor base. The upper, end of; this bearingsupporting yoke is adjustably supported by means of the screw 20 having threaded engagement with the bracket 21 mounted on thetop of the motor and having swivelled engagement with thecoupling member 22 pivoted at 23 to the upper end of the yoke.
With the parts thus arranged, when itis desired to vary the speed the screw. 20 is manipulated to release the driving gear 14. The screw 9 is then manipulated to properly position the driving gear relative to the driven gear and the screw 20 readjusted to bring the gear 14 into driving engagement.
The screw 20 has a series of teeth 24 which the spring detent 25 coacts to hold the screw in its adjusted position. v
Structures embodying the features of my invention are simple and durable in structure and may be very easily adjusted to secure any desired speed within the range thereof.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination of a supporting base provided with ways, a motor having an axially movable driving shaft disposed transversely of said ways and provided with a base slidable on said ways, a driven friction gear disposed with its axis transverse to the axis of said driving shaft, a driving gear on said driving shaft having a friction face co-acting with the periphery of said driven gear, a thrust bearing for supporting said. driving gear in driving engagement with said driven gear, a supporting yoke for said bearing pivotally mounted on said motor base, an adjusting screw for said yoke mounted on said motor and having a collar swivelled thereon and pivotally connected to said yoke whereby said driving gear is adjustably supported in coacting relation to said driven gear, and an adjusting screw for said motor having threaded engagement with said supporting base and swivelled engagement with said motor base whereby the motor may be adjusted on said ways to vary the position of the driving gear relative to said driven gear for changing the speed of said driven gear.
2. The combination of a supporting base provided with ways, a motor having an axially movable driving shaft disposed transversely of said ways and provided with a base slidable on said ways, a driven friction gear disposed with its axis transverse to the axis of said driving shaft, a driving gear on said driving shaft having a friction face coacting with the perphery of said driven gear, a thrust bearing for supporting said driving gear in driving engagement with sait driven gear, a supporting yoke for said bearing pivotally mounted on said motor base, an adjusting screw for said yoke, and an adjusting screw for said motor whereby the motor may be adjusted on said ways to vary the position of the driving gear relative to said driven gear for changing the speed of said driven gear,
3'. The combination of a supporting base provided with ways, a motor slidable on'said ways provided with an axially movable driving gear, a driven friction gear disposed with its axis transverse to the axis of said driving gear to coact therewith, a bearing for supporting said driving gear in driving engagement with said driven gear, a supporting yoke for said bearing pivotally mounted on said motor, an adjusting screw for said yoke mounted on said motor and having a collar swivelled thereon and pivotally connected to said yoke whereby said driving gear is adjustably supported in coacting relation to said driven gear, and an adjusting screw for said motor having threaded engagement with said supporting base and swivelled engagement with said motor whereby the motor may be adjusted on said ways to vary the position of the driving gear relative to said driven gear for changing the speed of said driven gear.
l. The combination of a supporting base provided with ways, a; motor slidable on said ways provided with an axially movable driving gear, a driven friction gear disposed with its axis transverse to the axis of said driving gear to coact therewith, a bearing for supporting said driving gear in driving engagement with said driven gear, a supporting yoke for said bearing pivotally mounted on said motor, an adjusting screw for said yoke, and an adjusting screw for said motor whereby the motor may be adjusted on said ways to vary the position of the driving gear relative to said driven gear for changing the speed of said driven gear.
5. The combination of a sup-porting base provided with ways, a motor slidable on said ways provided with an axially movable driving gear, a driven friction gear disposed with its axis transverse to the axisof said driving gear to coact therewith, a. bearing for supporting said driving gear in driving engagement with said driven gear, an adjustable support for said bearing, an adjusting screw for said bearing support mounted on said motor whereby said driving gear is adjustably supported in coacting relation to said driven gear, and an adjusting screw for said motor whereby the motor may be adjusted on said ways to vary the position of the driving gear relative to said driven gear for changing the speed of said driven gear.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my NORRIS E. GOODRICH. [1,.v s.]
