which is adapted for various situations but I is particularly adapted'to withstand shocks and jars and to prevent the passage of ve hicles and passengers, its use being considered primarily as applicable to ferry boats and draw-bridges although itsuse is not limited to these situations.
The device isalso adapted for opera-tion from a dista'nt point such as the pilot house or from'the control station of abridge and can be at the same time operated from various points such as the deck of' aferry boat adj acenti the gate thereby making it possible to reduce tl' bor now employed in operating the gates jferry boats. i
The inventio is also designed to provide a series of'gate that are positive and sure in their operat ionfand that will securely hold vehicles from rolling olf the ends of boats and'through open draws, the gates being preferably op'er'atedby fluid pressure such as steam' orair' although any other means of operation can be provided.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a sectionalyiew showing in general outline the'hull of a ferry boat, the gates being shown in elevation but one of the'operating cylinders being shown in section, this view showing the ga'tes closed, and Figure 2 is a' similar view but with the gates shown open. It is customary now to either use a chain or a heavy cable which is caught over hooks at its ends and which extends across the roadway as a bar to the passage of vehicles. The side roadways or openings for foot passengers have at present the ordinary toggle form of gates which are independently opera'ted and which are-collapsed against the side of the roadway. The description of roadway means any of the situations or services used for vehicles and to which this form of gate is adapted but in the drawings the roadway is shown as the deck 10 on the hull 11, the deck having standards 12 on each side of the main roadway and which standards define with the end rails 13 the side roadways for passengers. any convenient point distant from the gate control is located.

it will be evident that various changes can he made in the construction shown with out departing from the scope of the invention ll claim:
1. A gate comprising a main gate, a sup port for the gate above the roadway, the roadway having a recess into which the gate can descend, side gates pivoted on.

2. A gate comprising a pair of standards projecting above the roadway, a gate slidable with its ends in the standard, the road= way having a recess to receive the gate, a

A gate comprising a pair of standards flanking the roadway, a gate slidable in the standards and adapted to descend in a narrow recess in the roadway, a cylinder under each standard, a piston in each cylinder, :1 piston rod connected to each piston and supporting the end of the gate within the assaiae standards and a valved supply system for controlling the raising and lowering of the gate. 7
