EIJUZBRICATIQN 0F PARTS RUI'ATEIG- AT HIGH SPEED Application filed April 29, 1922. Serial No. 555,689.
To a-ZZ whom it may camera:
Be it known that l, @HARLES FnAnn'r, a citizen of the French Republic, and a resident of Asnieres. Seine, France, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Lubrication of Parts Rotating at High Speed, 0r which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for effecting lubrication of the contacting surfaces ct rotary pumps and the like of the radially moving vane type, the vanes being carried by a rotor, and the outer ends of the vanes normally'engaging the inner surface of the cylinder or stator. To this end, theinvention contemplates the provision of the forward edge ofthe contacting surface of the respective vanes with a beveled surface, either plain or curved, the angle of the bevel being greater than the maximum angle formed by the normal to the vane and the tangent to the surface of the stator with which the vane contacts, the difierence between the angles being such that oil is caused to pass under pressure between the contacting surfaces.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
1 is a diagrammatic sectional elevation of a rotary pump involving the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail View of the outer end of the vane which engages the stator surface.
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing a. modified form of beveled edge of the vane.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, 7* indicates the rotor member of the pump, compressor or similar apparatus, in which is mounted the radially movable vane a, the outer edge of which engages the cylindrical wall of the stator 0?. The outer and forward edge of the vane a, with reference to the direction of movement.- of the vane, is beveled by cutting away a section represented by the prism'defined between the lines cc. 0g, and e-g, so that the angle m is greater, for all positions of the rotor, than the angle m, said angle m being that defined bet-ween lines en, which is normal to the longitudinal axis of the vane a, and the line ec', which is tangent to the circle defining the wall (i of the stator at point c, and the angle a" being that included between the normal to the vane c% and line cm defining the beveled surface e-g. The angle 99 is a maximum when the point e of the vane engages point h of the stator, as indicated in Fig. 1, which point it is the intersection of the circumference (i of the stator and the perpendicular to the middle of line between points 0 and 0', which are the centers. of the stator and rotor axes, respectively, lln other words, the angle 122 between lines /t0 and h0 indicates the maximum value of angle a, and in all'cases the angle 9: mustbe greater than angle 0 2. The difference of these two angles is such that the oil. which is on the surface of the stator 05, owing to its lnertia, is subjected during the operation of the machine to a pressure forcing it between the contacting surface of the stator (Z and the end of the vane a, thus forming a lubricating film which is not scraped off by the rotary movement of the. vane. This pressure increases with the speed of the rotor, consequently with the centrifuga force, and balances the latter, and generally all those forces tending to move the vane into engagement with the stator.
Obviously the plain or prismatic surface he o on the outer end of the vane may be replaced by a curved surface, as illustrated in Fig. 3, the generating curve being inscribed in the angle 7)-c the resultant curved and beveled forward edge of the ram serving the same purpose and effect as the plain beveled surface or edge, as indicated 'in Fig. 2.
hat I claim is: V
1. Means for effecting lubrication of the contactingsurfaces of rotary pumps and the like ofthe radially moving vane type. which comprises vanes each having the forward edge of its surface engaging the stator wall beveled to an angle greater than the maxi mum angle formed by the normal to the vane and the tangent to the surface with which the vane contacts, whereby the lubricant is forced under pressure between the surfaces in contact.
2. Means as set forth in claim 1 in which the beveled forward edge of the respective vanes is a curved surface.
ln testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
CHARLES FRADET.
