IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-MEASURING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,170, dated August 18, 1874; application filed February 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. BRINTNALL, of Medina, in the county of Medina and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Measuring Machine and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the annexed drawin gs, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to machines for measuring carpets, 850.; and consists in the construction and arrangement of the various parts for receiving the original roll, and mechanism for measuring and transferring to a winding-roller.

A A is a light strong frame-work of suitable material, which may be braced laterally by the diagonal braces B B. O G are rollers, which are connected by a loose belt, D, as are also the adjustable sliding rollers O 0. These rollers may be made to work loosely upon the shafts or connecting-rods E. The belts receive the roll of carpet or other material to be measured. F is the receiving-roller, provided with a suitable device for grasping the end of the fabric to be measured, which may be simply a rod hinged at one end of the roller, so that it may retain the end of the fabric by pressing it into a longitudinal slot, in which position the rod may be locked at the other end of the roller. This roller F is provided with an arbored end, F, for reception of a crank for winding the carpet, &o., from the roll below. G is a registering-roller, having a known circumference, and swung between the arms 9 g of a swinging frame, G, which latter slides freely upon the connecting-rod E, and can be adjusted and secured at any position on this rod by the sliding collar H and set-screw h, as shown in Fig. 2.
As the roller F revolves, carrying the fabric beneath the registering-roller G, the number of revolutions of the latter is registered by a suitable arrangement of meterwheels connected with either end, 9, of the roller, and secured to the outer face of one of the arms, g, of the frame G. I have shown no such arrangement of registering-wheels, as various devices may be used, as that, for instance, shown in the patent for cloth-measuring machine granted to me April 19, 1870.
I I are two rods, parallel to each other, provided with and turning upon a common axis, and are used when necessary to give a tension to' the fabric as it is being transferred from the roll direct, or from the receiving-roller F to the winding-shaft J. These rods I receive the fabric between them, guiding it by the sliding guide piece or pieces '5, and tension is given by turning the double shaft I I upon its axis, and, when a proper degree of tension is attained, securing the tension by the thumb set-screw t, situated at either end.
The connecting-rod E being midway between the rollers F and J, the registeringroller G may be turned over against the roller J, so that the measurement may, if desired, be taken from the windin -shaft J.
The roller F is provided with a springclamp, K, operatedby the thumb-screw k, by which a tension may be given to the fabric in leaving this roller. The roll when placed on the belts D is kept in place by the fenderplate L and adjustable plate L, operated by the rod 1, and secured at any point by setscrew Z.
The swinging bar G may be curved so as to rest on the cloth when the roll is of any size on the shaft or roller F, as is shown in Fig. 2.
The adjustable registering-roller G is made small, so that it can be adjusted to the center of any piece, and it will thus prevent the fabric from rolling unevenly, as is the case where the roller extends clear across a fabric.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A.
