IMPROVEMENT IN CUR E-BOXES FOR METALLIC HUBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,165, dated'Auguat 18, 1874; application filed March 30, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES G. ALLEN, of Barre, in the county of Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in (JoreBoxes for Metallic Hubs, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing is a central vertical section of my improved box for forming cores of metallic wheel-hubs. Fig. 2 is a top view of the outer case or box. Fig. 3 is a top view of the pattern or mold of the box. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the core and cover, with the box and pattern removed.
The present invention has for its object the production of a box for forming the cores of metallic wheel-hubs, the use of which will allow the ready withdrawal of the pattern and box without the disturbance and injury to the core material heretofore liable to occur by the ordinary method of freeing it from the box, and will so shape the core as to form the spokemortises of even thickness and obviate the usual draft of the mortises, so as to prevent the wabbling or loosening of the spokes, and taper or convexly slope their sides so as to bind and securely hold the wheel-spokes, and which will allow cores for mortises of varying widths'and depths or lengths to be formed by one box.
And to effect these ends, my improvements consist of a core-box for forming the cores of metallic wheel-hubs, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as I will now proceed to describe and point out in the claims.
In the drawings, A represents the band or circular vertical sides of a metallic or other suitable case or box, beveled downward and inward on the inner periphery, and formed with a bottom circular plate, B, having a central annular opening, a, for the reception of a stem, F, of an axle-mold, E. The bottom plate B is formed at a proper distance between band A and annular opening a, with triangular-shaped or other suitable apertures 11 radiating from the center of the box, so as to leave divisions, c, of equal width between each aperture. Located on the outside of the plate B is an adjustable pattern or mold, formed by a metallic or other suitable circular plate, U, having metallic or other suitable triangular or other shaped projections, d, inclined or sloping concavely downward on the top from the outer to the inner periphery of the projections, to form the core so as to bevel one side of the mortise, and arranged to fit in and out through the apertures b, up within the box, which is provided with a cover, D, formed with a downward-extending rim that fits on over and lifts oii' the band A. The bottom plate B of the box is formed on the top with an annular groove, 6, leaving an annular band, 6, be-
tween it and the aperture a, and forming a seat for an axle-mold, E, formed with an outer cylindrical band, E, that projects below the bottom of the body of the axle-mold so as to fit into the groove e and prevent the wabbling of the mold E, which is provided with a stem, F, that is of lesser diameter than, to form a shoulder with, the mold-body, and projects downward through the aperture a of the bottom plate B and through a central annular aperture, a, of the under plate 0, belowwhich plate 0 it extends a suitable distance for the purpose of holding and steadying the plates B 0 when they are withdrawn from the sand or core composition or material G, which is inserted in the box between projections 01 and axle-mold. Arranged to screw through the under plate 0 between the projections at, near the edge of the plate, are screws f, that bear against the outside of the bottom plate 13, for the purpose of adjusting the plate 0 so as to shorten or lengthen the distance within the case of the projections d, and thus vary the core to form mortises of different widths.
The under plate 0 of the pattern or mold has attached on either side, so as to project therefrom and serve as handles, bent plates or ears I, or it may be otherwise arranged with any other suitable device or devices for lifting it.
The top of the boxplate B is convexly sloped or inclined upward from the rim to the center, to form the core so as to taper the other side of the mortises, which by the tapering of the tops of the projections cl, as before described, are thus made of a wedge shape, so as to bind the spokes and more firmly hold them the farther they are driven in the mortises. The band A is perforated with suitable ventorifiees, i, at proper intervals and locations.
If desired, to further insure the steady passage of the pattern and box, the adjustable plate 0 may be formed with an outside central collar to receive the stem 13.
The operation of my improved core-box is as follows: The axle-mold E is placed within the box so that it rests on the bottom plate B, and its stem F extends through the aperture a to receive and steady the pattern or mold, which passes over it, the projections d of the pattern or mold extending through the apertures 1) into the box the required distance to form the desired width of the mortises; the extension of the projections d within the box or case being regulated by the screws f bearing on the outside of the plate B, or the mold or pattern may be otherwise arranged, as desired, to be adjusted so as to vary the distance of the extension within the case of the projections d. The molds being properly set in place, the box is held by resting the under plate 0 on blocks, or is otherwise supported so as not to disturb the molds, and to allow the sand or core-material to be properly placed within the case or box between the interstices of the molds. The cover D is placed over the top of the box, whose position .is then reversed, and the plate 0, which is now at the top, is lifted by its ears I, or handles, and its projections d are consequently withdrawn from the core-material, which, by the steady movement of the plate 0, insured by its passage 011 the stem F,
is not liable to be disturbed or injured, leaving the core-formation of the mortises of perfectly even thickness, and thus obviating the usual draft of the mortises. The box A is now lifted up over the stem F, which steadies its movement so asto prevent any wabbling or injury to the core, from which the axle-mold is lifted, leaving the core-material in a perfect condition on the cover D, as shown in Fig. 4, ready for baking or otherwise forming.
Having thus fully described my improvements, what I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent, 1s-
l. The combination of the core-box B, having orifices b on its bottom plate, with the under plate 0 having projections d rigidly at tached thereto and adapted to pass through the orifices 1) simultaneously, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the box B, projections d, plate 0, and screws f, the latter regulating the extent of the admission of the projections into the box, substantially as described.
