This locking member 16 comprises a bar 17 which at its upper end has a casting 18 which can be adjustedl longitudinally of the bar 17 by means of thc handle 19. The lowerv end of the rod 17 is provided with a loop 2O fitting over a cam 21- which is operated by the foot pedal 22.V `rThis cam is so arranged that by pressing down on the pedal 22 or the turn wheel 22 the cam is rotated to positively draw the cover section 13 down'into close contact with the top of the compressor box. Inuse the cover 13 is first turned downward on to the compressor box and the casting 18 placed over the end of the cover and the handle 19 turned to'draw the cover down as tight as possible. downward and through. the action of the cam completes the tightening operation. It will be noticed that al single locking mechanism is employed for holding thecoversection in place and as therear ends2 of the cover rest beneath the top cross bars 24 when the cover is in its closed position, there is no possibility yof its being forced away l `from the top of the compressor box.
,After the metal has. been inserted and the compressorbox cover fastened kin place as above described, the plunger 25 is forced forwardly by the toggle mechanism 2G in the'V manner rhereinafter Y described. This plunger is pivotally connected to the toggle arm 27 'isothatwhen the latter'l moves for-l ward the plunger will be'forced forwardly toward thenarrow portion ofthe compressor box. Tol assist in rcompressingthe mate rial the plunger is provided with wings 28 and 29 which afre secured tothe sides ofthe plunger by elongated pivot members 30. The detail of the-plunger and its wings or side armsl 28 and 29 is shown in Figures 3 and 4. In`order to reduce the cost of manu facture thefrontend of theplunger is preferably-formed as a plate 32which is made of hard steel, while the other part of the plunger canV be formed of'l sheetf nieta-l. lVhile the arms or wings 28 and 29 aresc cured to the. plunger by the pivots 30, the arrangement of parts'is such that-the stress is not transmitted through these pivots, but is passed directly from the arms 28 and 29 to the plunger.`
As shown in Figures 3 and 4 the ends 33 and 34 of the arms 28 and 29 are grooved to fit into recesses 35 and 36 inthe front plate of the plunger, the ends 33 and 34 being cut away at'thc topand bottom portions to receive lugs 37 and 38 carried by the plunger. These lugs'arev apertured to permit of the passing of the pin or pivot 30 through the lugsy and the wings 28 and 29.v
To give a wide bearing .surface between the Wings and the compression box the arms or Wings28 and 29 are taperedat 39 and 40 V to correspond with thepinclinatcn of the r1`he foot pedal 22 is theny forced side walls of the compression box and preferably have an additional bevel at the tip port- ions 41 and 42. The forward movement of the plunger is guided by aI bar or guide 43 which fits in a groove on the lower side of the plunger.
In order to. secure the necessary length ef the compression `box and give sufficient length tothe arms, the latter are preferably made longer than the final length of the bale and after the first compression the plunger is Withdrawn and a reducing block 44 inserted, after which a second compression is given so as 5to further compress the bale'. To avoid the necessity of l'iftingthc cover 13 rafter each of the compressionl strokes so as to admit the reducing block, I have provided a novel arrai'igement wherein there is a door or covered opening 45 formed in the cover near the rear A end thereof. lVhen the plunger4 is drawn back forlthesecond compression stroke this covei` can be lifted and 'the' reducing block insertedy just forwardly of the'plate 32 of the plunger, after which-the compression operation is the same as the preceding one except that the material is further compressed into a smaller space.
yTaking up now the toggle construction and the drive mechanism, it will bev-noticed in Figure 1 that the toggle arm 27 is connected to the back toggle link 47, which toggle link at its lowerV en d is. pivoted at 48, the pivot point being located kin the plane of the side frames4 so that the fulcrum point for the,y plunger is in directjline with the compression box. In thisr manner it is possible to secure the necessary strength ofithe frame without `using heavy castings, although to accurately line up the sides of the frame therelispreferably employed a cross member'49 which has at its sides machined faces which receive the inner faces of the main side bars 4 of theframe.` The connecting rod 52 of the ytoggle is pi'votally connected toa vrod 53 which is 'carried by the large gears 54mounted on'stub shafts 55 and supported in the side 'piece 56.

For this purpose a bale kicker 68 is employed. This kicker 'comprises' an oset rod or rocker arm which is pivoted at 69 and has a projection 70 adapted to be forced up into the plane ofv the bale whenever the/foot pedal 71 is forced downward. It will of course be understood that a handle could be substituted for the foot pedal 7l. Afterf the bale has been initially released by operating the kicker, the latter will be returned to its inoperative position automatically by the spring 72.
I do not, however, desire to limit the invention to the particular form of this locking and releasing'mechanism orto the particular arrangement of the various parts except as ultimatelyset forth in the claims.
What I claim as my invention is l. In a baler, the combination with a com-V pression box and a plunger operating in said compression box, of a frame for supporting said parts having an upright, a cover member pivotally carried by said frame, and a cross bar carried by said frame beneath which one end of the cover is held when the cover is in use,` and a single locking member for holding theother end of said cover.'
2. In a baler, the combination with a compression box, of a plunger operable therein, said compression box having its sides and bottom provided with renewable linings of hardermetal than the compression box.
3. In a baler, the combination with a compression box, of a plunger operable therein, said compression box having its sides and bottom provided with renewable linings of harder metal than the compression box, said plunger also having a renewable facing.
4. In a baler, the combinationwith a compression box having tapering sides and laV In order to facilitate the reing a pair of; pivoted wings which are Vadapted-to be contracted towards :each other by the engagement with the sides of the ycompression box when the plunger is moved forward, the outer surfaces of said wings having a relatively wide bearing portion tapered to correspond withrthe taper of the sidesof the compressionbox.
5. In a baler, the combination with a compression box, of a plunger mounted to bereciprocated in said box, said box having its bottom provided with a ,longitudinally extending guide and said plunger having a cooperating slot engaging said guide during the reciprocating movement of said plunger.
6. In a baler, the combination with af plunger and operating means therefor, of a` frame supporting said operating means, a compressor box at one end of said frame, a cover hinged upon said box, a cross bar of said frame extending over the rhinged end of said cover, and means for retaining said cover-in closed position, said means including' a long movable member, an adjustable member carriedby said member and engage able with said cover for clamping the same .against said compressor box,` and means fork moving the iirsbmentloned member longitudinally to increase theV clamping pressure of the' llast-mentioned member against said cover.
7. In a baler, the combination with a com- ,means for actuating the cam after the member aforesaid has been adjusted for increasing the Vclamping pressure exerted against said cover. Y
