M. ZERILLI TOILET ARTICLE Filed March J. 1924 I'NVENTOR /yfm Us Z ERT/L 1 Patented Junev v2, 1.925.
UNITED y sTAras` imams z EnI'LLI, or GLENDALE, NEW Yonk, AssIcNoE f YoEx, N. Yr
T o LEW JOSEPH, or NEW TOILET ARTICLE.
l Applivcation'led March' 1, Serial No. 696,128.
I F York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet Articles, of which the following is a specification'.
This invention relates to articles for toilet use, such as hand-mirrors, brushes and vari-- ous other articles.
.l tures in order -to give satisfaction to nthe user.
A desired thickness is lanother featureessentialto a hand mirror to meet with general acceptance in the trade.
Heretofore, in order to produce a desiredr thickness, it has beenfound necessary to insert a filling of ground material, such as plaster, or Whiting, which is inserted in a semi plastic condition within the frame of I n the outer backing to separate from the the glass. A thin backing has been placed over such material, but it has been found that the action of such filling on the material forming the backing produces `unfavorable results, including la tendenc material.
In such prior constructions moreover, the outer backing on one sldepof a hand mirror J has generally been embossed, and the glass of the mirror inserted therein.v
A fillet, necessarily lightl in structure, has been used to hold the glass in place, which fillet ,has la tendency to separate from the adjacentmargin of the backing, thereby not only loosening the hold on the glass, but also presenting an unsightly appearance.
This invention has for its main objects to provide an article for toilet use, such as a hand glass 'or brush, thlat is strong and l durablein construction, adapted to be made at a minimum of cost, relative to its structure and advantages, ofthe desired weight and thickness, and attractive in appearance.,
With the foregoing',` and yotler objects in view, hereinafter stated, the invention consists of 'the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more Ispecifically stated, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown a device embodying the structure of the inven- ZEEILLI, a citirior ir itsA preferred form, bur-a is to be understood that changes, fvariations and ere'nce is hadto the accompanying drawings,
lwhich 'forma `part of this specification, .and whereinlike characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several u views, and wherein:
In articles of the character hereinafter stated,- Weight is one of the important fea- Fig. 1 is afplan view, partlyA broken away, of a hand mirror embodyin the invention..

Fig. 2 isa vertical section taken on the line of Fig. 1.l
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a brushembodying the invention, and
Fig.` 4r is a verticalpsection taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3. As illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the' hand mirror is provided with aback plate having a body portion 1, Iand a handle portion 2. The back plate may be made of any suitable material, preferably Celluloid, and of uniform thickness throughout. A front plate is provided with a handle portion' 3, and an open body portion 4, overlapping at its inner edge a mirror 5.-
The handle and body portions are preferably of uniform thickness throughout and the outer margins thereof correspond with theouter margin of the/"body and handle portions of the back plate, and are preferably in substantially vertical alignment therewith. An intermediate openmarginal frame 6 is arranged between the body'por-` tion and handle of the front and back plates and bears against thevouter margin of the body and handle portions of said plates.
:The intermediate lopen frame 6 is narrow in width, and preferably of -approximately the same thickness as,w1dth,.so as to space the bodyy and handle of the frontl and back plates at the desired distance from each other.
Filling material, such as cardboard 7, ina single layer, or a plurality of layers is placed within said intermediate open frame and against the back of the mirror, and a filler of lead'orcardboard corresponding in thickness and in line therewith is inserted within the open intermediate frame between the handle portion 3 of the framesection and the lead filling 7.
lead or cardboard,y and the front plate Weight is addedlto the article by means of one or more layers of sheet. lead 8, placed .within saidopen intermediate frame against the cardboard and preferably between. the cardboard' and back of the mirror.
In assembling the'parts the open inter-- mediate frame 6 is placed upon the kbody and handle of the back plate, and the layers of cardboard and lead placed within said frame. The mirror-is then placed-upon the termediateframe, andthe front plate is cemented to the front of said open frame and the inner margin of the opening of the front plate is cemented to the outer margin of the mirror. e
By means of such construction landarrangement a hand mirror is provided that is strong and simple in construction, pleasing in appearance, `and of any desired Weight and thickness. f
None of the parts require embossing to give the/desired hold oncthe mirror, or any filler to hold the mirror in place.
The materialforming the front and back plates are notv subjected to` any injurious heat imsecuring the parts together, and the parts are not liable to become separated when/in use. 4 l
Figs. 3 and 4 shots1` the invention applied to a hand brush.`
In such construction a back plate9, and ,an intermediate open frame 10 are provided similar in general' construction to the back plate andy intermediate open frame shown in Figures 1 and 2. Cardboard 11 and one or morey sheets of lead 12 may be inserted Within the open intermediate. rafme 10.
l The back of block 13 'of a brush having bristles 14 inserted thereinis placed Within the `open frame 10 and is held in position by means of the `marginaledge 15 /of the opening of the front plate loverlapping the 1 outer margin of the brush block.
A filling 16 o f lead or cardboard'correspending in thickness with the brush back may be inserted Within the handle portion A ofthe intermediate frameJlO and the parts cemented to ther vgin the same manner as jin thel case o the hand mirror.
'-What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,"is: -1. A- toilet article having a back plate formed ywith'a body Section and a handle section, a 'front plate having an open body sectionand a handle section, an intermediate ythat of said back plate, a toilet accessory Within said open intermediate frame with its outer margin beneath the inner margin of the opening Yof said front plate and a lsheet of filling materia-l within the handle ortion of said open intermediate 1frame in ine with said tollet accessory and. of substantially equal thickness therewith.
- 2.r A- toilet article having -a back plate formed with a. body section anda handle section, a front plate having an open body section and a handle section, an intermediate around and between open frameeextending d b k 1t d sai ae p a e an the outer margins o .front plate, sheet filling material Withinthe body and handle portions of the intermediate frame of-smaller area than that of said vback plate, a toilet accessory Within said open intermediate frame with its outer margin beneath the 'inner margin of the -opening of said frontplate and sheet filling material Within the handle portion ofvsaid open intermediate, frame" in line with said `substantially equal toilet accessory and lof thickness therewith.`
l3. A toilet article having a back plate ormedvwith a body section and a handle section, a front plate having an open body `section and a handle section, an interme? diate open 4frame extending around and between the o uter margins 0f said back plate and front plate,'a .toiletv ,accessory within said open intermediate frame with its outer margin beneath the inner margin of the y opening of said front plate, and filling material, withink said open intermediate frame between said back plate and toilet accesso-ry, and between the handle sections of said back plate and, front plate. 1
In testimony whereof I have aililredmy signature.
