7'0 all w/Lomt may cancer/m:
citizen of the United o States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of 'Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvenents in Switch Stands, of which the followingl is a specification.
My invention relates to means for throwing the switch points into open or closed position.
rl`he object ofmy invention is to provide simple, convenient, el'ficient, economica-l and easily operated means for operating the switch stand in a confined space to' throw the switch points into either open or closed position. V
My invention consists in providing a base having the switch throwing lever pivotally mounted thereon to be inoved parallel with the track and also having a bell crank pivotally nounted on said base with one arm suitably connected to the switch throwing lever near the pivoted end thereof and having the other arm of said bell crank pivotally connected to a connecting rod suitably attached to the switch points.
My invention also consists in the constructionl combination and arrangement of parts as herein set forth and claimed.
In the drawings: i
Fig. 1 is a plan view of my invention;
Fin. 2 is a perspective view of the switch stand and solid connecting rod;
Fin: 3 is a side elevation of Fig. 1;
Fi. 4 is a perspective view of the switch stand showing a modified form of connecting rod to permit the switch to be run through in one direction and automatically return the switch points to closed position.
In the embodiment of iny invention as illustrated and which shows a preferred construction, provide an ofl'set base 1 having end 2 thereof parallel with end 3. Each end is provided with suitableyspike openings 11 by which the base maybe securely fastened to the cross ties. End 2 is provided with a transverse bearing 5 on the upper side thereof and has journal 6 of switch throwing lever 7 pivotally mounted therein and held in place by a. Spring cotter 8. End 3 of said base is provided with a bearingV boss 9'having a: cylindrical stud 10 extending upwardly there-from on which a 'bell crank 11 is mounted.
A pitman 12 is pivotally connected at plc, easy and efiicient.
v one end to arm 13 ofl saidbell cra'nk and le it known that'I, GEORGE ASHTON, a
is'pivotally connected at its other endto said; switch throwing level-at a point nearv` its pivotal. connection. Connectin rod 14 is connected at oneyend to the switch points and at the other end to arin 15 of said bell Crank. In Fig. 4 I have shown a modified Construction of connecting rod 14 which is adapted to permit a train-to run through the switch in one direction and to auto- Inatically return saidA switch points into closed position. against the main rail.
The operation of the switch is very sini- To close the switch nerely throw the lever 7 from the position illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 until it assuineszthe position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. This movement of the switch .throwing lever will operate the connecting rod through the bell cra-nk and pitman to move the switch points.
It will be seen that this Construction and arrangement may be inounted in a Vvery narrow space upon the cross ties at one side of the track and permit the switch throwing lever to be thrown parallel with the track instead of transversely thereof, thus permitting the operation of the switch stand in a very contracted or narrow space such as in a tunnel.
lVhile I have shown and described a particular Construction and arrangement of parts, it will be understood that various modifications thereof may be made without departinglfroin the scopeV or spirit of the invention as defined in the claims.
VVhat I c-laim as new and desire to secure -by Letters Patent is:
1. A switch stand comprisng a base having a horizontal bearing at one end and a vertical stud at the other end thereof, a switch throwing lever mounted in said horizontal hearing,- and having a weight thereon, adapted when in downwardly closed position to be entirely removed vertically from said base7 a bell crank mounted on said stud and above said base and having the outer end of one arm entirely removed vertically from said base and having its other arm extendingin parallel relation and above said base, a pitman having one end pivotallyg connected to said switch throwing lever adjacent said horizontal bearing and having,` its other end pivotally connected to one arm of said bell crank, and
a switch throwing oonnecting rod pivota-lly one end and a. vertical stud at the other-end thereof, a switch throvvng lever monnted in said horizontal bearing and having a Weight thereon adapted When in downward position kto be entirely removed from said base, a bell crank nounted" on said .stnd and having one arn entirely removed vertially connected to said switch throwing lever adjacent said horizontal bearing and having its other end pivotally connected to one arn of said bell Crank, a switch throwinr 'connectingrod pivotally connected to the other arm of said bell Crank, and a yeldable means connected to said connecting rod adjacent said switch stand.
