To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, RINsAI Manna, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as'wi ll enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in tobacco pipes and more particularly to appliances for use in the bowl portions of said pipes, whereby the lower draft tube will be kept free from clogging and waste and the inside of the bowl kept clean.

An object of the invention is to provide a tobacco pipe with an adjustable appliance which will be readily removable therefrom and which will prevent the ashes and waste matter from entering the draft tube of the pipe and clogging the same. V

Another object of the invention is to provide a suitable tobacco pipe with an attachment which will be removably positioned within the bowl of the pipe and whereby not only will the draft tube of "the pipe be kept free from clogging but the bowl of the pipe will be kept clean.

A further object of the invention is to provide an attachment or appliance to the tobacco pipe bowl which will act as a grate adapted to be positioned adjacent the lower portion of the interior of said pipe bowl with spaced upwardly extending arms or straps which are adapted to engage the side walls of the bowl of said pipe whereby the same may be cleaned by rotating the said arms or straps. Other objects will ap pear as the description proceeds.

In the accompanying drawings which form a part of my application- Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of the tobacco pipe with my appliance in position within the bowl of the pipe;

Fig. 3 is a side elevation partly in section of the appliance.

Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accompanying drawing to designate corresponding parts.

A pipe of the usual construction 1s provided with a bowl 1 and a'stem-Q in which 4 of the bowl 1.

The preferred form of my invention consists in a substantially round plate or. grate 5, which is provided about its outer edges with pronged extensions 6 and adjacent its center portion with a vent or draft openruns 7. An arm or strap 8 is pivoted at its center portion to the center portion of the plate or grate 5 by means of a rivet 9. The plate or grate portion 5 of the attachment is forced down into the bowl 1 of the pipe until it is slightly spaced from the bottom of the said bowl. It will be noticed that since the plate or grate 5 is of greater diameter than the diameter of the interior of the pipe bowl that the said plate or grate will flex downwardly to form a concave'support for the charge of tobacco, with its pronged extensions 6 impinging the wall of the pipe bowl, thereby holding the attachment inposition within the bowl.

The arms or straps 8 will conform to" the upper face of grate 5 and to the contour of the inner wall of the pipe bowl and will tend upwardly to the top of the same and laterally as at 10 across the upper wall of the same to furnish an additional support for the attachment and finger grasps for rotating the straps.

The mode of operation of my attachment is as follows:

The. plate or grate portion is forced down into the bowl of the pipe to within a. short distance of the bottom of the said bowl and the upwardly and outwardly extending arms or straps lie in contact with the'upper face of the grate and the wall of the i is formed a smoke passage 3 which connects I at its inner end with the interior portlon said bowl and serve the double function of supporting the grate in operative position and also, upon rotation, of cleaning the walls of the pipe bowl and the grate.

It will be apparent that with my attach-- ment in position within the pipe bowl that there will be no chance of the smoke passage or draft tube becoming clogged. Furtherfrom the spirit of the invention as is claimed. a v

Havmg thus described my 1nvent10n, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Stat-es is An attachment for tobacco pipes comprising a disk radially indented to constitute prongs and a strap centrally pivoted to-zand at the center of the disk, said disk, prongs andstrap'ibeing constructed of flexible ma of thepipe to constitute a dished grate with the prongs extending upwardly and said strap 'will befflexed to closely engage said 'flexed disk and prongs and the bowl of the pipe above the same.
