IMPROVE'ME NT IN APPARATUS FOR DRENCHING STOCK 0N RAILWAY-CARS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,986, dated August 11, 1874; application filed July 3,1874. I

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HIRAM SMITH, of Norwalk, in the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Drenching Stock on Railway-Oars and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference markedthereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention consists in providing a standpipe or hydrant with spouts, which are connected thereto by flexible joints, and in connecting with said spouts certain levers or handles arranged to be operated from a suitable platform, so thatthe mouths of the spouts may be adjusted for throwing water upon the decks of cars of different heights. In the transportation of stock-such as hogs, cattle, &c.by rail, in summer, it is advantageous to drench or sprinkle the stock and the decks of the cars at intervals along railroads, and my invention is intended for the rapid and convenient drenching or sprinkling of the decks, and stock thereon, of trains of cars of various heights. In the drawing, Figure l is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view.

A is astand-pipe, havingany suitable source of supply. B B are spouts or tubular arms, connected to opposite sides of the stand-pipe by flexible joints, at b b. The mouths of these pipes are formed so that they will throw wide thin streams. G O are levers pivoted to opposite sides of the stand-pipe, each connected to one of the spouts B B by rods 0 c. The ends or handles of the levers extend over the platform D, upon which stands the attendant whose business it is to operate the apparatus. Pivoted to the back of the spout is another lever, E, which also extends over the platform, and is connected with the cut-off by rod 6. I

When a train loaded with stock on doubledeck cars is about to pass the apparatus, the attendant takes his place upon the platform D, turns on the water by the lever E, and, seizing the levers O 0, one with each hand, adjusts the spouts so that the water will be thrown as desired.

Having now fully described the construction and operation of my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of stand-pipe A and spouts B B, connected thereto by flexible water-joints, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination of vibratingspoutsB B, levers O G,.and rods 0 c, substantially as described.

3. The apparatus, substantially as described, for drenching stock and decks of cars, consistin g of stand-pipe A and wide-mouthed vibrating spouts B B, operated by levers O G.
