IMPROVEMENT IN RAILWAY-LAMP SCREENS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,915, dated August 11, 1874; application filed December 2, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES SPENCER, of the village of Welland, county of Welland, Province of Ontario, Canada, have in vented a Bailway-Lamp Screen, of which the following is a specification: v

The object of my invention is to protect rail- Way-switch and semaphore lamps from wind during the process of lighting and arranging the same.

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this. specification, Figure 1 represents a front view of my invention, a part thereof, particularly shown in Fig. 2, being, however, re-

moved. Fig. 2 illustrates a detached portion of the invention, and which is hereinafter described.

In both views similar letters of reference indicate similar parts of the invention.

B is a covered frame sufficiently large to cover the orifice produced by opening the door of the lampcase. K is an aperture in frame B, to the edges of which is attached the sleeve I, Fig. 2, through which the operator passes his hand when lighting and arranging the lamp. The lower end E of the sleeve I is contracted by an elastic cord, which closes it securely about the Wrist of the operator, thus preventing the action of wind from interfering with the flame. H is a glass above the aperture K, through which the operator may see to perform his duties. A is a sanded paper or other rough surface attached to the inside of frame B, upon which matches may be lighted. B is a handle, by means of which the operator may conveniently control the apparatus. S is a catch-dog, 'used in adjusting the frame to the lamp-case.

When the door of "the lamp-case is thrown open, the frame B is placed over the orifice, and the catch-dog S,beinghook-shaped, catches on the frame of the lamp-case, preventing the frame B from passing beyond the orifice. The operator,- retaining the handle B in one hand, presses the frame B firmly against the lampcase, while he passes his other hand through the aperture K and sleeve I, and lights and arranges the lamp. He then closes the door against the frame B, gradually withdrawing the said frame B by means of the handle B, the door being kept pushed against the frame B until it is withdrawn past the orifice, when the door returns to its proper place and fastenings without the usual admission of wind.

I disclaim the invention of an elastic or yielding diaphragm or covering for filling the space between the arm and the boundary of the hand-hole in a head-light, my invention having a loose sleeve in a screen for the lampcase; but

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

l. The lamp-screen, consisting of the frame B, having the aperture K partially closed by a loose sleeve, I, provided with a contracted and elastic entrance and window, H, the whole constituting a cover attachable to, and detachable from, a lamp-case, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. In combination with the frame B, having the elements H, K, and I, the handle R and catch S, as and for the purposes set forth.

3. In combination with the attachable and detachable frame B of the screen of a lampcase adapted to the purpose specified, the roughened igniting surface A, as set forth.
