F. S. HUNT DUSTLESS BRUSH Filed Sept. l0, 1923 INVEN TOR.

Unirse stares essaim rarenioifiice FREDERICK s. i-iiiirr, or MILWAUKEE, wisconsin, assisteert 1To MILWAUKEE nUsT- LESS BRUSH COMPANY, QF MKLNAUKEE, WISCCll\lSl'.lN',Y A. CORPORATION OF WIS- CONSIN.
nusrrnnss BRUSH.
Application filed September 1Q, 19232 Serial No. GELB/18.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Beit known that l, Fiinmnuon S. HUNT,
a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee. inthe county of Milwaukee and State of lisconsinfhave invented new and useful Improvements in Dustless Brushes, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanyf ing surrounded by the former and connected to the reservoir to supply minute quantities of volat-ile oil to the surfacey being cleaned. As thus usually constructed, the absorbent tufts, which extend through openings in the wooden brush back, tend to swell and stop the desired flow of oil and if less tuft strands are placed in the openings or the openings enlarged, the flow'of oil' will be too great.
It is one'of the objects of the `present invention. to overcome the before mentioned objectionable features and provide a dustless brush in which the absorbent tufts are mounted in a manner to pi'ovide a predetermined 'flow of oil without liability of the flow being retarded. f
A further object of the invention is to provide a dust-less brush in which the absorbent tufts are mounted in metal tubes and are reinforced by non-absorbent tuft strands arranged in a manner to permit the feed of oil to the surface being cleaned` A further object of the invention is to provide a dustless brush which is of simple construction, is strong and durable", and is well adapted for the purpose described.
`With the above and other objects iii View, the invention consists of the improved dust# less brush and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawing, in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views:
Fig. l is a front view of the improved dustless brush, a part being shown in section to show interior construction;
Fig. 2 isa transverse sectional view thereof on a larger scale;` x
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail v'iewof one of y the absorbent tufts and a. portion of the'` brush'back taken on a still larger scale; and Fig. l is a sectional detail view `ofone of the absorbent tufts.
Referring to thev drawing, the numeral 5 indicates the brush back provided with a seriesof outer perforations for receiving non-absorbent tufts or bristles 6 which may{ be fastened to the back in `any "manner de-'- sired. A metal plate7 extends over the upper surface of the back 5 and in connection y with the cover 8 spaced therefrom, forms a reservoir 9 for holdingkerosene or other volatile oil adaptedto be used `in sweeping.
The cover `Sis formed with a continuous groove l0 to engage Athe edge portions of as shown in Fig. 2; To seal the joint between theplate edges and the grooved porvthe back 5 to form a tight closure therewith and with the, edge portions of the platek 7 F tion l0,\ceinent ll is interposed "therebey tween. `The said back 5 is formed with a medial longitudinal. line of perforations l2 for receiving tubular metal members or ferthe numeral l5 to form an oil tight joint.
Absorbent tuft strands or bristles like palma fiber 15 are mixed with non-absorbent bristles like liorsehair 16 and the combined strands are inserted into the tubular members lf3 and are held in positionbywires 17.
It has been found in practice thatin usn ing theabsorbent strands alone, when saturated with oil, they swell and fill up all of the interstices vbetween the strands and v i retard or stop the feed of oil, whereas by mixing non-absorbent strands or bristles like horse hair, the interstices between the bristles remain open y'and the absorbent bristles are not `compressed to an extent to stop the flow of oilftherethrough, with the 'p i i result that a constant feed of oil is maintained. The oil so fed lwill flow downwardly p m5 to the lower ends of the bristles and contact with the dust on the surface being cleaned and will preventl the rising of said dust.
The use of horse hair or other like bristles or tutt strands also serves to reinforce the absorbent strands and maintain them in position.
An opening covered With a cap 17 is provided'for filling the reservoir 9 with oil,` handle 18 adjustablv Connected to the back 5 is also provided for using the brush.
From the foregoing description it Will be seen that the dustless brush provides an all metal reservoir for holding and feeding the oil to the oil tufts and that the said tufts assure eens-tant feed of oil to the tufts When the brush is in sweeping position;
that ll claim as my invention is:
l. A dustless brush, comprising a brush back having an oil reservoir provided with a pluralitvoii tu''tiopenings, and a tutt oomposed 'of absorbent and nonnabsorbent strands entendingz` into each or" said openings to control the flow of oil therethrough.
2. A dustless brush, comprisinga brush baol having a pluralit)7 of tutt openings, an
oil reservoir forming part oig sai'dbrush back and having a plurality' oi' tubular portions Whieh extend through some et `the brush back openings? a tutt eonxposed oi' mixed absorbent Aand non-absorbent strands extending` into the tubular portions, and non-absorbent tufts extending into the other openings of the brush bach. J l
3. A dustless brush, comprising a brush backy having a plurality ol' tuft openings, a metal plateV extending over the upper surface of the back and having openings in register with some of the back openings,
tubular members extending through the register'ing openings and having means for oonneetion with the metal plate, a Cover having a grooved portion which extends around and overlaps the edge portions of the brush back and the metal plate to form a reservoir in connection With said plate, absorbent tnitv sti-'ands extending into the tubular members, and non-absorbent tufts extending into the ybrush back openings.
el. A dustless brush, comprising a brush baek having` a pluralitv oi' tutt open-ings, a
metal plate extending over the upper surface of the back and having openings 1n register with some of the back openings, tubular `strands extending intoY the tubular members, and non-absorbent tufts extending into the brush back openings. A
5. A rtu'ft for a dustless brush, comprising a tubular member,l and absorbent and nonabsorbent tutt strands extending into said tubular member to control the ow of oil therethrough. f
In testimony'whereoi, I affix my signature.
