Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
BENJAMIN F. REINMUND, OF LANCASTER, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SE AL|NG DIP-PIPES OF GAS-MAINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,845, dated August 4, 1874 application filed January 5, 1874.
To all uhom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I,l BENJAMIN F. BEIN- MUND, of Lancaster, in the county of Faireld and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Seal-Dip; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in whichn Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a cross-section in line x x of Fig. l.
The invention relates to means by which gas may be transferred from the retorts to the condenser or gas-main, as hereinafter fully described and subsequently claimed.
A represents the stand-pipe which leads from retort, and .E the gas-main, the two being connected by intermediate pipes B B, which meet in a chamber, O, having division J, and open at the lower end. D is a liquidvessel, openat the top, encircling the chamber O, and pendent, by arms and lugs d d', from a lever, G. By operating this lever G the vessel D may be raised so as to bring the lower end of chamber O into the fluid in the former, and thus prevent back pressure from the gas-main while the retort is bei-n g charged. Near the upper end and on each side of the vessel D are attached two pipes, H H, that receive the surplus liquid from said vessel and discharge it into a subjacent receptacle, F, these pipes being arranged loosely in the short open pipes f f so as to play up and down therein as the vessel D moves, to seal or unseal the pipes B.
I am aware that liquid-seals, inl connection with gas-generators and gas-mains, are old, but none that are known are, in my judgment, so simple, cheap, and withal so eicient as mine.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. Thetwo pipesB B, one connected with the retort, the other with the main, and both terminating in the same enlargement O, having the division J, in combination with. a subjacent suspended and movable vessel, D, as and for the purpose described.
2. The liquid-vessel D, provided with pipes H H and the receptacle F, having short pipes f f, combined in the manner and for the purpose specified.
BENJAMIN F. BEINMUND.
