To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER ERICKSON, citizen of the United States, residing at 862 North Wells Street, Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lifting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lifting devices especially adapted for use in pulling stumps, although not necessarily restricted to such use. e
' An important object of this invention is to provide a lifting apparatus having means whereby the leverage is compounded so that a powerful pull or lifting force may be eX- erted by a single operator.
A further object is to provide a lifting Y apparatus having simple means whereby the parts are held in position between each lifting stroke so that the stump or the like cannot return all or part of the way to its original position.
A further object is to provide a lifting apparatus of the character specified which is of highly simplified construction, durable in use and comparatively cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same.

In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 designates a base constructed of suitable material and provided at its forward end with standards 6 to which a pair of similarly constructed beams 7 are connected. beams 7 are extended beyond the standards 6 and support a pulley 8 over which a lift ing cable 9 is trained. One terminal portion of the lifting cable 9 is provided with a hook l0 adapted to be engaged with the chains wrapped about a stump. It is understood, of course, that the hook 10 may be engaged with any article or weight it is desired to lift or free.
Figures l and 2 also plainly illustrate that the beams 7 extend a substantial distance rearwardly of the standard 6 and diverge so that their rear terminal portions may be rigidly connected to the upper portions of a pair of spaced supports l2. A second guide pulley lll is connected to the beams 7 and serves to guide the lifting cable 9 onto a drum 16. It will be seen with reference to Figure 2 that the pulley 14 is capable of lateral sliding movement to permit of the limited transverse movement of the cable 9 as it is wound onto or is unwound from the drum 16.
The drum 16 is mounted on a shaft or aXle 18 rotatably carried by bearings on the upper portions of the Isupports 12 and a ratchet wheel 2O is rigidly secured to the drum at one end of the same and is operated in a vstep by step manner to bring about the winding of the drum onto the cable so that the object connected to the hook 10 will be lifted.
Figures land 3 illustrate that ratchet opera-tinglinks 22 are arranged at opposite sides of the ratchet wheel and are provided with a transverse pin 23 adapted to be engaged with the teeth of the ratchet wheel so that when the links are drawn upwardly the ratchet wheel will be turned in a counterclockwise direction. The upper portions of the links 22 are connected to the forward portion of a lever 25 and it will be seen thatfwhen the rear portion of the lever 25 is drawn downwardly the links 22 will be drawn upwardly. A toggle link 26 is connected to the forward portion of the lever 25 and is connected to a second toggle link 27 through the medium of a knuckle joint 28. In carrying out the invention the toggle link 26 is extended at right angles to the lever 25 and has its upper portion provided with a roller 30 slidable in the oppositely arranged channels 31 of a guide 32. The guide 32 which is vertically arranged not only serves as a means for guiding the roller 30 but also as a means for preventing excessive lateral movement of the link 26 and the lever 25 associated therewith.
A second lever 34; is connected to the lower toggle lever 27 and has its rear terminal portion connected to an actuating' cable 36 as indicated at 37. In this case the actuating cable 36 is endless and is trained about pulleys 39 on the rear portion of the lever 25. The cable 36 is operated by an actuating lever 40 as the actuating lever is securely connected to the cable as indicated at 41. H
When the rear terminal portion of the actuating lever 40 is forced downwardly by the operator the levers 25 and 34 are drawn in the direction of each other so that the levers assume the position illustrated in `Figure 3. As the levers are drawn toward each other the knuckle joint 28 is moved forwardly and the rollers 3() move upwardly in the channels 3l so that the upward movement of the links 22 is brought about. As rpreviously stated when the links 22 are moved upwardly the ratchet wheel is turned in a counterclockwise direction whereby the lifting cable 9 is wound upon the drum. Ofcourse the continued rocking of the lever 40 by the operator results in the rocking of the levers 25 and 34 so that the object to ybe lifted may be raised the desired extent.
The lower portion of the toggle link 27 in provided with a pair of apertured ears for the reception of the end portions of a pin 5l and the pin rests ina groove 52 in the upper side of a block 53. This rocking connection between the toggle link 27 and the block 53 provides a wide bearing surfaceso that the strain is well distributed. and so that the possibility of breakage is reduced to a minimum.
The roller 23 is urged into engagement with the adjacent tooth of the ratchet wheel by means of a spring 60 connected to one of the links 22 and to a fixed portion of the apparatus such as one of the supports l2. When theV links 22 are moved upwardly the adjacent end of the spring 60 may also i partake of a limited upward movement and will hold the roller or connecting pin 23 in engagement with the ratchet wheel. On the return or downward movement of the links 22 the sprinof 60 permits the roller 23 to move outwardly and ride over the ratchet teeth.
During the return stroke of the links 22 the ratchet wheel is held against turning by a'lockmg pin 65 on the upper end of a pivoted arm 66. The arm 66 has connection with a spring 68 by means of whichthe pin 1s urged into engagement with the teeth on `the periphery of the ratchet wheel.
.With reference to the foregoing descrip` tion taken in connectionA with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that the operator may rock the lever 10 manually or otherwise so as to bring about the rocking of the levers 25 and 34 whereupon the toggle links 2G and 27 are moved inwardly into alinement with each other and possibly beyond center so as to turn the ratchet wheel in a counterclockwise direction.
By the arrangement of toggle links and levers illustrated the leverage is compounded so that a powerful lifting force is exerted by the apparatus with but a comparatively small force applied to the actuating lever 40.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
l. A lifting apparatus comprising a base, a pair of levers having toggle links connected at their adjacent ends, an operating member connected to the forwardportion vof one of the levers, and a cable connected to both of said levers for rocking the same in opposite directions.
2. lifting apparatus comprising a base, a pair| of levers having connected toggle links, an operating member connected to the forward portion of one of the levers, and a guide having channels at opposite sides of one of said toggle links, one of said links being provided with rollers received in said channels whereby the vertical movement of the links is guided and whereby the lateral movement of the links is limited.
3. A lifting apparatus comprising a base, a pair of levers having connected toggle links, an operating member connected to the forward portion of one of the levers, a guide having channels at opposite sides of one of saidtoggle links, one of said links being'provided with rollers received in said channels whereby the verticalmovement of the links is guided and whereby the lateral movement of the links is limited, and a ratchet wheel engaged by said operating member.
4. A lifting ,apparatus comprising a base, a pairy of levers having connected toggle links, an operating member connected to the forward portion of one of the levers, a guide having channels at opposite sides of one o f said tbggle links, one of said links being provided withrollers received in said channels whereby the vertical movement of the links is guided and whereby the lateral movement of the links is limited, a ratchet wheel engaged by said operating member, and means to hold the ratchet wheel in a set position.
5. A lifting apparatus comprising a base, apair of levers having toggle links connected at their adjacent ends, an operating member connected to the forward portion of one of the levers, a guide having channels at opposite sides of one of said toggle links, one of said links being` provided with rollers received in said channels whereby the vertical movement of the links is guided andi whereby the lateral movement of the links is limited, a ratchet wheel engaged by said operating member, means to hold the ratchet wheel in a set position, a drum having connection with said ratchet wheel, and a lifting cable trained about said drum.
6. A lifting apparatus comprising a base, a pair of levers having toggle links connected at their adjacent ends, an operating member connected to the forward portion of one of the levers, a guide having channels at opposite sides of one of said toggle links, one
of said links being provided with rollers re' ceived in said channels whereby the movement of the links is guided, a ratchet wheel engaged by said operating member, means to hold the ratchet wheel in a set position, a drum having connection with said ratchet wheel, a lifting cable trained about said drum, a standard arranged adjacent said ratchet wheel, and a beam supported by said standard and having guide pulleys for said liftinocable.
7. lifting apparatus comprising a base, a vertically arranged guide mounted on said base and having oppositely arranged channels, a pair of toggle links connected at their adjacent ends, one of said toggle links being provided with rollers received in said channels whereby the movement of the links is guided, means to support one of the toggle links for rocking movement, levers connected to said toggle links, and an endless cable connected to said levers for rocking the same.

A lifting apparatus comprising a base, a vertically arranged guide mounted on said base and having oppositely arranged channels, a pair of toggle links connected at their adjacent ends, one of said toggle links being provided with rollers received in said channels whereby the movement of the links is guided, means to support one of the toggle links for rocking movement, levers connected to said toggle links, and an endless cable connected t0 said levers for rocking the same, said cable being securely connected to one of said levers and being slidably connected to the other lever.
9. A lifting apparatus comprising a base, a guide mounted on said base and having oppositely arranged channels, a pair of toggle links connected at their adjacent ends, one of said toggle links being provided with rollers received in said channels whereby the movement of the links is guided, means to support one of the toggle links for rocking movement, levers connected to said toggle links, an endless cable connected to said levers for rocking the same, said cable being securely connected to one of said levers and being slidably connected to the other lever, and an actuating lever connected to said cable.

A lifting apparatus comprising a base, a vertically arranged guide mounted on said base and having oppositely arranged channels, a pair of toggle links connected at their adjacent ends, one of said toggle links being provided with rollers received in said channels whereby the movement of the links is guided, means to support one of the toggle ylinks for rocking movement, levers connected to said toggle links, an endless cable connected to said levers for rocking the same, said cable being securely connected to one of said levers and being slidably connected to the other lever, an actuating lever connected to said cable, lifting links connected to one of said first named levers in advance of said toggle links, a ratchet wheel operated by said lifting link, means to hold said ratchet wheel in an adjusted position, a drum having connection with said ratchet wheel, and a lifting cable having connection With said drum.
